Literature & Composition: Reading - Writing - Thinking Review

As a general rule, I tend to stay away from textbooks like this when I teach upper-level English. I find that selections from student-focused anthologies don't always do what I want them to do, or the texts that I want to teach just aren't there.
Imagine my surprise, then, when I realised that this anthology includes Hamlet, The Metamorphosis (including the full version of the graphic novel by Kuiper), The Importance of Being Earnest, and Heart of Darkness. It also has a terrific collection of essays, from Achebe's classic "An Image of Africa" to Wainaina's "How to Write About Africa." It also has a handful of Seamus Heaney poems, a favourite of mine to teach at the upper level.
Your mileage may vary, of course, but I'm delighted by the wide range of texts that *I* actually would use in a class, and the price is actually reasonable considering the content. It's also hardcover, which means it'll last a bit longer banging around a student's backpack.

There are several lesson plans in the back of the book which will be very helpful to a future teacher. However, I was uncomfortable with some of the verbal content within the main structure of this book. It seems to me that the general atmosphere within the book is rather conservative in nature.
1. Some of the extremely conservative overtones within the text can be exemplified below:
a. "In a healthful family, parents or guardians teach their childrenthat sex and love belong together in a committed marriage. The children learn that sex belongs in marriage and to practice delayed gratification." (p. 145)
b. "Children learn that it is not appropriate to be sexually active intheir teenage years." (p. 144)
2. Another thing that bothers me is the efforts they have made to include females actually ends up creating negative stereotypes. I guess it's not PC to say "his" to inclusively mean everyone. So rather than say his/her, this books often just says "her". This usage of "her" makes me feel as though the "hims" are not included. What's worse, are when they do the following (these are listed under suicide prevention strategies):
a. "Try to determine what the source of the depression is. Help theperson make a list of her strengths and the positive aspects of her life. This person should decide on a plan of action that will relieve her depressed feelings." (p.137)
b. "Rewarding activities provide an opportunity to be productive. The person's self-esteem will be raised, and he will feel rewarded."(p. 137)
3. The beginning of this chapter, Family and Social Health lists the following goals: (p.142)
11. I will develop healthful family relationships
12. I will work to improve difficult family relationships
13. I will make healthful adjustments to family changes
14. I will develop healthy friendships
15. I will develop dating skills
16. I will practice abstinence from sex
17. I will recognize harmful relationships
18. I will develop skills to prepare for marriage
19. I will develop skills to prepare for parenthood
20. I will practice abstinence from sex to avoid the risks of teen
marriage and parenthood
Optional Health Goal: I will learn facts about birth control methods.
These are just a few examples of the overall tone of the book.

American Education Review

American Education
Average Reviews:

This work is a usable primer for political and social issues surrounding the contemporary U.S. educational system as well as providing some background history, but is marred by mediocre composition (and editing) and some leftist bias. It also provides a general introduction to the history of minority groups in U.S. education. Should be taken with a grain of salt, but a reasonable starting-off point.
Spring evinces strong opinions regarding centralized testing, and various other subjects. While certainly non-objective in multiple aspects his analysis of various themes--including testing--is nonetheless worthwhile in reminding us of the potential dangers to freedom that can arise in test-centered educational systems. In terms of flaws, Spring often makes references with less-than clear context and makes statements without evidence (e.g. publishing a 10-item list of faults with the No Child Left Behind Act by an anti-NCLB that is exaggerated and with no evidence given). Non-U.S. students may have difficulty understanding various aspects of U.S. educational history without referencing outside sources.
Spring's website can be found on McGraw-Hill here, so can evaluate/sample his writings and thought further:

This book presents the foundations of our knowledge. How do you "know" something? How do you judge authoritative sources? What is the basis of knowing? Is your grandmother's wisdom as valid as your MD mother's? If so, why? In the Information Age, it is often difficult to understand which bricks to use while building the foundations of our opinions and striving for true wisdom. The "Theory of Knowledge" provides some guidelines. An essential book for the required IB course with its name, it should be a required document for anyone who is preparing for higher education in the 21st century.

