Michel Thomas Advanced Spanish: Bk. 1 Review

Michel Thomas Advanced Spanish: Bk. 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am only half way through this, but I can tell that this is another masterpiece by Michel Thomas (may he rest in peace).
With his warm, rich and rasping voice, it's like you are a child again, listening to your grandfather regaling you with stories from long ago. A joy to listen to! As Michel Thomas says himself at the beginning of the recording, "I'm happy to be here, I'm happy to be back with you" - yes, we are happy to be back too!
The pace of this 4 CD pack is much faster than the original 8 CD set, but this is to be expected as the listener is at a more advanced stage. One feature that improves on the first set is that the structure of the lessons are listed for each track on each CD.
Here's an overview of the lessons:
CD 1: overview of present, subjunctive, imperative
CD 2: future, conditional, simple past, "The diving past" - (I have spoken)
CD 3: "would haves", more simple past, "was-ings" - (I was going)
CD 4: past subjunctive, "would haves"
The reason why I don't use all the right gramatical names is that that's not the way MT works. He tells you how to say the things with his own unique style.
Remember to "change tracks" and that the "go-gos" become "ga-gas" in the imperative!
Just as awesome as the 8 CD set for MT fans who want to go (a good few steps) further. 5 stars.

"This recording follows on from the first 8-hour, all-audio course which has taken the language-learning world by storm. With no books, no memorising and no homework, Michel Thomas teaches the basic grammar of the language painlessly. Using the method he has perfected over the last 50 years, he now shares his secret with the world - and 'makes it simple." - "Sunday Times". "In only a matter of hours, he teaches what it takes years to cover by conventional methods, giving his students a comprehensive working knowledge of the language - all the tenses and all three moods are taught and practised; the position of pronouns is made easy, and Michel spends some time on the problems of translation, instilling in the students 'an enhanced awareness of their own language'. And he does all this effortlessly, 'effectively and easily'." - "Daily Star". By the end of the Advanced course Michel has covered all the structures and tenses of 'A' level and beyond. Grammar points and tenses only touched upon in the first 8-hour course are expanded to give the student a complete knowledge of the structure of the entire language. He points out the similarities of the vocabulary in English and Spanish and gives his students the tools to guess the words they do not know, or think they do not know. Join two students as they learn in real time. Become the third member of the class and experience the excitement of learning a language as if by magic!

Where Is the Green Sheep? (Horn Book Fanfare List (Awards)) Review

Where Is the Green Sheep (Horn Book Fanfare List (Awards))
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have you ever noticed that many of the best picture books for children aged zero to five tend to involve sheep? Why is this? What is it about sheep that make them ideal receptacles of authorial wit and wisdom? Is it their woolly coats? Their sly sweet faces? Their remarkably loud baas? Whatever the case, I've had the pleasure of reading smartly written sheep books that vary from "Sheep In a Jeep" by Nancy Shaw to this more recent Mem Fox creation, "Where is the Green Sheep". Helped in no small part by newcomer Judy Horacek, the book is a deft examination of various sheeplike and unsheeplike activities. It's a surprisingly charming and winning little book that's certain to earn the undivided love and attention of ankle biters worldwide.
Using remarkably simple words, the book follows various sheep through their day. We see sheep of many colors and sheep taking baths. We have sheep up and we have sheep down. There are band sheep, wind sheep, near and far sheep. Just about any kind of sheep you can think of, this book's got `em. Still, one question keeps popping up throughout the pages. Where is the green sheep? By the end, we discover the mysterious green sheep's location and exactly what it is doing. It's an oddly satisfying way to end the tale and so we do.
Mem Fox incites an odd following of rabid pro-Fox fans everywhere. People cannot get enough of this woman. I've never completely fallen under the Fox spell myself, but with this book I'm beginning to see her charms. Though the story would be far less interesting if it was not accompanied by Judy Horacek's illustrations (more on that later), it's still a bouncy flouncy flurry of fun. In fact after all the crazy sheep antics there are two blank pages containing these words at the story's close. "What IS that green sheep? Turn the page quietly - let's take a peep...". And then you see the book's namesake, "fast asleep" under a lovely green bush. The whole book rhymes beautifully, scanning perfectly on every page. So to finish with this sweet quiet ending... well it does the heart good.
But the real star of this show is Judy Horacek. An Australian who's bookflap merely refers to her credits as having, "written and illustrate(d) books of her own", she has burst onto the children's publishing scene with a whiz and a bang. Her style is best summarized as deceptively simple. In truth, it mostly consists of sheep, scenes, and actions drawn with a black Rotring Isograph pen and colored in with various shaded and colorful watercolors. This sounds dull. It is not. Horacek's sheep have somehow been imbued with remarkable jolts of personality and joy. Whether you're watching the antics of the rain sheep dancing about a lamppost or the car sheep fixing its engine, something about these animals is bloody fascinating. But the moment in the book where these wooly stars really got me was the section that discusses near and far. You turn the page and find yourself nose to furry nose with a sheep viewing you intently. The two little black spots that make up its eyes bore into yours. And on the next page is a far sheep. Possibly as small as Horacek's thick tipped pen could draw. It doesn't matter what these lollygagging lambs are doing. Every step they take is spellbinding.
So there you have it. A great book for children that are just beginning to read. And trust me, a predilection towards sheep is not required to enjoy this book. It's just one of those rare tales that adults will enjoy reading over and over and over and that kids will find equally enjoyable that many times. It's not one of those grand works of preschool literature, but it's a great book. Just give it a glance. As sheep books go, it's a keeper indeed.

