I am reading this book for a class, and am highly impressed.
It is an excellent guide to any LIS student interested in academic librarianship. Budd is very aware of key issues & challenges facing the field today and argues forcefully for the mission and purpose of academic libraries in Higher Education.
This book is MUCH superior to Stueart & Moran's book on
Library & Information Agency management; Budd's discussions of library management take a more critical, skeptical stance towards
business jargon & buzzwords, and embraces library values that are often markedly different from corporate values--a refreshing view in a field where so-called "Information Science" gets all the fame & attention while traditional Library Science gets marginalized.

In an astute examination of the content and function of academic libraries, the author presents a detailed analysis of the higher education as it affects libraries and information services. Rather than focusing on management issues, Budd discusses the organizational culture of universities and their libraries. Throughout the text, special attention is given to the structure of communication-both in print and electronically-and to the communities served by academic libraries. The book also includes a helpful analysis of political, social, and intellectual forces in higher education.
