Le Petit Nicolas (French Edition) Review

Le Petit Nicolas (French Edition)

It would be hard to overstate the charm of these wonderful stories. Like many others, I picked up this book to help with my project of trying to teach myself French. Not only does it serve that purpose, but it is so engaging that it has held me on course when the inherent difficulty of the language and some cross-cultural exasperation has tempted me to chuck the whole project. No way could I ever write this little dude and his copains out of my life.
Although hilarious, the Nicolas stories also touch you in a much deeper place. He is a little boy full of life and good humor, but he and his friends are also filled with every possible anxiety about growing up and finding their manly places in the world. They are charmingly obsessed with their status and their dignity.
One of my favorite stories is "Louisette," which recounts the visit of a young girl who comes with her mother for tea. Nicolas is pouty from the beginning as his mother dresses him up, in his view, like a clown. And maman assures him that if he doesn't show that he is well raised, he will have an affair with her!
Although Nicolas is always filled with explanations that burst forth in run-on sentences, this traumatic visit brings him close to tears more than once. In Nicolas's world, not crying is one of the main imperatives. Another is assuming a male's naturally dominant [irony] and superior role over young girls, who, after all, cry all the time.
Louisette starts off telling Nicolas that he looks like a monkey and things go downhill from there. She is so much more quick-witted, not to mention athletic, that she repeatedly leaps ahead and distracts him just when he is deciding whether to give her a punch in the nose or to pull her hair. And it is Louisette who is landing all the successful coups on Nicolas. Meanwhile, Louisette is always batting her eyelashes at the mamans and impressing them with what an adorable innocent she is!
As with the "Louisette" story of a young boy having to deal with a very formidable young girl who does not fit into his template defining his superior place in the world, all these stories are filled with such very real anxieties of male childhood. Let me say again, though, they are very, very funny! You love this kid.
How easy/difficult is this book for a student of French. My feeling is that previous reviews have made it seem a little easier than it is. There are definitely difficult bits such as when Nicolas is playing cowboys and describes all the various cowboy accoutrements that he and his friends have hung on themselves. Often, too, sentences are very run-on, mimicking Nicolas's overflowing emotions and self-justifications. And the mannerisms of his speech are realistic and more difficult than the dry dialogue of textbooks. But this is worth a little difficulty - I just want to caution against expecting a child's book to be extremely easy. It is manageable, but not in the first few weeks of studying French.
I also have a two-CD set of these stories read in French which I ordered from Amazon.fr. The CD set is a dramatic reading and it is an absolute delight. But it is considerably more difficult than the book. Those run-on sentences are read in rapid bursts, as intended. The reading wonderfully captures the charm of the book but definitely does not make it any easier.
My only exasperation with the Nicolas books is that I can not share them with my English-only friends. They touched me so much and made me laugh so hard. I hope I have inspired someone here.

Complete Guide to Conjugating 12000 French Verbs (English Edition) Review

Complete Guide to Conjugating 12000 French Verbs (English Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is without a doubt the definitive guide to conjugation of French verbs. I've spoken French fluently for 15 or more years and this is still useful. Yet, it is an indispensible reference and not overwhelming for beginning students.
Reasons to consider no other book:
-QUALITY - unsurpassed. this is a translation of the guide that French people themselves use.
-THOROUGHNESS - Thousands upon thousands of verbs. It shows every possible way to conjugate verbs in French. With extensive crossreferencing it saves TONS of space, only showing you unique ways to conjugate. Very easy to use.
-SIZE - very small, lightweight and portable
What other book is so compact yet so complete? what other book can be so complete as to let you know that when you use verb/subject inversion (to form a question) for indicative present tense regular "-er" verbs, you need to add an "é" (but pronounce as "è") for the 1st person singular (je)? Example:
I love you = "Je t'aime"
Do I love you? = "T'aimé-je?" and NOT "T'aime-je"
This is the best! Consider no other conjugation book, they are heavy and incomplete!

