Poetry: A Pocket Anthology (Penguin Academics) (6th Edition) Review

Poetry: A Pocket Anthology (Penguin Academics) (6th Edition)
Average Reviews:

This is a great anthology. The best you are going to find unless you go with one of the giant anthologies. This one is cheaper and definitely less heavy than, lets say Norton's anthology. And because it is a 'pocket anthology' it cuts out the weaker poems making this a strong group of poems.

Brief and affordable, this pocket-sized anthology focus on the poems at a cost well under that of traditional anthologies. Chronologically organized, the selections represent the full range of poetic tradition from popular ballads to contemporary work. Diversity and flexibility are reflected in the selections by women and writers of color—representing over a third of the book—and by the inclusion of virtually every traditional poetic form used in English-language poetry. Updates include twenty-five new selections from previously unrepresented poets, as well as different offerings from previously anthologized writers. Contemporary poets new to this anthology include Joseph Harrison, Brian Turner, Allison Joseph, Sophie Hannah, and Emily Moore. New poems represent poets ranging from Donne, Poe, Whitman, and Hardy, to modernists including Wallace Stevens, e.e. cummings, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Richard Wilbur.

English Grammar for Students of French: The Study Guide for Those Learning French Review

English Grammar for Students of French: The Study Guide for Those Learning French
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am surprised that others have not found this book useful. As an English major in college (someone you would expect to have a greater-than-average grasp on grammar) I found myself lacking in a number of grammer concepts.
When you study French, you are confronted with concepts like "definite, indefinite and partitive articles". Now, in English, you will often use the article which "sounds right". This is actually when you compare your mental database of conversations, schooling, etc to the 2 or 3 options listed, and make an educated guess. Often, you can guess the right answer without actually understanding why it is the right answer, or understanding the concept behind the article.
This book is great for understanding this type of problem. The book explains what an article is (the, a , an) and how they are used in English. Then the book gives you the complementary article in French (de, de l',du) and how it is used in French.
This greatly helped my understand my native English, and how to translate my ideas into French.
The book also covers tense. Even in English, tense is not just past, present and future;tense is also ideas like "am going to go" "I was going to go" and "I am going right now".
The book covers the idea of possessive adjectives (my,yours, his), possessive pronouns (mine, yours, his) which look almost identical in English, and demonstrative pronouns like "this one" and "those/these".
However, this book is an easy read. It is not in "grammer-ese". It is well broken up, so that chapters are only 2-6 pages - enough that you can do one concept at a time.Concepts are explained very simply and examples are given that make it easy to understand.
This book is well worth buying.

Little, Brown Handbook (11th Edition) Review

Little, Brown Handbook (11th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This handbook is all an aspiring writer needs to grasp the technical aspects of the English language. Virtually every nuance of English grammar is discussed at length, including the subjunctive mood (yes, English has one), and the Passive voice (yes, the one your English teacher always asked you not to use!). The book has 883 pages. I will value this even more when I go to graduate school next year.
Why is this book useful? Have you ever wanted to know how to correctly use question marks, commas, and quotation marks? Well, virtually every punctuation mark in existence is explained in the book. Typically rules of usage are given first, and then the explanation is followed by an example sentence. This format makes learning the concepts very easy.
There are also extremely helpful chapters on the use reasoning skills, reading and thinking critically, revising, editing, finding sources, and many, many more helpful topics. The book has sections on MLA, APA, CBE, and Chicago Styles of citing works. So whether you need to write a paper for a Psychology class or an English class, you can find help here. There are also tips included on how to do work in various fields, such as the humanities and social sciences. Another informative section is Glossary of Usage chapter. Included here are commonly misused words, and an explanation of their correct usage (and examples of such usage). For instance, did you know that "lay" is transitive and "lie" intransitive? Or did you know that the past participle form of "lie" is "I have lain?"
I could go on and on about what is included, but there is just so much, it would take more than a few pages! You will have to trust me that this book offers grammar tips, writing hints, citation methods, and other helpful tools. Here is a listing of the contents for all interested:

TOEIC Official Test-Preparation Guide: Test of English for International Communication with CD (Audio) Review

TOEIC Official Test-Preparation Guide: Test of English for International Communication with CD (Audio)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although this book does not provide you with a large number of helpful strategies or tips for understanding the TOEIC test (unless becoming more familiar with late-1970s tacky fashion styles is part of the TOEIC--check out the photos), it is the most important book to have for your TOEIC test preparation journey. This guide, prepared by ETS, is the only one that can give you practice with "real" TOEIC material. Test-preparation guides prepared by other companies try to approximate ETS' style, but they can never match the exact difficulty level of an actual ETS test. In addition, for (amount), TOEIC Official Test-Preparation Guide includes an ample number of practice exercises: There are two mini-tests, two complete tests, and practice questions for each of the seven sections. The authors include explanations for all of the answers too, which is always helpful. Working through all of this material should give you a decent understanding of and preparation for the TOEIC test. The major drawback of TOEIC Official Test Preparation Guide, as stated above, is that it doesn't really help you understand how the TOEIC is constructed (i.e. which grammar points are tested in Parts 5 and 6, what types of questions are most frequently asked in the listening section, etc.). However, since most of the material on the TOEIC is assessing your genuine level of English fluency, "tricks" such as this probably won't help you in the long run. If you're only going to purchase one book to prepare yourself for the TOEIC test, it should probably be this one.

Webster's New World Italian Dictionary: Italian/English, English/Italian Review

Webster's New World Italian Dictionary: Italian/English, English/Italian
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm new to Italian. I'm studying the language in college. So I was looking for a good dictionary and this is a good one. It has quite a few idiomatic expressions in it as well as the standard definitions of words. My professor has had a few minor disagreements with the dictionary in regard to a couple of definitions. For example, her word for graceful is different than the one provided. But she didn't say the word the dictionary gave was wrong, just not as commonly used.
My one caveat is that this is actually a British-Italian dictionary; after all, it's printed in England. As an American, for the most part, that doesn't matter much. When you look up the Italian word, colore, you'll find the British spelling, colour. That's very minor. However, it does make a bit more different in the examples provided. Sometimes, when words are used in a sentence in this dictionary, the example is specific to England. For example, they'll use Pound Sterling in a sentence about money instead of dollars and Euros. Still not a big deal, but something you might want to be aware of. That may explain some of the differences my Italian professor had with the definitions of certain words.
But overall, a good basic Italian-English (with a British slant) dictionary.

Basic Kanji Book, Vol. 1 Review

Basic Kanji Book, Vol. 1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Basic Kanji Book was compiled by four Japanese editors (Chieko Kano, Yuri Shimizu, Hiroko Takenaka, and Eriko Ishii) for the purpose of teaching the first 500 most basic kanji. These 500 kanji are divided up into 22 separate lessons. Each lesson is thematically and grammatically organized for higher connection rate in the learning process. Lessons include Kanji for time, Kanji at the Zoo, Kanji for Adjectives, Kanji for Verbs, and many more. The text is written to the goal of preparing the student for higher levels of Kanji learning by laying out the foundations that lead to the understanding of its inner workings. Though the text is complete in itself for accomplishing many basic day-to-day tasks in written Japanese.
The teaching methodology includes stroke by stroke lessons, examples of each character in compound forms, both "on" and "kun" readings, practice blanks within the book to follow, transliteration of sentences from English to Japanese, various writing exercises, periodic reviews, practical examples of daily use for the characters within any given lesson, fun games to encourage learning, and helpful illustrations for learning mnemonics. Varied methodologies promote fuller language acquisition.
This book is written for the student that has a firm understanding of both Hiragana and Katakana though no prior knowledge of Kanji is necessary. The layout of this book promotes effective self-study though this book could also be effectively used as the primary classroom text for teaching Kanji.
In conclusion, few if any other Kanji learning books do as superb a job as this one in making an otherwise difficult task both easy and fun. Quite possibly this is the best Kanji book for high learning retention and practical use on the market.

