Reasons to consider no other book:

-THOROUGHNESS - Thousands upon thousands of verbs. It shows every possible way to conjugate verbs in French. With extensive crossreferencing it saves TONS of space, only showing you unique ways to conjugate. Very easy to use.
-SIZE - very small, lightweight and portable
What other book is so compact yet so complete? what other book can be so complete as to let you know that when you use verb/subject inversion (to form a question) for indicative present tense regular "-er" verbs, you need to add an "é" (but pronounce as "è") for the 1st person singular (je)? Example:
I love you = "Je t'aime"
Do I love you? = "T'aimé-je?" and NOT "T'aime-je"
This is the best! Consider no other conjugation book, they are heavy and incomplete!

(More customer reviews)I am surprised that others have not found this book useful. As an English major in college (someone you would expect to have a greater-than-average grasp on grammar) I found myself lacking in a number of grammer concepts.
When you study French, you are confronted with concepts like "definite,indefinite and partitive articles". Now, in English, you will often use the article which "sounds right". This is actually when you compare your mental database of conversations,schooling, etc to the 2 or 3 options listed, and make an educated guess. Often, you can guess the right answer without actually understanding why it is the right answer, or understanding the concept behind the article.
This book is great for understanding this type of problem. The book explains what an article is (the, a , an) and how they are used in English. Then the book gives you the complementary article in French (de, de l',du) and how it is used in French.
This greatly helped my understand my native English, and how to translate my ideas into French.
The book also covers tense. Even in English, tense is not just past,present and future;tense is also ideas like "am going to go" "I was going to go" and "I am going right now".
The book covers the idea of possessive adjectives (my,yours,his), possessive pronouns (mine,yours, his) which look almost identical in English, and demonstrative pronouns like "this one" and "those/these".
However, this book is an easy read. It is not in "grammer-ese". It is well broken up, so that chapters are only 2-6 pages - enough that you can do one concept at a time.Concepts are explained very simply and examples are given that make it easy to understand.
This book is well worth buying.

(More customer reviews)This book is a complete joke. It was recently ridiculed in a Swedish business weekly for its description of Sweden. According to the book's authors:
1. The indigenous population in the north of the country are called lapps. The expression sami is somewhat derogatory. In fact it's the opposite! This is as if a European guide book on doing business in the US suggested their readers use the word "negro" instead of "african-american." Also, the Sami number some 20,000 persons, not really vital information if you are visiting a country of 9 million people. Moreover, comparing them to American indians or Australian aborigines is somewhat misleading, the non-sami population groups began to settle what is today Sweden sometime 2000 BC.
2. According to the book English is spoken in the major cities but if they plan to do business outside of the urban centres, they should speak German! This may have been true fifty years ago. A visiting US business person would should definately stick to English, German (with a US accent as well, I presume) will not get you very far.
In short, this book seems as if it's been written based on what the authors could find from a quick scan on the internet.
2. Most people in Sweden speak English.

Essential French Grammar Review

(More customer reviews)Wow! I just finished reading this. I've never seen a french book this good. The first 80 pages go into all the different parts of speech (nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, etc), and explains how they're formed and used. States the rule, states the exceptions, gives two or three examples, and then moves on to the next thing. The next fifty pages are lists of idioms and cognates. I get so tired of language books that teach you things in drips and drabs with lots of exercises and dialogs, and this is perfect, because all it does is teach you french grammer as fast as it can. I wish I had found this long ago.

(More customer reviews)It's amazing to me that the (brilliantly simple) ideas found in this book aren't more a part of public consciousness and discussion, especially 25 years after its publication. These aren't high-flying concepts. They're experimentally proven and frighteningly basic revelations about how humans function, and the fact that they were never a part of my curriculum in one of the best prep schools in the country and then a top Ivy League school simply drives home Hall's point about the state of academia. My only complaint is that the book jumps around quickly and doesn't always spend as much time as I'd like on particular threads. It also isn't particularly actionable, but given its conclusions this is not surprising. I recommend Maps of Meaning by Jordan Peterson for another fascinating look at how the cross-cultural human psyche is configured. It's a powerful counterpoint to the fashionable but vacuous idea that everything in culture is an arbitrary construct, unconnected to millions of years of evolution of the human organism.