Direct Instruction Reading (4th Edition)

Direct Instruction Reading, gives away ALL the secrets of the designers of Reading Mastery, one of the most effective reading programs available today. The text gives ALL the details necessary to teach reading successfully. The text explains how to teach explicit, systematic phonics for beginning readers and why it is necessary. The text leads the reader through a comprehensive description of methods for every step in learning to read. From teaching how to sound out words, through learning irregular words, to fluent decoding and passage reading, the authors provide techniques of instruction all the way up to teaching children how to get the most from content-area textbooks. The text includes exactly the kind of information teachers need to be able to teach phonics, such as the most common sounds of letters, blends and sound combinations as well as how to teach students to blend, how to deal with irregular words, how to teach the magic "e" rule and countless other specifics. A comprehensive set of field-tested teaching scripts provide efficient and effective wording for teaching more than 36 common reading objectives - ranging the gamut from phonemic awareness skills to advanced story reading comprehension. Informed by years of teaching and supervising reading instruction this text has concrete suggestions for dealing with just about every problem a teacher might have in reading instruction- examples include how-to-tips for students who are not: blending sounds, paying attention, reading correctly, understanding vocabulary, reading with fluency, comprehending their reading, making adequate inferences, and so on. This book has been used as the text for the reading class in three universities in which I have taught. I have taught from it, and previous editions, for several years. I believe it is one of the most useful textbooks I have ever read. It truly teaches everything one needs to know about teaching reading. I give it my highest recommendation. Based on the latest guidelines from the National Reading Panel, this practical guide to teaching reading uses the direct instruction reading approach, a proven program that's especially powerful with the most vulnerable of learners—those at risk because of poverty, disability, and/or a limited command of English. The emphasis is on inclusion, which uses language and demonstrations understood by all children. Nationally known and respected authors don't simply list method after method; rather, they provide a specific repertoire of carefully sequenced procedures that teach decoding, comprehension, content reading, and study skills. Strategies are recommended for each skill to be mastered; discussions of optimal timing and error correction, along with numerous examples, are included. In addition, the authors carefully and thoughtfully examine the relationships among different reading skills. For educators who need a thoughtful, sensitive, and informative book that will enhance their ability to teach reading, to any student in any context.

Speed Mathematics: Secret Skills for Quick Calculation Review

Speed Mathematics: Secret Skills for Quick Calculation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A farmer told me, Your methods don't help me milk the cows. He was right, and his comments were about as relevant as the two reviews by people who haven't read my book.
Firstly, Trachtenberg's book was criticised for similar reasons forty years ago. I was a fan of Trachtenberg and thought that the criticism was unfair because the critics had misunderstood the purpose of the book. The book was discarded by the critics as discredited. It was still read, and inspired a love for mathematics in many who went on to make their career in education or professions requiring mathematics.
My critic states he has not read my book and then says my book doesn't teach how to multiply large numbers mentally. It does. It teaches the same method as Trachtenberg. We both got our method from the same source. My book does not teach the two-finger method of multiplication. I have never liked it.
My book begins with a method for multiplying one and two-digit numbers. Using the method, children master their multiplication tables in minutes. Instead of being difficult to remember, and a disaster, very young children use the method to master their multiplication tables and learn their basic number facts in record time. Educational authorities and faculties of education in many universities around the world are recommending my books and my methods.
My critic states I don't explain the simple algebraic formula behind my methods. I do. This is the problem with criticising a book you haven't read. In fact, I give several explanations that can be understood by fourth grade students.
Trachtenberg teaches a separate formula for multiplication by each number up to twelve, each involving several steps. They are difficult to learn and to remember. I teach one simple formula that allows anyone to instantly master his or her tables up to the twenty times table and beyond.
My methods for long division and for finding square roots are also much easier to master than Trachtenberg's.
I do not mind criticism, but I like it to be fair and accurate. I have taught the methods around the world, taught thousands of teachers and student teachers, and hundreds of thousands of students. I have received a lot of feedback from students who tell me they are using the methods successfully in the classroom, and from technicians and engineers who are showing off on the job. Teachers of primary (elementary) school children tell me the children ask if they can do mathematics for the rest of the day. This is unheard of.
I have emails from professors of mathematics, from engineers and engineering students as well as young children, who tell me the book has opened up new horizons for them. No one has written that he or she found the methods difficult or the steps difficult to memorise. As you read the explanations in order you find it makes sense and there is no difficulty.
My critic's biggest mistake was that he did not understand the purpose of the book. It was not meant to teach anyone to milk their cows. Nor was the purpose to enable people to multiply six-digit numbers by five-digit numbers mentally, although it does teach this if you want to do it. The purpose is to teach an easy way to solve mathematical problems and to give an understanding of the basics of mathematics. I have plenty of email from children who found the methods easy, and it is interesting that students who excel at mathematics love the methods as well as the students who have believed they are mathematically hopeless. One benefit of the book is it not only teaches you how to solve problems, but it also teaches you what you say in your head to solve them.
Read the book for yourself and make up your own mind.

