Berlitz Premier Italian (Berlitz Premier) (English and Italian Edition) Review

I have been using the audio CD's and the online version. I had four years of Italian in high school and college so that makes it a little easier. But this is a wonderful way to learn for anyone, especially if you had never been introduced to the language before. In school, you waste time memorizing ect. but now I see that is one way to learn but I believe this system is better.

Webster's New World Italian Dictionary: Italian/English, English/Italian Review

Webster's New World Italian Dictionary: Italian/English, English/Italian
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm new to Italian. I'm studying the language in college. So I was looking for a good dictionary and this is a good one. It has quite a few idiomatic expressions in it as well as the standard definitions of words. My professor has had a few minor disagreements with the dictionary in regard to a couple of definitions. For example, her word for graceful is different than the one provided. But she didn't say the word the dictionary gave was wrong, just not as commonly used.
My one caveat is that this is actually a British-Italian dictionary; after all, it's printed in England. As an American, for the most part, that doesn't matter much. When you look up the Italian word, colore, you'll find the British spelling, colour. That's very minor. However, it does make a bit more different in the examples provided. Sometimes, when words are used in a sentence in this dictionary, the example is specific to England. For example, they'll use Pound Sterling in a sentence about money instead of dollars and Euros. Still not a big deal, but something you might want to be aware of. That may explain some of the differences my Italian professor had with the definitions of certain words.
But overall, a good basic Italian-English (with a British slant) dictionary.

Barron's AP Italian Language and Culture: with Audio CDs (Barron's AP Italian Language & Culture (W/CD- Audio)) Review

I recently purchased this book to help prepare my students for the AP Italian Language and Culture course and I love it! Being that the AP Italian program is still in its infancy there are limited resources out there to prepare the students for the exam. This book is exactly what I (and I'm sure other Italian teachers) have been waiting for! I found the listening exercises challenging but not impossible for the students and appreciate the feedback the book provides for each section's answers. Also, the diagnostic test and the two sample tests in the book were extremely helpful the last few weeks in preparing the students for the exam in May. I recommended to my department supervisor that we buy a class set of this book for the students in the class next year. E' davvero un libro da non perdere!

Street Italian 1: The Best of Italian Slang (Street Language) Review

Street Italian 1: The Best of Italian Slang (Street Language)

If you're learing Italian, even if you're not planning to go to Italy - you may benefit from watching Italian movies. You can learn slang from the movies, too, but having a book which some common expressions spelled out may help you, too. It will also help you if you're socializing with Italian crowd in your neighborhood. It will spice up your interaction and you can enjoy the pleasure of understanding what they're talking about when they use slang.
The previous reviewer pointed out that Italian language has been standardized - all that this means is that everyone is learning in school the same Italian. People from different regions at home may still use the dialect from their own region, so for example, a Calabrese will speak the standardized Italian, but he may also use Calabrese dialect.

Francesca ha una cotta per Giovanni! (trans.): Francesca has a crush on Giovanni! (lit.): Francesca has a baking for Giovanni! Ho mangeato in un ristorante caro, dove mi hanno spennato! (trans.): I ate at an expensive restaurant and got fleeced! (lit.): l ate at an expensive restaurant and got plucked! Mamma mia! Even after years of trying to learn Italian, you still have trouble conversing with a native speaker. Why? Because everyday Italian is filled with slang and colloquialisms. Street Italian 1 is the first in a series of slang/idiom books that teach you how to speak and understand the real language used daily on the street, in homes, offices, stores, and among family and friends. 101 Italian Verbs: The Art of Conjugation (101... Language Series) Review

101 Italian Verbs: The Art of Conjugation (101... Language Series)

I'm in the midst of a two-month intensive self-study of Italian. This little guide is certainly eye-catching, which is why I noticed it in the bookstore. The colors and illustrations serve their intended purpose, which is to jog the memory and prevent boredom. However, as a serious guide to Italian grammar this book is a mixed bag for me. The good points first:
1) The number of verbs presented (101, of course) is just enough, not overwhelming. The index at the back (English-Italian and Italian-English) lists 150 more verbs that follow the three basic conjugations.
2) Limiting the tenses presented to the six most common and useful also makes sense. These are listed in color-coded columns which visually are much easier to follow than boring pages of all black-and-white. At the top of each page, the infinitive, imperative, and gerund forms are listed separately, and at the bottom are some sample sentences. The organization of each page is therefore consistent and easy to follow.
3) The illustrations are colorful and entertaining, and may very well help in retention.
The drawbacks, which are in my opinion fairly major:
1) Most important: the verbs are not presented in any formal order, but "follow a story line." This is in accordance with the principle of association explained in the preface, but makes the book difficult to use: if you are interested in looking up a specific verb, you have to go to the indices in the back of the book, THEN go to the appropriate page in the main text. This gets old very fast.
2) Some graphic guidance with changing accentuation depending on the tense and person being used would have been very helpful--this would notably increase the complexity of the text, but without it one is left to guess or consult another text. Pronunciations are available online, but again, this adds an extra step.
I enjoy browsing through this book but I'm using another, less flashy one more right now.

501 Italian Verbs: with CD-ROM (Barrons Foreign Language Guides) (Italian and English Edition) Review

501 Italian Verbs: with CD-ROM (Barrons Foreign Language Guides) (Italian and English Edition)
Average Reviews:

This book is absolutely packed with almost everything a language student could need. As it lists, there are five hundred one verbs, all arranged alphabetically throughout the book. It lists each verb in its seven simple tenses (present indicative, imperfect, past absolute, future, present conditional, present subjunctive, and imperfect subjunctive) and its seven compound tenses (present perfect, past perfect, past anterior, future perfect, past conditional, past subjunctive, and past perfect subjunctive). It has a page on pronunciation of Italian vowels and consonants, and then it goes into talking about how to conjugate the verbs. It begins with showing how to conjugate regular verbs, following this with the Italian translations of each tense's and mood's name. An example conjugation of an English verb is then shown to help illustrate what each tense means. After this comes further explanation of the verbs' tenses and moods, in which it deals with each of the fourteen given tenses. It simplifies the regular conjugation endings after this by showing what is taken away and added to each infinitive for each tense. Then finally come the five hundred one verbs, each one with at least two example sentences to help the reader understand its usage. Afterward comes a section on verbs which take a preposition, a list of phrases in Italian for dealing with everyday situation, days, months, how to count to 100, currency, weights, measures, temperatures, and clothing measurements. Lastly come two indices dealing with the verbs: first the index about irregular forms commonly found in the language, matching them with the verb from which they are inflected; then comes the index of English-Italian verbs as a cross-reference. This is an awesome choice to not be overlooked. Glancing through the book every so often will help to increase your vocabulary, and if you stick to a plan of learning so many verbs a day/week, you'll be learning them even more quickly. It's a simple and awesome book that any student or teacher would enjoy and appreciate.