English Grammar for Students of French: The Study Guide for Those Learning French Review

English Grammar for Students of French: The Study Guide for Those Learning French
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am surprised that others have not found this book useful. As an English major in college (someone you would expect to have a greater-than-average grasp on grammar) I found myself lacking in a number of grammer concepts.
When you study French, you are confronted with concepts like "definite, indefinite and partitive articles". Now, in English, you will often use the article which "sounds right". This is actually when you compare your mental database of conversations, schooling, etc to the 2 or 3 options listed, and make an educated guess. Often, you can guess the right answer without actually understanding why it is the right answer, or understanding the concept behind the article.
This book is great for understanding this type of problem. The book explains what an article is (the, a , an) and how they are used in English. Then the book gives you the complementary article in French (de, de l',du) and how it is used in French.
This greatly helped my understand my native English, and how to translate my ideas into French.
The book also covers tense. Even in English, tense is not just past, present and future;tense is also ideas like "am going to go" "I was going to go" and "I am going right now".
The book covers the idea of possessive adjectives (my,yours, his), possessive pronouns (mine, yours, his) which look almost identical in English, and demonstrative pronouns like "this one" and "those/these".
However, this book is an easy read. It is not in "grammer-ese". It is well broken up, so that chapters are only 2-6 pages - enough that you can do one concept at a time.Concepts are explained very simply and examples are given that make it easy to understand.
This book is well worth buying.

There are a total of 19, yes, 19 CDs.
Many of the vendors will only sell you a few of the 19 because they come in 3 sets.
You may not need all of them. You may not need any of them.
If you are only taking French 1, the first set of CDs will work for you. If you are taking French 1 - 4, then you may want to have all 19.
The CDs correspond to the workbook (Cahiers de activities). The Cds will not help you unless you have the workbook.
You must have the textbook, workbook, and CDs all of the same edition or the supplements (workbook and CDs) are useless.
Your instructor will likely require that you have the workbook. You language lab may already have the CD and educational program loaded in its system. You may want to check before blowing fifty bucks for CDs you don't need (especially when you may be required to do hard time in the lab for a set number of hours anyways).
Get the CDs if:
1.) your language lab does not have the corresponding program for the workbook (another words, if they dont already have the CDs loaded on their system) AND/OR your professor TELLS you to get it. Call or email him/her to find out for sure!
2.) you want additional practice at home AND you have the corresponding workbook "Cahiers de Activities". (If you do not have the workbook, the correct edition of the workbook and textbook, then the CDs WILL NOT help you.)
Good Luck! Au Revoir!

Tune Up Your French: Top 10 Ways to Improve Your Spoken French Review

Tune Up Your French: Top 10 Ways to Improve Your Spoken French
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Tune Up Your French" is not your ordinary French book. The theme of the book does not emphasize the normal grammar structures or verb drills nor does it highlight naughty French gros mots. Instead, author Natalie Shorr extends an informative welcome to enter the inner circle of native French speakers in both understanding and imitation. She hits upon ten topics that will bring your formal textbook French to a more comfortable level where you and the person to which you are speaking are more in tune with each other, resulting in less cultural misunderstanding. Her hints cover a wide spectrum from nonverbal cues, sound effects and interjections, through manners, table talk, practical idioms, slang to the all important use of wit and improvisation in language (think the magnificient French film "Ridicule"). By explaining the French response to certain expressions used by an unsuspecting native American speaker, the student reader becomes aware of the nuance behind his conveyed mannerisms, his words, the intended meaning and actual interpretation of any of the numerous expressions detailed by Schorr. The text demystifies many all-important ideas like how the French use more words to convey one word ideas in English, the French idea of food and a meal, the way slang is interpreted more negatively when used by a non-native speaker and the very European way of expressing the positive while using negative expressions. Schorr unlocks the door to understanding this centuries-old civilization by illustrating that language is alive and changing through numerous examples that are gastronomical, historical, philosophical and above all uniquely French and hence somewhat alien to the average American listener and observer. She stresses that once realizatiion of what the recipient of your dialogue understands and interprets, dawns, the non-native will be better equipped to use the right phrases, expressions and gestures to ensure that the correct point is being transmitted.
"Tune Up Your French" is by no means a diatribe about language. On the contrary, the information for each tune-up or chapter is presented in the following easy-to-read manner: a preview, explanation, list of top ten expressins and some reheasal time to review.
The book includes a wonderful CD which runs for about an hour which contains listening and repeating of expressions; the male and female French speakers will review some of the text's highlights and then use dialogue to allow you to practice usage. Very enjoyable.
This book is not for the beginner. The student purchasing this book must be pretty well versed in French basics. Some of the phrases used as examples are not translated; others are. The dialogue portion of the CD is rapid fire (spoken as French is truly spoken) without translation and without repetition.
Nevertheless, I most whole-heartedly recommend this very readable and enjoyable departure from most language textbooks. I would love to see a "Tune Up Your French II" with another fun-to-listen-to CD. Tres Bien, Madame Schorr! Please, McGraw Hill, do a "Tune Up Your Italian" also, s'il vous plait!

