Programming Microsoft Visual Basic .NET (Core Reference) Review

Programming Microsoft Visual Basic .NET (Core Reference)
Average Reviews:

This is the best programming book I have ever read. 1600 of pages of intelligent descriptions and code examples. First you learn the VB.NET language, then you dive into chapters that cover a specific realms like Attributes, Threading, Win32, ADO.NET, ASP.NET, and alot more.
As big as the book is, it does not cover everything and I dont think any book could. Hopefully the author comes up with a volumn II book that covers Network classes, Remoting, and more.
Note that this book is not for the faint, I would recommend reading a beginners VB.NET book. If you have VB6 experience then you will adjust real quickly because this book highlights the differences in comparison to VB.NET. In fact there are alot of VB6 examples side-by-side w/ VB.NET examples. As a bonus the book comes with a cd that contains Franscesco's VB 6 book. There will be many times the VB.NET book will point you to a chapter in that VB 6 book.

Area 51 (Area 51, Book 1) Review

Area 51 (Area 51, Book 1)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bob Mayer (AKA Robert Doherty AKA Greg Donegan AKA Joe Dalton AKA Bob McGuire) is truly one of the more masterful newcomers to the sci-fi genre in many, many years. Intermingling sci-fi with edgy military techo-thriller action, Mayer weaves some of the most enjoyable and imaginative fiction I've ever read with each novel. I look forward to every book he writes and have yet to be disappointed. The Area 51 series has been one of the most exciting I've ever read and just when I thought it couldn't get any better, along came the Atlantis series, which is equally as good, if not better.
For those in the know about government secrecy on UFOs and the various black projects and secret operations that they have undertaken over the years, you'll find that Mayer truly did his homework on this series. Mayer name-drops numerous actual military projects from Operation: Paperclip to Project Aquarius as bits and pieces of a puzzle that the government has been piecing together since the accidental discovery of an alien mothership hidden in the Nevada mountains so many years ago.
From clues hidden in the most remote locations on Earth for thousands of years to new discoveries on the Martian landscape, the complex story continues to unravel the true origin of humankind and each subsequent saga is more fascinating than the last. Being a special forces trainer himself, the attention to detail as far as the military aspect in Mayer's stories is phenomenal as well. Bob Mayer is very quickly making a name for himself as one of the finest action authors of the modern age.
If the Area 51 series intriques you, be sure not to miss his Atlantis series (under the Donegan pen name) and his military thrillers such as The Omega Missile (Dalton pen name), The Gate (McGuire pen name) and Psychic Warrior (Doherty pen name). All smashingly good reads!!

Dr. Hans Von Seeckt, who is the only original member of the secret research committee, has observed the marvelous craft in flight and witnessed a fantastic array of bizarre, unexplained phenomena. But Dr. Van Seeckt fears that the technology of the mothership is beyond our scope and an explosive threat to the entire planet. Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis in C (2nd Edition) Review

Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis in C (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Many people on here have complained that this book goes way over the head of students not already familiar with some C++ and data structures. To these comments, I refer you to the product description (or editorial review, whichever) that specifically says this is an advanced text. I apologize to those whose professors ordered this book for intro data structures--I can understand why this book would go past the scope of that class. However, if you know any Object Oriented programming (Java or C++ preferably) and know some basic algorithms and structures (matrices, sorts, recursion, trees, queues, etc.) this book will take you far. I don't even mean that you must be proficient in these structures, just have some basic understanding of how they work. For example, you should know what a tree is (root, leaves, implemented with pointers and nodes) and book will tell you how to use trees (B-Trees, Binary trees, etc.). By the point you are using this book, hopefully you'll have taken the math and programming classes needed to comprehend this text. Otherwise, do not blame the text for being targeted to an advanced audience.

Mark Allen Weiss' successful book provides a modern approach to algorithms and data structures using the C programming language. The book's conceptual presentation focuses on ADTs and the analysis of algorithms for efficiency, with a particular concentration on performance and running time. The second edition contains a new chapter that examines advanced data structures such as red black trees, top down splay trees, treaps, k-d trees, and pairing heaps among others. All code examples now conform to ANSI C and coverage of the formal proofs underpinning several key data structures has been strengthened.

