Messages 2D - Paper Review

Messages 2D - Paper

The authors have created a very in depth but easy to read psycho analysis of poor communication skills and ways for individuals to help themselves change their attitude and methods of communicating with others.
Listening is probably the most important skill of communication that most of people lack. Many do not even think of listening as communication. I was guilty of trying to ancticipate or guess what the other person was going to say, already working out my reactive answer and therefore not hearing the last half of the conversation. It takes a bit of self control and discipline to be able to really listen.
People have a habit of not coming to the point for fear of being rejected or hurting the other persons feelings. The person giving the message learns how to take the sting out of the message by not blaming or accusing but still being direct. It is a different way of wording your sentences but I was amazed at the way this technique can defuse a tense situation.
If you find that you are sometimes missunderstood or fear of the reaction from telling your boss, wife, girlfriend or work colleague what you really think, then I would highly recommend purchasing this book. It is a great book for everybody.

I have worked with hundreds of books and materials teaching EFL/ESL in Asia and the U.S., and this book has the some best listening activities out of everything else that I have seen. One of my favorite features is the that the cassette uses a great variety of voices and accents.

The day to day grind can be done without saying much. It's when the machine stops working well where the great leaders emerge. "The Communicators: Leadership in the Age of Crisis" is an inspirational business read from Richard S. Levick as he provides advice and wisdom from the great leaders in business who have taken a down period and turned it into truly something special for their people. With a foreword from billionaire Steve Forbes, "The Communicators" is a choice pick for anyone who wants to call themselves a leader in business.

The Communicators: Leadership in the Age of Crisis redefines the professional strategies and personal qualities that this current age of incessant crisis demands of leaders in corporate C-suites, boardrooms, courtrooms, and in the corridors of political power. Drawing on dozens of extensive interviews with prominent leaders who describe and reflect on their most significant experiences, Richard Levick and Charles Slack underscore the heightened challenges and instantaneous risks that confront global managers in an age of digital media and intensified regulatory pressure. The book is designed for executives who want to learn from the best practices of others who have so ably responded to the conflicting demands of multiple audiences and stakeholders. In an age defined by crisis and its four horsemen - speed, transparency, media by sequel, and exorcised regulation - the book serves as a survival guide for business leaders and public figures in the eye of the storm. As Steve Forbes points out in his foreword, leadership today is tied as never before to effective communications and to how we respond to crisis. By setting the tone at the top, today's leaders are the stewards of capitalism.

This is the book of lists. It lists countless way s to enhance classroom communication. It is a relatively common sense book with creative names for common concepts. I liked the book, however, it was overpriced for the value.

Theories of Human Communication Review

Theories of Human Communication
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Littlejohn does a masterful job of describing the various theories in human communication. The book is divided into manageable segments which place the theorists into understandable blocks. Before introducing the various theories, however, he discusses the nature of academic inquiry and what theory building is all about.
His various categories of theories include: general theories, thematic theories, and contextual theories. A person familiar with the writers in these various categories will find this book easy to follow, however beginning students need to be prepared to spend a little extra time with some of this material as it can be challenging when you're exposed to it initially.

THEORIES OF HUMAN COMMUNICATION is considered the seminal text in the field. Littlejohn and Foss present the range of communication theories currently available in the discipline, organizing them according to the scholarly traditions and contexts from which they emerge. Clear and accessible writing, charts that summarize the relationships among theories, and sections devoted to applications and implications help position theories within the discipline as a whole.

Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others (5th Edition)

I'll keep this short and simple. I own the book, and thus far is very helpful to explain the many facets of person to person communication. Lots of vocab words and ideas.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others (5th Edition)

Interpersonal Communication offers a blend of theory and skills that the reader can use to become "other-oriented"–mindfully considerate of the thoughts, needs, and values of others. Fueled by the authors' conviction that "skills inform principles; principles inform skills," Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others maintains a careful balance between theoretical and skills-oriented material. This book integrates a key emphasis on diversity with examples drawn from a variety of age and ethnic groups and special boxes that focus on gender and diversity issues. A chapter on intercultural communication supplements this integral material by relating it to the "other-oriented" approach.

This book is still being recommended by number of institutions in Pakistan, and undoubtedly they are right to recommend it since it is the best ever written book on Business Communication. But the publisher has neither introduced a newer edition nor reprint the same. I had the most difficulty to find this book. I do recommend this book if one finds it somewhere in a used book store.

Messages: The Communication Skills Book Review

Messages: The Communication Skills Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're like me, you'll often think to yourself- "Did I say it right?" or "Could I have said it better?" or "Was there a better way to put it"
This book is organized very well, under sections listed "Basic Skills", "Conflict Skills", "Social Skills", "Family Skills", and "Public Skills". So, it gets very easy to refer to the particular type of communication reference you are interested in. I love the way the book puts forward the theory without attaching any favoritism to which technique to use at what time. For example- I used to live in denial when it comes to "listening". I always thought I`m a good listener. But, after reading the 1st chapter- I realized I use at least 5 blocks to listening - without being caught in defense arguments with myself about it. The book really communicates with you! Its easy to read & is filled with research. It lists very good examples of contaminated communication & suggestions on what could have improved it. They have a chapter on body language as well that's well written.
I haven't read the entire book- I may have covered about 70% of the reading. Most often, I use it as a reference to come back to. If you have been looking for reviews on this book, I suggest that you stop looking! Get it- you cannot go wrong. After all, communication is what you do almost all of the active time even though you don't realize it.

