This book, by the McCrackens has been used by my colleagues and I for about three years. The results of these simple word activities are truly wonderful. My classroom of first graders is able to attack one, two, three and four syllable words using the sounds they hear and the strategies they have learned. More to the point, I find them attempting more difficult words during writer's workshop. Instead of "good", I get "wonderful" because they can hear and spell the sounds. They don't only work at these words during "McCracken time", there is carryover!I hear them saying things like, "this doesn't look right to me" -- not something usually heard at this grade level. I highly recommend this book to all kindergarten through third grade teachers. It is very adaptable and a good review tool. It's one of those few books you'll find in my bookbag at all times.