The Best Short Stories of O. Henry (Modern Library) Review

The Best Short Stories of O. Henry (Modern Library)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A collection of 100 or more short stories by O. Henry? My mouth waters already! It's hard to imagine any literary treat that can be enjoyed in small doses more pleasurable than this. I have spent over a year savouring these stories, reading them one by one, tasting his delightful choice of words, digesting his fascinating story-lines, and the warm satisfying afterglow that comes after a typical twist at the end. O. Henry began writing short stories as a prison inmate, and he quickly fine tuned his skills behind the bars and developed into an excellent storyteller. Born William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), he produced 270 stories under the pseudonym O. Henry. His stories are superbly outstanding in at least four ways, each illustrated with five of my personal favorites.
Firstly, his brilliant use of language. These stories were written in the first half of the twentieth century, and O. Henry's use of language easily surpasses that of most contemporary writers. Not only does he have an extensive vocabulary, but his writing abounds with similes and metaphors that breathe sparkling life and depth into his stories, marred only by the occasional "Lordy". "Ulysses and the Dogman" is a fine example of his skills with a language, metaphorically portraying dog owners as victims of Circe, in a hopeless enchantment to their leashed pets. Also exemplary is "Madame Bo-Peep of the Ranches" where a ranch manager has a heart fenced by barbwire just like the ranch on which he lives, and yet the twist at the ending suggests that perhaps we were completely mistaken. "A Comedy in Rubber" uses wonderfully elevated language to farcically portray a class of people today known as ambulance chasers. And "Sisters of the Golden Circle" revolves around the profound bond that exists between two married women who are strangers but yet sisters "of the plain gold band." "An Unfinished Story" employs profound metaphors of angelic hosts to tell the tragic story of poor Dulcie's struggle for survival.
Secondly, his unique insight into the social conditions of his time. O. Henry has a great understanding of the trials of the lower class, and he frequently pictures the lives of ordinary people of early twentieth century America with warm and sympathetic colours. His characters are frequently the overlooked: the struggling shop girl, the unsuccessful artist, the impoverished. Admittedly, some of his images can be hard to comprehend for modern readers, and the distance that time has placed between us and O. Henry's beloved New York means that some of his verbal pictures will be harder to understand and identify with. But his genuine sympathy for the oppressed cannot be missed. "The Gift of the Magi" is the signature O. Henry story, probably his most famous tale which recounts a poor young couple who both give up a prized possession in order to purchase a gift for one another - but ironically a gift intended to complement the other's prized possession that they have just given up. Another story which display his ability to picture the social conditions of his time - but always with the trademark twist - is "The Pendulum", a wonderful portrait of the daily routines of an poor couple and the bursting anxiety of a married man, until the bubble bursts. "The Cop and the Anthem" was the first O. Henry story I ever read, and humorously recounts the unsuccessful attempts of a man to get into jail for the winter - it remains vivid in my mind as a memorable favorite. "The Furnished Room" is a tragic and shocking story of suicide, depicting the depths of despair and desperation of the impoverished.
Thirdly, his warm humour. O. Henry has an uncanny ability to portray the mundane and the ordinary in the most elevated language. Frequently he pits two characters together in a remarkable way so that one outshines and complements the other. And on other occasions he crafts the most ingenious and humorous schemes for outwitting others. One of his most popular stories is "The Handbook of Hymen", recounting the tale of two men in a winter cabin, one armed with the hilarious Herkimer's handbook of Indispensable Information. And then there is O. Henry's fictional character Jeff Peters, a man who comes with the most ingenious money-making schemes, two shining examples displayed in "Jeff Peters as a Personal Magnet" and "The Exact Science of Matrimony". "Let Me Feel Your Pulse" pokes fun at doctors, while in "Next to Reading Matter" an overly eloquent character wins the heart of a senora with streams of articulate talk about the mundane.
Fourthly, his ironic twist. One of the distinctive characteristics of O. Henry's short stories is the ironic twist at the end, which never fails to surprise and entertain, sometimes reversing the entire story line in a concluding one-liner. O. Henry's suspense and trademark ironic twist ensures that readers who have a good literary taste in short stories will not be disappointed. Like the Jeff Peters stories, "The Love-philtre of Ikey Schoenstein" also feature a brilliant scheme - but a scheme of romance - and the way it backfires is unforgettable. Other delightful examples of ordinary stories with a glorious ironic twist include "Witches' Loaves" and "While the Auto Waits". The twist that comes at the end of "The Hypotheses of Failure" is so perplexing, that you'll have to re-read the entire story after reading the ending - but completely delighted at the way in which O. Henry has misled you. But perhaps one of O. Henry's best uses of the ironic twist comes in "The Last Leaf", a warm and tragic tale describing how a dying artist proves as resilient as the last leaf on the wall outside, and through the self-less sacrifice of another.
The Wordsworth collection is superlative, because it contains more than 700 pages of literary gems. It consists of 100 stories, showcasing a wide range of O. Henry's short-story talents. A few popular favorites are missing, such as "Schools and Schools", "Shearing the Wolf", "The Green Door", and "The Pimienta Pancakes." But the reality is that nearly all O. Henry's stories feature his trademark ironic twist, as they do his warm humour, his unique insight into the social conditions of the time, and his brilliant use of language, and that every story in this collection is a literary delight worthy of inclusion. The inaccessibility of some references for modern readers does not prevent these stories from being always entertaining and enduring! Don't pass up on these! - GODLY GADFLY