The World of Words: Vocabulary for College Students Review

The World of Words: Vocabulary for College Students
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use Margaret Richek's book for tutoring purposes, both in one-on-one and group settings, for basic vocabulary and language skills. The primary purpose of this text is to strengthen the vocabulary of the learner. It is designed with the adult learner in mind, tailoring the vocabulary and language exercises to be of use to those who are continuing their education toward GED, community college and general literacy skills.
Each chapter of the book has three key elements - word mastery, learning strategies, and interesting features of words. In the mastering of words, each chapter presents the tried-and-true vocabulary list, to be used again and again in the course of the chapter (and repeated occasionally throughout later chapters). Several sentences are used to put the words in context. It is not simply a dull list of definitions - words are connected, and related words given.
Learning strategies are introduced in each chapter as well. These include use of a dictionary (how can you look up a word when you don't know how to spell it?), using context clues to figure out the meaning of a word, analysing word elements by parts (prefixes, suffixes, etc.), and learning words in settings such as forms, newspapers, and other familiar settings.
The special interest sections include articles that highlight the vocabulary (articles include the history of Ben & Jerry's, stories of how cars get named, biographical stories of famous people like Jackie Robinson, and more), as well as brief histories of words and word categories.
Each chapter has a variety of exercises - mix and match, word association, fill in the blank, analyzing paragraphs, discussion questions for the reading passages, and more.
The one thing I would wish for this text would be a general glossary or dictionary at the end of the book, for students to use with greater ease in looking up the meanings of words. This could be organised in the manner of a dictionary, to be useful for the dictionary use exercises, too. Other than this, `The World of Words' serves as a very useful guide in language arts, reading and writing classes, as well as for individual tutoring for those looking to enhance their basic literacy skills.

This text aims to develop vocabulary skills by teaching students three basic strategies: dictionary skills, context clues, and word elements, all within an approach that links students' general knowledge to vocabulary and helps students see that vocabulary is relevant to their lives. Unifying themes for each chapter are central to the author's approach, as are the carefully paced lessons and exercise sequences. The text includes readings on subjects from across the disciplines and supplies information that is of use to students in their other or future coursework. Part 1 concentrates on dictionary skills and context clues; Part 2 concentrates on Greek and Latin word elements. The chapters in both parts have a thematic focus, aiming to make vocabulary study more meaningful and providing another way for students to remember new words. In addition to clearly defined words, the author provides "Words in Context" exercises and readings that use many of the words in context. Also, each chapter concludes with a reading passage that uses many of the chapter words in context and gives students practice reading short essays. Also featured in every chapter is a section on English idioms. It presents the meanings of several widely used English expressions related to the chapters' themes - material that should be useful to ESL students.

This book is just what I was looking for when it comes to teaching rhetoric in my AP English Language classes. I wish my district had the money to buy at least a class set for my classroom. Rhetoric is a struggle for some students. The activities in this book will be just perfect for those students. I am expecting to see a great improvement in my scores on the student's rhetorical analysis essays this next school year.

Knowing every rule and writing with perfect correctness will take your students only so far in their quest for excellence. For, beyond grammar, there's rhetoric -- language use that separates craftspersons from scribblers. Readers, too, must be able to discuss how a writer presents a case or constructs an argument. The higher scores on nearly all state assessments and college entrance exam rubrics demand knowledge of rhetorical devices and their effects. When your students are ready to go from adequate to superb, this is the book you'll use to help them. This book is a fantastic choice for teachers looking for a supplement for their AP Language or academic writing classes. Teacher's editions are available from the publisher but are only sold to teachers and schools.

