Unfortunately, this is the required text for the Japanese classes at Fullerton College (CA). (Maybe a better text does not exist.)
It is impossible to look up anything. The dialog examples are very lacking. The examples are very narrow, staying with students talking to other students. I don't want to learn how to ask someone what their major is, I want to be able to talk in a normal situation.
Some of the phrases are not commonly used. The vocabulary doesn't even include some common words.
The most frustrating thing is how hard it is to find out how to say something you want to say--it is difficult to look up anything. This text is just organized poorly. It also needs to be much larger, with many more conversation examples. It needs better explanations of grammar usage.
I really liked "Learn Japanese" by John Young and Kimiko Nakajima-Okano, but volumes I, II and III do not seem to be in print anymore and are probably outdated now. It had many more conversation examples, which are helpful.