The more than 600 stories written by O. Henry provided an embarrassment of riches for the compilers of this volume. The final selection of the thirty-eight stories in this collection offers for the reader's delight those tales honored almost unanimously by anthologists and those that represent, in variety and balance, the best work of America's favorite storyteller. They are tales in his most mellow, humorous, and ironic moods. They give the full range and flavor of the man born William Sydney Porter but known throughout the world as O. Henry, one of the great masters of the short story.

Creative Writing: Four Genres in Brief Review

Creative Writing: Four Genres in Brief
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There aren't a lot of creative writing texts that cover all four genres out there, and "Creative Writing: Four Genres in Brief" seemed a promising, inexpensive option to assign for my college creative writing class. The discussions of craft are solid and each section is followed by a checklist that my students found useful. Each chapter includes three opening examples that the craft lessons refer back to in order to illustrate their points, and I found this to be very clear and effective. My two main complaints have to do with the selection of plays and editorial problems with the book. There are only 7 plays in this book (by contrast, there are 26 poems, 14 stories, and 13 essays). I'm guessing the decision to include so few plays was made because the plays take up more pages than the entries in the other genres, but the result is a very limited (and somewhat lackluster) selection of dramatic works. A more annoying issue was the rather embarrassing extent of typographical errors in this book. There are small typos here and there, and at one point, a whole paragraph is repeated verbatim. The complete table of contents in the front matter is correct, but there is also an abbreviated table of contents inside the front cover, and this table of contents contains the incorrect page numbers! Besides being irksome, these typos make it hard to make the case to students that they should treat their writing with care and precision. Why do so when the very textbook they've paid almost $40 for appears not to have been proofread?! With a better/wider selection of plays and some good proofreading/copyediting, this could have been a fantastic book, so it's really too bad.

Warning: this book is only a rumination on the J2EE web services specification, fat on "theory" and with absolutely no real code examples you can run and play with to learn. Unless you are someone who can learn playing tennis looking at people playing it, or become a musician by listening to music, I doubt you can become a web services developer by just reading words and code snippets.
As the author says: "this book doesn't attempt to cover installation, configuration, or deployment except in terms of standard J2EE requirements". I do believe that a decent tech book must have running code to support its explanations and support its value and usefulness. With this text Monson-Haefel is well on his way to win the "Most useless java book of the year" award.

