Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches (Crossing Press Feminist Series) Review

Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches (Crossing Press Feminist Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No poems this time around, folks: prose that gets under your skin and into your head. The late, great Audre Lorde, known primarily for her poetry over the years, wrote what is one of the most compelling books on sociology, sexuality, racism and the nature of human character and existence in the last 20 years. Her charges are damning, but dashed with more than a spoonful of hope when appropriate, and it is impossible to walk away from this book unchanged.
No New Age-isms, no agendas...just common-sense reactions to everyday experiences told in a way that not only everyone can understand, but in a way everyone SHOULD understand.

Theories of Human Communication Review

Theories of Human Communication
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Littlejohn does a masterful job of describing the various theories in human communication. The book is divided into manageable segments which place the theorists into understandable blocks. Before introducing the various theories, however, he discusses the nature of academic inquiry and what theory building is all about.
His various categories of theories include: general theories, thematic theories, and contextual theories. A person familiar with the writers in these various categories will find this book easy to follow, however beginning students need to be prepared to spend a little extra time with some of this material as it can be challenging when you're exposed to it initially.

This is an excellent text for an undergraduate course on interpersonal communication. In addition to easy-to-understand content, the end-of-chapter exercises are helpful (as are the ones that can be found in the instructor's text). An all-around good book.

Public Speaking: Strategies for Success (5th Edition) Review

Public Speaking: Strategies for Success (5th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For most people, public speaking isn't something that comes easy. In fact, most people dislike giving speeches (putting it mildly). I was one of those people that didn't come easy for. But, after careful studying of the tips/techniques to give a good speech, ways to analyze your audience, and many other concepts, I was able to give successful speeches, with the confidence that being well prepared provides. The topics in this book are easy to understand and remember, explain nearly all of the issues important for a successful speech, and are arranged in a manner that allows the student to get more sophisticated as he/she progresses through the course without presenting an information overload in the beginning and without holding all of the useful information until the end. I think that this book is a valuable text not only for the student but for anyone that would like to improve their public speaking skills.

Assessment and Treatment of Articulation and Phonological Disorders in Children: A Dual-Level Text with Resource Manual Review

Assessment and Treatment of Articulation and Phonological Disorders in Children: A Dual-Level Text with Resource Manual
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this text as an undergraduate, and later when teaching the Phonological and Articulation Disorders course as a TA, so I have gotten to know it well.
Strengths:
- Information on structural anomalies and their impact on articulation
- Emphasis on the difference between phonological and articulation disorders
- Description of several treatment approaches and which disorder to use them for
- Good appendices, especially the word lists and passages for screening/assessment
- Discussion of when to treat and when not to treat, as well as prognostic indicators
- Presentation of multiple perspectives on issues (although it's a headache for test-writing)
Weaknesses:
- Descriptions of phonological processes are unclear, and the examples sometimes don't fit
- Information from different chapters is sometimes contradictory (making the test-writing headache worse)
- Terrible formatting and visual accessibility of the information
- Terrible, AWFUL index
- Incomplete glossary--definitions found in the chapters are not always included in the glossary
- Poor goal-writing advice
- Some information is dated (example: it discusses the original Goldman-Fristoe, which was revised several years ago)
I would recommend this text with reservations.

Language Disorders from Infancy Through Adolescence: Assessment and Intervention Review

Language Disorders from Infancy Through Adolescence: Assessment and Intervention
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a strong resource for any clinician dealing with language disorders. It clearly outlines intervention, assessment, different disorders etc. It covers a lot of material, but manages not to feel dense. It also provides tons of ideas for therapy... lists of children's books categorized by what therapy goal addresses (e.g. pronouns)... sample activities etc. Paul does a nice job of summarizing the current research and its implications for the clinician. I honestly don't know how I would have survived my first preschool placement without this book. Whenever I was stumped, this is where I turned. This is the type of book that you never get around to putting back on the shelf for you are always using it. Plus, as an added bonus it reads very well, more like a story than a text.