They can related to the character of Aamoo. My children go around the house reciting phrases about Aamoo from this book. To any parent who wants to teach Hindi to their children in an interesting and fun way, this book provides an excellent tool to do the same.
I have used this book along with the Activity Book Hindi Activity Workbook and the basic Alphabet book Hindi Alphabet Book: Ka Kha Ga from the same publisher. The combination has worked well for me.
After my children graduate from Aamoo, I intend to try out the level 2 book Tara Sitara: Tara the Star (Hindi Edition)Tara Ke Kisse: Tara's Stories and the level 3 reader Hindi Children's Book Sonu's Stories: Level 3 Easy Reader. They seem to be the continuation of these theme of books.

This book is a level 1 Hindi reader. Level 1 books help in developing Hindi vocabulary andpronunciation skills for children who have some familiarity with Hindi script. This book contains nine stories. Each story consists of simple repetitivesentences with a simple but interesting story line. On each page of the book, the topmost line provides the sentence in Hindi. Immediately below it is the transliteration of the sentence in English. If the transliterated line is read in conversational English, the pronunciation would be similar to the one in Hindi. The line at the bottom of the page translates the sentence in English. The book consists of nine stories, each teaching new basics words of Hindi through repetetive sentences in an interesting anecdotal manner.

What Your Third Grader Needs to Know (Revised Edition): Fundamentals of a Good Third-Grade Education (Core Knowledge Series) Review

What Your Third Grader Needs to Know (Revised Edition): Fundamentals of a Good Third-Grade Education (Core Knowledge Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Parental spelling errors aside, this series is a very good foundation for a thorough education.
Each book in the series covers the basic subjects (language arts, math, science, geography, world civilization, American civilization and fine arts.) It is not intended to be a child's only source of materials, but rather a guideline for what should be covered each year.
I would not imagine that a child would sit down with the book and read through it; that is not actually the intention of the editor. Rather, it covers the basic subjects and give further resources where the parent or teacher can find more information on the subjects.
As any reviewer of this book should have read, in the Introduction, the editor writes, "The books in this series are designed to be useful tools for parents and teachers, both at home and in school. They are called 'resources' to signal that they do not replace the regular local school curriculum, but rather serve as aids to help children gain some of the important knowledge they will need to make progress in school and be effective in society."
For my children, we use checksheets that cover the material in the books, but use corresponding reference matter that we already have. For the younger kids (grades K - 2), I would not recommend sitting them down with the book at all... but rather, sitting down with them - reading it with the child - making it interesting. Looking for more data via the internet, or World Book, or atlases.
The idea behind the series is that if each school district, private school and homeschool uses a different format each year, children who move around will be at a severe disadvantage. A child going from a homeschool environment to a public school, for instance, may spend two years studying the same material, and may miss some other vital component to his education completely. The Core Knowledge series, used as it is in private and public schools alike, eliminates this problem.
Someone with a 3rd grader in a private school that uses the Core Knowledge guidelines will know their child is "on track" with the public school's 3rd graders, if they use the same system. Then, if that privately educated 3rd grader transfers to the public school in 4th grade, he is not at a great disadvantage.
Since we create our own curriculum, this is a very nice reference to have. I make sure everything in these books are covered in my children's homeschooling. That doesn't mean it's all we do! But we do cover this material.
The 3rd grade book covers extensively the Roman Empire, including Roman mythology, the Roman invasions of North Africa, and the rise of Islam. American history stretches from the first Americans through European settlements in America and culminates in the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The math section is strictly to be used as a guideline for what the typical 3rd grader should be learning in math. Explanations for various math concepts are given, but exercises must come from another source.
Science briefly covers the food chain, environmental pollution, animals that live in colonies, the human nervous system, electricity, chemistry, astronomy and famous scientists. Again, this information is not intended to be the sole source of educational materials for your child, but rather an overview of the subjects that should be covered in 3rd grade.
Language Arts contains excerpts from a few classics "Arabian Nights" and "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", among others, some poetry, grammar, sayings and phrases and Norse mythology.
I highly recommend these books to homeschoolers, teachers and all parents who want to ensure their child is receiving a comprehensive education... I have been using them for years now, and my children are doing very well...