Analog Circuit Design: Art, Science and Personalities (EDN Series for Design Engineers) Review

Analog Circuit Design: Art, Science and Personalities (EDN Series for Design Engineers)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Analysis is a science: there's a right answer out there, and we can all agree when it's found. Troubleshooting is the same way: when the broken bit is found and fixed, the circuit starts working properly.
Design, on the other hand, is an art; there's always more than one way to do it, and the individuality of the designer has a strong influence on the way the design turns out: hence "Art, Science, and Personalities".
This isn't to say that a good designer does unusual things without a good reason, or adds expensive bells and whistles because he happens to like them. What it means is that for designs that are not routine, the designer's personality has a lot to do with how it comes out.
To become an expert designer, you need a well-developed technical taste. Once you have a design that works at some level, it's that sour feeling in the back of your mouth that will tell you that it isn't right yet, that it can be simpler, cheaper, or more reliable. There aren't a lot of other sources of that information.
Arts are taught by apprenticeship. But where are you going to go to get taught this stuff nowadays? EE departments are going more and more to software, as shown by the vast number of graduate EEs who don't know which end of a soldering iron to hold. Jim Williams can't be everybody's mentor, but in this informal (and sometimes whimsical) book, he and his friends show us how the best analogue designers in the business go about things. You know what? One of the most important elements in the art of design is *play*.
Maybe listening in on these guys playing at being analogue designers isn't quite the same as sitting elbow-to-elbow with them, but it's as close as most of us are going to get, and it's terrifically valuable. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to become a better analogue designer, and who is not easily put off by whimsy in technical writing. (I find it refreshing and fun, myself.) I've owned this book for 6 or 7 years, and it's about ready to fall apart from rereading.

Essential English Grammar Review

Essential English Grammar
Average Reviews:

Studying grammar is something most people prefer to avoid. We all know it can help us write better, but we cringe at the thought of "going back to school." I happen to be different: I am a bit of a nerd, and I make my living teaching people to write better at work. After teaching one of my courses, I am often asked by students to name a few good books they can read to continue to improve their writing. This book is the only book I recommend for learning or reviewing grammar.
I tell them the truth: I sat down with a pencil and worked through every lesson and exercise in the book. And I (re)learned a ton. I also tell them that I wrote lightly, because I think I will do it again every few years, just as I do with The Elements of Style. Unfortunately, grammar is a subject that requires periodic review if you are serious about staying sharp in your writing at work. This workbook makes it as painless as possible and costs almost nothing.
I rated this book 5 stars because I think it is superior in all categories for a workbook: comprehensive content, structured lessons, abundant exercises, authoritative author, and low price.

Dirty Spanish: Everyday Slang from What's Up to F*%# Off (Dirty Everyday Slang)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
They never teach you slang in those high school foreign language classes. At least they never did in mine. But of course, we all wanted to learn how to swear in the language we were learning. I became better acquainted with the intricacies of another language when Maria, a foreign exchange student from Colombia, and I became friends. I mispronounced something that caused her (1) face to turn tomato red, and (2) to break out in hysterical laughter. Although I knew I'd just committed some major faux pas, she would never tell me what I'd actually said. That alerted me to the fact that I'd better be careful what I say when I try to speak someone else's language.
A little book like Dirty Spanish is a great tool. Not only will it help you to not sound as if you've just wandered out of Spanish 101 in high school, you'll learn that harmless slang in Mexico might get you a fist in the nose in Spain. Divided into chapters such as Howdy Spanish, Friendly Spanish, Party Spanish, Body Spanish, Angry Spanish and Hungry Spanish (among others), the author also tells you which Spanish-speaking country uses the particular phrase. There's lots to learn in these 126 pages, and you'll laugh along the way.
Dirty Spanish is indispensable for any trip you're planning to a Spanish-speaking country, or if you just want to understand what Spanish-speaking employees are saying as they walk past. (I'd received a compliment and didn't even know it!)