French for Reading Review

French for Reading
Average Reviews:

This is a beautifully structured book for teaching yourself to read French (not to write or speak French). It's weirdly expensive, and it needs updating, but it's great anyway. I needed to prepare for a translation exam required by my doctoral program, with a background of a year of French in the seventh grade and enough Spanish and Latin to have a feel for Romance languages. I used this book, making vocabulary flash cards along the way, and I passed my exam.
A tip for choosing a French/English dictionary suitable for beginners: See if there's an entry for "eu" ("had") that at least refers you to "avoir" ("to have"). If there isn't, find another dictionary--one that doesn't assume you know things like entirely irregular past participles.

Essential French Grammar Review

Essential French Grammar
Average Reviews:

Wow! I just finished reading this. I've never seen a french book this good. The first 80 pages go into all the different parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, etc), and explains how they're formed and used. States the rule, states the exceptions, gives two or three examples, and then moves on to the next thing. The next fifty pages are lists of idioms and cognates. I get so tired of language books that teach you things in drips and drabs with lots of exercises and dialogs, and this is perfect, because all it does is teach you french grammer as fast as it can. I wish I had found this long ago.

Other than a good French/English dictionary (I strongly recommend Langenscheidt's Pocket French Dictionary), this is far and away the best investment I have made in my French education. Verbes are one of the most common stumbling blocks for English speaking students of French. This book is user friendly and incredily informative, just make sure you take the time to read over the introduction and familiarize yourself with the various resources it contains.

The Everything Learning French Book: Speak, Write, and Understand Basic French in No Time (Everything (Language and Writing))
Average Reviews:

First, this is an excellent French reference book. I took quite a bit of French in school, but needed some in-depth review so I could help my home-schooled daughter with her "passe compose". Perfect book for that... or if you need to review your reflexive verbs, etc. Well laid out... rules are explained in depth, but in very understandable terms.
Unfortunately, though, this book markets itself as a beginner's book. "Learning a language has never been so quick and easy - or so much fun!" the back cover boasts. I love the French language, but this is NOT a "fun" book... it is 98% grammar, 2% practice. You can literally go pages without seeing a sentence in French.

1001 Most Useful French Words (Beginners' Guides) Review

1001 Most Useful French Words (Beginners' Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most of the book is dictionary style, with French words alphabetized. The entry tells if the word is masculine or feminine and if it's plural. A very brief definition is given, and then the word is used in a French sentence followed by an English translation.
Example: échanger; to exchange; J'aimerais échanger cette robe que j'ai achetée hier. I would like to exchange this dress that I bought yesterday.
Also included is a category section, which lists la famille (the family), les jours de la semaine (days of the week), les mois de la'année (months of the year), les saisons (sesaons), les nombres (numbers), les couleurs (colors), la nourriture (food), les magasins (stores), les occupations (occupations), and les animaux (animals).
At the back is one vocabulary page to help with endings of words, to show some words that are the same both in English and French, and to help with a few other grammatical tips.
This really isn't for someone who doesn't know any French at all, as it could be difficult to follow. It isn't a phrasebook for visitors to France, as a lot of basics that tourists need to know are not included. However, if you have been studying French or need to just brush up on your vocabulary, this inexpensive little book is a smart choice.