First German Reader: A Beginner's Dual-Language Book (Dual-Language Books) Review

First German Reader: A Beginner's Dual-Language Book (Dual-Language Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The introduction claims that "First German Reader is truly a beginners' book. It may be started after two or three weeks of experience with an introductory book to German." I couldn't possibly disagree more. You really should have a few years of classroom experience under your belt before attempting it. The reading passages are highly academic in nature, with a very strong focus on philosophy and poetry. They are often very dense and difficult to understand, even reading the English translation. Furthermore, to fully appreciate many of the passages, a great deal of context is often required. While the notes at the end of the book do help somewhat, they are woefully inadequate in many cases. Last but not least, I personally found most of the content to be pretty dull. These factors can easily combine to make for a very frustrating, and not necessarily productive, reading experience for a beginner. A few short sample passages: "Large industries have already introduced a system of profit-sharing with their employees. But what is much more significant: in all industrial concerns the workers enjoy the legal right of having a voice in matters that concern them. They get a third of the seats on the boards of directors of joint stock companies (one half of the seats in the mining and steel industries)."
"Act in such a way that the maxim of your will may at all times also have validity as the principle of a universal law."The texts are also outdated. Besides the lack of any material from the past forty years and the use of the old spelling throughout, I suppose this fact mostly only matters for the "uber Deutschland" passages, which are intended to paint a broad picture of modern Germany. One of these essays states that "West Berlin is a part of the Federal Republic, while East Berlin belongs to the 'German Democratic Republic.'" Hmm. This edition was published in 2007, but it's clear that none of the content has changed since it was originally published in 1964.
On the plus side, the translations are generally very good for the purpose they serve. They are literal enough that it is farily easy to compare the English and German versions, but (mostly) natural enough to be comprehensible by themselves. There are also a fair number of endnotes that explain references to particular people and places, as well as unusual word usage and grammar. The passages are of just the right length that the reader can maintain a sense of accomplishment and not get too bored, even reading very slowly and carefully.
Despite the blatantly false advertising of the title, if you have a fair amount of experience with the language and a strong interest in German philosophy and poetry, you might find this book to be rewarding. Otherwise, save yourself the frustration and steer clear.

Building Academic Language: Essential Practices for Content Classrooms, Grades 5-12 (Jossey-Bass Teacher) Review

