I have found this book's layout to be very clear and easy to follow. The introduction teaches in detail how German spelling are supposed to sound by providing english words that appoximate the sounds. This book seems to contain grammar lessons that are more extensive than those found in the popular "Teach Yourself" course. This book serves duly as a workbook in that you can write your answers to the exercises in the spaces provided and refer to the correct answers in the back of the book. My biggest gripe about the book is that there were no pictures. I love pictures!

501 German Verbs Review

I have read reviews that say this book is limited in its scope.Well, it is limited, and for good reason. This book is meant for one reason only, to give you full conjugation of 501 of the most common verbs in all tenses. If this book had included a broader scope of info it would not be so easy to use. This book is a must have for all serious language students. The one other book I strongly recommend is "750 verbs |GERMAN| and their uses". That book covers the many many meanings a verb can have and how it can change meaning with various prepositions and also gives numerous example sentences per verb/meaning.

From Šchzen (to groan) to ziehen (to pull), 501 of the most commonly used German verbs are presented alphabetically with translations. The arrangement is one verb per page in easy to comprehend table form. Each verb is listed with its principal parts and followed by complete conjugation in all tenses. Additional material includes tables of strong verbs arranged according to pattern of change, and a section on prefix verbs and model auxiliaries. An added feature in this edition is a set of 27 verb tests with answers explained. Language students will also find weather expressions as they are used with impersonal verbs, a selection of German idioms and proverbs, and a concise review of rules for verb tenses and moods. This book, with its emphasis on grammatical form, makes a fine classroom supplement for beginner, intermediate, and advanced courses in German.

This course is excellent, either as an introduction to German or as a way to refresh or sharpen your skills if you are already somewhat familiar with it.
There are three levels, and each level consists of three 60-minute CDs. (You can buy each level separately; but getting the three levels as a set is cheaper than buying them separately.)
Each CD is sub-divided into 10 or 11 small lessons of increasing difficulty. The lessons start with very simple vocabulary, then simple phrases using that vocabulary, then simple sentences in the present tense, then more advanced vocabulary and phrases, and then more complex sentences, including the most common verb tenses and moods (present, past, future, compound tenses (I HAVE GONE), conditional (I WOULD GO), imperative (GO AWAY!), and subjunctive (I HOPE HE'LL GO.).
The range of subject matter also expands gradually. The first level covers what might be called "survival skills," the topics you need to know right away, like transportation, money, hotel, directions, restaurant, shopping, telling time, and numbers. Later lessons include vocabulary and concepts of a more general nature, though "survival skills" are also given additional, more advanced treatment.
All of the CDs follow the same methodology - the target word, phrase, or sentence is given in English, followed by a pause, then the German translation is given, followed by another pause, followed by a repetition of the German translation. I can tell you from personal experience that this constant repetition works very well. Having the CDs playing in your car or on a headset while jogging (my personal favorite!), is a painless but effective way to learn a new language or review a previously learned language.
Each level includes a 50-page booklet that contains a verbatim transcript of each lesson, so if you have trouble understanding a particular word here or there, you can cheat by looking it up in the booklet. (I would never do that! OK, well maybe once or ten times.) Also, some grammatical rules are explained in the booklet. I think that feature is very helpful. Knowing what the general rule is can help you see how individual phrases follow a general pattern, which helps the learning process. Putting explanations like that in the booklet, and not on the CD, was another good feature, since you don't want to keep hearing the same lecture on grammar over and over and over again on the CD.
Granted, there's more to German than what can be covered in just nine hours, but this is an excellent intro or refresher course, and has a lot of useful features.

First German Reader: A Beginner's Dual-Language Book (Dual-Language Books) Review

First German Reader: A Beginner's Dual-Language Book (Dual-Language Books)

The introduction claims that "First German Reader is truly a beginners' book. It may be started after two or three weeks of experience with an introductory book to German." I couldn't possibly disagree more. You really should have a few years of classroom experience under your belt before attempting it. The reading passages are highly academic in nature, with a very strong focus on philosophy and poetry. They are often very dense and difficult to understand, even reading the English translation. Furthermore, to fully appreciate many of the passages, a great deal of context is often required. While the notes at the end of the book do help somewhat, they are woefully inadequate in many cases. Last but not least, I personally found most of the content to be pretty dull. These factors can easily combine to make for a very frustrating, and not necessarily productive, reading experience for a beginner. A few short sample passages: "Large industries have already introduced a system of profit-sharing with their employees. But what is much more significant: in all industrial concerns the workers enjoy the legal right of having a voice in matters that concern them. They get a third of the seats on the boards of directors of joint stock companies (one half of the seats in the mining and steel industries)."
"Act in such a way that the maxim of your will may at all times also have validity as the principle of a universal law."The texts are also outdated. Besides the lack of any material from the past forty years and the use of the old spelling throughout, I suppose this fact mostly only matters for the "uber Deutschland" passages, which are intended to paint a broad picture of modern Germany. One of these essays states that "West Berlin is a part of the Federal Republic, while East Berlin belongs to the 'German Democratic Republic.'" Hmm. This edition was published in 2007, but it's clear that none of the content has changed since it was originally published in 1964.
On the plus side, the translations are generally very good for the purpose they serve. They are literal enough that it is farily easy to compare the English and German versions, but (mostly) natural enough to be comprehensible by themselves. There are also a fair number of endnotes that explain references to particular people and places, as well as unusual word usage and grammar. The passages are of just the right length that the reader can maintain a sense of accomplishment and not get too bored, even reading very slowly and carefully.
Despite the blatantly false advertising of the title, if you have a fair amount of experience with the language and a strong interest in German philosophy and poetry, you might find this book to be rewarding. Otherwise, save yourself the frustration and steer clear.

The Everything Learning German Book: Speak, Write and Understand Basic German in No Time (Everything (Language & Writing)) Review

The Everything Learning German Book: Speak, Write and Understand Basic German in No Time (Everything (Language and Writing))

This book is superb! I am married to a native German speaker and need all the help I can get. I am writing as a self taught German student that is trying to learn all as fast as possible. This book starts off slow with very useful vocabulary. There is an excellent pronunciation section which is very necessary with German. I very much like how new vocabulary and workbook pages are mixed together. Everything is index so perfectly so it is easy to find help within the book. All new vocabulary have translation so there is no need for an extra dictionary with this book. The presentation is very well done. It is a basic level book (as the title mentions) so it is great for new students or self taught students. The book can be used again and again for practice. There are so many words to learn and exercises to do making this book well worth the money. I am very sorry this book was not available when I began my studies! The author is very talented. Thanks to him for such a useful book and hopefully there will be more advanced books with audio programs in the future.