Media Today: An Introduction to Mass Communication Review

Media Today: An Introduction to Mass Communication
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I teach a course in Mass Media and this is the text we use. Regarding the other review left here for the book.. it is really not meant to be casual or 'easy' reading -- it is meant to be an in depth exploration of (often) complicated issues.
Things I like about the text:
- important vocabulary is pulled out to the margins for easy identification
- the importance of media literacy and cultural implications are explored
- various types of media are addressed *as well as* important tangental issues like conglomerates, advertising, etc.
- modern examples that are easily recognizable to students are used
Things I'd like to see done differently:
- The questions at the end of each chapter/unit could be better. Many of them are purely reading comprehension.. which is fine.. but I'd also like to see questions that require more synthesis or depth of understanding.
- It would be great if there could be some sort cross-reference done within the text.
Overall, I give this book high marks for solid information well presented.

Public Speaking: Strategies for Success (5th Edition)

For most people, public speaking isn't something that comes easy. In fact, most people dislike giving speeches (putting it mildly). I was one of those people that didn't come easy for. But, after careful studying of the tips/techniques to give a good speech, ways to analyze your audience, and many other concepts, I was able to give successful speeches, with the confidence that being well prepared provides. The topics in this book are easy to understand and remember, explain nearly all of the issues important for a successful speech, and are arranged in a manner that allows the student to get more sophisticated as he/she progresses through the course without presenting an information overload in the beginning and without holding all of the useful information until the end. I think that this book is a valuable text not only for the student but for anyone that would like to improve their public speaking skills.

Remarkably concise and informative, The Elements of Business Writing: A Guide to Writing Clear, Concise Letters, Memos, Reports, Proposals, and Other Business Documents by Gary Blake and Robert W. Bly is more than just a tool for business people. Taking a common sensical approach, as opposed to a lofty educated tone, Messrs. Blake and Bly do not restrict themselves to business writing, in spite of the title. For the most part, The Elements of Business Writing is a valuable writing guide for just about all forms of writing. The book is strong on: knowing your audience; clarity; precision; and persuasion. When you think about those four elements, you're thinking about effective communication in general. This is something everyone--not just business people--can use in their daily lives.

Milestones in Mass Communication Research (3rd Edition) Review

Milestones in Mass Communication Research (3rd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Students of the theoretical side of mass communications, and who are looking for a historical angle, will find this textbook quite informative. A strong opening chapter outlines the traditions and techniques of communications research, and then the book goes into a collection of influential studies. Some are quite famous, like the case study of the War of the Worlds panic or various government-sanctioned studies on the effects of TV on children. The authors do a good job of introducing each study and explaining its influences on communication theory, and that goes double for some studies that didn't even start out in the communications paradigm but had an unexpected influence, such as the study on diffusion of innovations among Iowa farmers. But those strong points can't quite hold up the entire book, as the writing style tends toward hyperbolic statements of importance, and the individual studies are so painstakingly explained that the book starts to appear extraneous, as one could just read the individual studies themselves and gain almost the same amount of knowledge. And finally, this book is docked one star due to the monstrously excessive retail price. This is a function of forced scarcity in the college textbook market. Paying that much for a paperback book with about 400 pages is beyond obscene. Buy a used copy, so at least you're giving a percentage back to some poor sap who already got soaked by the publisher. I really liked this book. I found it informative, with just enough information to be of help, but not so much that it's overwhelming. By the way, if you liked this book, I recommend you read Denise Pirrotti Hummel's, Speak Milk. Drink Wine. What I liked about Hummel's book is that it speaks to her decision to move to another country (Italy) to give her kids a cross cultural experience. The book is interesting, funny, poignant, and at the same time is a metaphor for every lesson one learns about interacting with another culture, from a business and personal perspective. In fact, the sub-title is "Becoming a Global Citizen."

Essentials of College English Review

Essentials of College English
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the grammar workbook chosen by the university for which I teach. The workbook combines exercises and explanations together.
The best advantage to this is the sections which allow the student to check his or her understanding. At the beginning of each section, about ten questions have the answers at the bottom of the page. Also, the unit review has answers printed for the student's reference.
One of the disadvantages is the organization. For instance, section 8 lists avoiding and correcting for double negatives as an objective. Unfortunately, double negatives are not covered there. In checking the index, double negatives are mentioned on page 128 in section 13. There, the reference is only a hotline query that states what a double negative is.
Another disadvantage is there are less exercises than in previous editions. The previous editions had "Proofreading Alerts," which I thought were very helpful in providing a more practical way to test comprehension.
This is a usable workbook, but it would not be my first choice.