Building Academic Language: Essential Practices for Content Classrooms, Grades 5-12 (Jossey-Bass Teacher)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Have you been waiting for this book too? Jeff Zwiers' newest book, "Building Academic Language: Essential Practices..." represents a "coming of age" with respect to the nation-wide focus, intensified less than a decade ago, on improving adolescent literacy instruction. If secondary teachers are finding that vocabulary activities and graphic organizers alone aren't enough to make text comprehensible to their students, this book may be their next step. Like similar, popular resources, including Zwiers' other activity-filled books, seven of this book's ten chapters include descriptions of subject-specific applications and many replicable models for building students' content literacy.
But this book has something more. The particular value of this book to single-subject teachers is that the author a) zeroes in on the background knowledge about a key component of academic language, b) details the subject-specific features of that concept (some that single-subject teachers themselves may not be explicitly aware of so how could they explicitly teach them?) and c) outlines instructional activities or student references that clearly describe examples (helpful when also displayed on classroom posters) of that particular feature. For instance, Chapter Four:
a) Describes Content-Area Variations of Academic Language, b)Provides an example: Distinguishing how to use the language of science, e.g. description of scientific inquiry, and then c) Offers: Table 4.8 "Language Used to Describe Different Steps of Scientific Inquiry."
Why is this approach important to learning advanced subject matter content? Much of what has been available as lesson-planning resources for content literacy instruction has been based on concepts presented as applicable to all K-12 teachers. The comprehensive, research-based knowledge regarding literacy instruction identified and interpreted by scholars of K-3, and 4th-8th grade reading skills has widely-informed practices for teaching all students for last 15-20 years. Ideas for providing explicit strategy instruction are especially critical in developing students' skills for comprehending text.
However, understanding high school level concepts also involves the ability to mediate a very dramatic spike in the density and complexity of content-specific concepts and applications of the language that express those concepts. Students need help to develop the skills for distinguishing the types, density, and qualities of the layers of meaning expressed in advanced content language (i.e. various combinations of social, high-utility, academic, and subject-specific forms) as part of developing background knowledge. A planning guide in resource books or manuals about secondary academic literacy development might explain that "a history text is driven by an event while science text is driven by descriptions of a process." This appropriately describes the level of difficulty for 4th-8th grade texts, and in some cases many K-3 content books. But when it comes to 10th grade World History, students are expected to not only understand what is described, but also, analyze and interpret multiple events, perspectives, contexts, causes and effects, historical knowledge described directly and in some cases, merely inferred by the text.
It is no coincidence that Mr. Zwiers, a scholar of both second language development as well as reading development, has successfully framed the dilemmas, offered practical, and appropriate options for advancing students' academic language specific to a subject in the same manner in which an exemplary ELD/ESL teacher would approach planning to teach the basic forms, functions (uses) and layers of foundational English language. When it comes to high school level text, how to get to the text's meaning, is not only through it's highlighted words and structural features, or by merely looking for the main ideas of an event supported by the use of graphic organizers, but also by knowing how and what to explicitly mine for in advanced concepts conveyed in complex phrases, loaded with a subject's content. A language-based approach (e.g. teaching students how to identify the specific types of language layers that convey concepts) to significantly advance students' content knowledge makes sense.
This book is an invaluable resource for middle and high school single-subject teachers and multiple subject teachers who want to differentiate their approach to teaching the language of science, vs. history, vs. math, etc. Would love to see a combination of the book's brief final chapter, the helpful lists in the appendices that follow that concluding chapter, and overview information from chapters one and two used as year-long points of reference for: participants in a Japanese lesson study project, ongoing collaborations by colleagues of the same department, interdisciplinary, career prep-oriented academies, or among colleagues of a Small Learning Community. Rigor, relevance, and specificity for subject matter teachers! Excellent!

Many students, ranging from native English speakers to recent immigrants, need help in understanding and using the language of school. Language is the lifeblood of learning in all content areas, and it plays a major role in academic achievement. Building Academic Language explains the functions and features of academic language that every teacher (language arts, history, math, & science teachers, etc.) should know for supporting academic reading, writing, and discussion. The book includes research-based instructional and assessment activities that content teachers can use to build students' abilities to understand and describe the many abstract concepts, higher-order thinking skills, and complex relationships in a discipline. The book emphasizes an approach that builds from students' existing ways of learning and communicating, scaffolding them to think and talk as content area experts think and talk about math, science, history, and language arts.
Major topics and themes include: What is academic language and how does it differ by content area? How can language-building activities (discussions, small groups, etc.) support content understanding? How can we build language abilities for content reading and writing - and vice versa? How can we build on students' diverse ways of understanding, learning, and communicating about the world? How can we more effectively model and scaffold academic language in our teaching and assessment?

Barron's AP Chinese Language and Culture: with Audio CDs (Barron's AP Chinese Language & Culture) Review

Barron's AP Chinese Language and Culture: with Audio CDs (Barron's AP Chinese Language and Culture)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So far, I think this is the only AP Chinese and Culture book out there. I have been taking Chinese for 10 years (born in states, Chinese American), and I can speak Chinese pretty fluently. This book gives a good overview of the exam, but even for me, the culture paragraphs towards the end of the book are a little hard to understand. However, if you have been taking Chinese for a while and pretty good at it, this book will give you a great cultural overview of China (and my mom makes me read this book in my spare time, lol.) The culture part on the real AP exam though, is definetly not that hard. I barely did the listening and writing parts (just skimmed and did the practice tests), and I'd say that the difficulty level is just right. They also have word lists, so if you need to brush up on your vocab, get this. I think everyone who is looking for a review for Chinese (AP or not), should get this book. Very well written!