Writing Measurable IEP Goals and Objectives Review

Writing Measurable IEP Goals and Objectives
Average Reviews:

If you are involved in education and in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process in particular, this book may be a lifesaver. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) an Individual Education Plan (IEP) is required for those individuals with a disability. How to write an IEP that complies with the law is the crux of this book.
The IEP goals are required to be measurable, an item that educators often think they have covered when in fact they have not. The authors do an excellent job of detailing how to document the Present Level of Performance (PLOP), Objectives, and Goals.
The last half of the book contains sample Best Practice PLOPs, Objectives, and Goals. Although it is filled with acronyms (as are most texts involving government regulation) at least they define each of them before proceeding to use them. For those involved with the IDEA and the IEP process in particular and feeling overwhelmed with the legal requirements "Writing Measurable IEP Goals and Objectives" can bring some relief by providing much needed guidance on how to meet the needs of the students while complying with the IDEA.

21st Century Skills: Learning for Life in Our Times Review

21st Century Skills: Learning for Life in Our Times
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

First off, thanks to the authors for writing a book that is applicable to teaching and learning. I've read 6 other books on 21st century skills topics and none have come close to providing models, examples, etc. on teaching and learning. In this book the authors spend less time detailing the changes in our world that are bringing an emphasis on "21st century skills" back to the forefront and more time on defining the skills and a learning framework to be used by educators in assisting students acquisition of these skills. The text details each "21st century skill" with descriptors of what students should be able to do. For educators, this is paramount in designing performance tasks and/or evaluating student performance tasks as actually being a "21st century skill." The authors then provide a learning framework or the "the project learning bicycle" and finish up with good descriptors of system changes to promote the implementation of their ideas. To sum up my thoughts, this is a book written for educational practitioners.

What a pleasure to find a book that is fun for parents as well as the young child they use it with. In addition, this book cuts to the quick by offering only what is necessary for kindergarten readiness, and thereby prevents overworking the child--and the parent wanting to cover all the bases. No more searching around for the right workbooks or information you need to prepare your child--it's all here, in colorful, lively, and re-usable format! Great for homeschoolers as well as any home with children from toddler-age to pre-school--or the slow learner needing a new way to approach basics. My three-year-old and I are having great fun with this. Highly recommend.

Music Matters: A New Philosophy of Music Education Review

Music Matters: A New Philosophy of Music Education

I'm currently a PhD student in music education (and, also, a Band director). I've been required to read several books on the Foundations of Music Education for my course requirements. Compared to the others I've studied so far by Mark, Abeles, Reimer, and Swanwick, Music Matters is by far the most intelligent and comprehensive. It's more challenging to read than any of the others, but it's worth the effort.

There is a mystery about music. On one hand, music making and music listening have occupied a prominent place in every culture since the dawn of recorded history and people everywhere continue to engage in a variety of musical experiences as part of their daily lives. Yet questions about the nature and value of music and its importance as a subject of education remain perplexing to many thinkers and are still hotly debated, even today. As a result, while music has been part of the school curriculum since antiquity, its profound contribution to general education has never been harnessed--until now. What is music? Does music deserve a place in general education? If so, why? Music Matters builds new answers to these basic questions through a wide-ranging examination of music as a diverse human practice. The result is a ground-breaking philosophy of music education that provides critically reasoned perspectives on the nature and significance of performing, listening, musicianship, multiculturalism, creativity, consciousness, curriculum development, and more. Indeed, Music Matters is exceptional for the attention it pays to many aspects of music and education that previous music education doctrine either misses or ignores altogether. Following an incisive critique of past thinking, this important text develops a multidimensional concept of music that explains why music making and listening are unique forms of thinking and unique sources of the most important kinds of knowing that human beings can gain. In a richly detailed narrative that examines a wealth of recent philosophical and psychological research, the author constructs a compelling philosophical foundation that allows teachers to affirm to themselves and others that music deserves a central place in the education of all people. Among the many working ideas of this new philosophy is a distinctive concept of "curriculum-as-practicum" that explains how music educators can fulfill their educational mandate.Invaluable as a core text for courses on foundations of music education or philosophy of music education at both the undergraduate and graduate level, Music Matters provides educators with critically reasoned perspectives on the "why, what, and how" of music teaching and learning, arguing convincingly that music is one of the most vital, dynamic, and practical pursuits in the human repertoire and, therefore, fundamental to the full development of the individual and collective self.