Biblical Words and Their Meaning Review

Biblical Words and Their Meaning
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Word studies are some of the most abused pursuits in biblical hermeneutics. When we enter the realm of ancient tongues, too often we forget common sense. We create rules of language that we ourselves never follow in our own day-to-day speech. We overload words with deep meanings, whether or not the author intended it. We analyze the life out of scripture, obscuring the text itself.
Partially, this tendency is enabled by the rich arsenal of word-study tools at our disposal. Lexicons and concordances make it easy to look up every definition and instance of any word and its cognates. Computerized tools make this process painless even for the amateur scholar.
But this arsenal is full of double-edged swords. In this compact introduction to lexical semantics, Moises Silva presents to the exegete the knowledge to make use of these tools without drawing questionable conclusions. In particular, he highlights five common pitfalls:
1. reading into a word inapplicable meanings from related words (abuse of etymology)
2. reading into a word more than the word actually says (illegitimate totality transfer)
3. misunderstanding the role of context (neglect of syntagmatic considerations)
4. misunderstanding the role of synonyms (neglect of paradigmatic considerations)
5. confusing language and reality (confounding symbol, sense, and referent)
This is not an easy read. There's an awful lot of technical material packed into few pages, making the book quite dense. It is, however, an invaluable resource for the biblical exegete. One will want to give it several reads through, as well as refer to it from time to time as he cracks open his copy of BAGD or Louw and Nida.

When first published in 1983, Biblical Words and Their Meaning broke new ground by introducing to students of the Bible the principles of linguistics, in particular, on lexical semantics -- that branch that focuses on the meaning of individual words. Silva's structural approach provides the interpreter with an important lexical tool for more responsible understanding of the biblical text and more effective use of standard exegetical resources. This revised edition includes a bibliographical essay by Silva, 'Recent Developments in Semantics,' and an appendix by Karen H. Jobes, 'Distinguishing the Meaning of Greek Verbs in the Semantic Domain for Worship,' that provides the reader with a substantive example of lexical study.

Learn in Your Car-German: 3 Level Set: Complete Language Course: Audio Cassettes and Listening Guides (Learn in Your Car Series - Includes Individual Levels 1, 2 and 3) Review

Learn in Your Car-German: 3 Level Set: Complete Language Course: Audio Cassettes and Listening Guides (Learn in Your Car Series - Includes Individual Levels 1, 2 and 3)

This course is excellent, either as an introduction to German or as a way to refresh or sharpen your skills if you are already somewhat familiar with it.
There are three levels, and each level consists of three 60-minute CDs. (You can buy each level separately; but getting the three levels as a set is cheaper than buying them separately.)
Each CD is sub-divided into 10 or 11 small lessons of increasing difficulty. The lessons start with very simple vocabulary, then simple phrases using that vocabulary, then simple sentences in the present tense, then more advanced vocabulary and phrases, and then more complex sentences, including the most common verb tenses and moods (present, past, future, compound tenses (I HAVE GONE), conditional (I WOULD GO), imperative (GO AWAY!), and subjunctive (I HOPE HE'LL GO.).
The range of subject matter also expands gradually. The first level covers what might be called "survival skills," the topics you need to know right away, like transportation, money, hotel, directions, restaurant, shopping, telling time, and numbers. Later lessons include vocabulary and concepts of a more general nature, though "survival skills" are also given additional, more advanced treatment.
All of the CDs follow the same methodology - the target word, phrase, or sentence is given in English, followed by a pause, then the German translation is given, followed by another pause, followed by a repetition of the German translation. I can tell you from personal experience that this constant repetition works very well. Having the CDs playing in your car or on a headset while jogging (my personal favorite!), is a painless but effective way to learn a new language or review a previously learned language.
Each level includes a 50-page booklet that contains a verbatim transcript of each lesson, so if you have trouble understanding a particular word here or there, you can cheat by looking it up in the booklet. (I would never do that! OK, well maybe once or ten times.) Also, some grammatical rules are explained in the booklet. I think that feature is very helpful. Knowing what the general rule is can help you see how individual phrases follow a general pattern, which helps the learning process. Putting explanations like that in the booklet, and not on the CD, was another good feature, since you don't want to keep hearing the same lecture on grammar over and over and over again on the CD.
Granted, there's more to German than what can be covered in just nine hours, but this is an excellent intro or refresher course, and has a lot of useful features.
