The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women: The Traditions in English Review

The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women: The Traditions in English
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The female literary tradition, long neglected, emerges as one that has not only developed concurrently with, but has also influenced male literati. In this large and fascinating volume we meet the minds that analyzed and chronicled the lives these women lived and observed.
One might argue about the selections included and excluded here. Pearl Buck, the only woman to win both a Nobel Prize (1938) and a Pulitzer (1932) is excluded.
The book is divided into 6 eras, each with a lengthy "period introduction" giving historical and thematic backgrounds for the works included in that section.
From the five earliest women writers (dating from 700 to 1600), women began to shape and define their literary voices. England's first professional woman writer, Aphra Behn, whose literary career began in 1670, is the writer who women must honor above all others. According to Virginia Woolf, "it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds."
Here the reader will find rare works such as Jane Austen's "Love and Friendship" and George Eliot's "The Lifted Veil." Three notable novels are included in their entirety: JANE EYRE by Charlotte Bronte, THE AWAKENING by Kate Chopin, and THE BLUEST EYE by Toni Morrison.
Poems, stories, memoirs, essays, plays, letters, novels -- all literary works originally composed in English -- over 150 authors decrying, exalting, agonizing over, and celebrating the things we all have in common: Life...love...and death.
This is a fascinating collection and one that will stand reading and re-reading over a long period of time.

The Heath Anthology of American Literature, Concise Edition Review

The Heath Anthology of American Literature, Concise Edition

This book is outstanding in its usefulness for becoming familiar with recent American literature.

Its appropriate selection of authors and works--along with its biographies, preliminary studies and clarifying notes--make this book a "must" for specialists, for scholars of contemporary literature, for students and for universities.

The present volume (the fifth in the collection) undoubtedly has the same advantages and characteristics of the previous volumes.

I have no hesitation in strongly recommending this anthology.

Poetry: A Pocket Anthology (Penguin Academics) (6th Edition) Review

This is a great anthology. The best you are going to find unless you go with one of the giant anthologies. This one is cheaper and definitely less heavy than, lets say Norton's anthology. And because it is a 'pocket anthology' it cuts out the weaker poems making this a strong group of poems.

Brief and affordable, this pocket-sized anthology focus on the poems at a cost well under that of traditional anthologies. Chronologically organized, the selections represent the full range of poetic tradition from popular ballads to contemporary work. Diversity and flexibility are reflected in the selections by women and writers of color—representing over a third of the book—and by the inclusion of virtually every traditional poetic form used in English-language poetry. Updates include twenty-five new selections from previously unrepresented poets, as well as different offerings from previously anthologized writers. Contemporary poets new to this anthology include Joseph Harrison, Brian Turner, Allison Joseph, Sophie Hannah, and Emily Moore. New poems represent poets ranging from Donne, Poe, Whitman, and Hardy, to modernists including Wallace Stevens, e.e. cummings, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Richard Wilbur.

Unfortunately, the textbook that I use in my high school English classes does not offer an interesting, age apporpriate selection of nonfiction pieces. I purchased this book to help compensate for the lack of interesting essays in our textbook and was delighted to find that this anthology is organized with teachers in mind. Essays are organized by themes, a list of essays to compare/contrast is provided for convenience, and critical thinking and essay questions are provided at the end of each essay.

Prentice Hall Literature: The British Tradition Timeless Voices Timeless Themes Review

Prentice Hall Literature: The British Tradition Timeless Voices Timeless Themes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, a caution: one might expect that any high school literature textbook meets certain basic standards. Unfortunately, this is not the case. And it turns out not to have been an easy thing to identify which publisher offers the level of support necessary to meet basic objectives.
I hope this review will save you some trouble! Look for Prentice Hall.
Prentice Hall's literature textbooks provide a nearly definitive anthology of English language literature and other major works of historic importance, and offer very strong support for classroom instruction. Wherever possible, the literature excerpts are complete works; in other cases, the samples are of sufficient length to provide an effective representation of style and content.
Serving on my county's textbook selection committee provided me with disturbing insights into some ways that some schools prepare for end-of-year testing. When I reviewed literature textbooks from several major publishers, I found the comparison quite shocking. You can make this comparison for yourself by perusing on-line the tables of contents for textbooks offered by various publishers.
The Prentice Hall textbooks are all quite strong. Textbooks by the other three publishers reviewed by our committee were impoverished and spare, teaching exclusively to end-of-year tests. Instead of providing materials to teach the basic skills which are intended to be assessed by those end-of-year tests, the other publishers focused on providing practice in test-taking -- i.e., in bubble-filling and guessing games. For example, one slim volume contained less than one third the text of the Prentice Hall anthology, and offered only a scant selection of writings, all of questionable merit. Among those writings proposed for use in literary analysis were several Garfield cartoons. I have nothing against Garfield cartoons; however, it is not possible to develop skills in critical analysis by reviewing such simple fare.
Students must be exposed to great literature before they can recognize or reproduce effective writing. Students must be provided with substantive information and assisted to develop real skills before they can respond confidently to end-of-year test questions. Instead of learning strategies for guessing, that time should best be devoted to the development of real knowledge and useful skills.
Fortunately, there is at least one company which still provides the materials necessary for an effective preparatory education in language arts. Prentice Hall's high school literature textbooks provide a solid foundation for teaching classic and modern literature to college-track high-school students. Instead of Garfield cartoons and one-line excerpts from some other literary selections, the Prentice Hall textbooks include representative works by many great authors, and challenging questions to help the student learn to think carefully and communicate clearly -- arguably the most important objectives for the language arts curriculum.
A small sample of some of the authors included in the Prentice Hall 11th grade American Literature text is as follows: Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Phyllis Wheatley, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Washington Irving, Oliver Wendell Holmes, John Greenleaf Whittier, Mary W. Shelley, Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Sojourner Truth, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Stephen Crane, Willa Cather, Jack London, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, T. S. Eliot, Ernest Hemingway, Eudora Welty, John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Thurber, Zora Neale Hurston, Robert Frost, William Safire, Amy Tan, John F. Kennedy, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Sylvia Plath, James Baldwin, Flannery O'Connor, Arthur Miller -- and many more.
Nicely done.

The most comprehensive best-selling anthology of its kind, this two-volume survey enables readers to choose among the most important canonical and less-familiar texts of the Western literary tradition in Europe and the Americas. It offers complete texts whenever possible, uses the best translations of foreign-language material, and, when appropriate, presents more than one text by each author. It provides detailed historical and biographical notes and introductions to six literary periods: The Ancient World; the Middle Ages; the Renaissance; Neoclassicism and Romanticism; Realism and Naturalism; and Modern and Contemporary. Individuals interested in a comprehensive look at Western literature through the ages.

Russian Short Stories from Pushkin to Buida (Penguin Classics) Review

Russian Short Stories from Pushkin to Buida (Penguin Classics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't say enough about Russian Short Stories from Pushkin to Buida. To this reader, in whom concentrated knowledge in a few areas trumps familiarity with the whole literature, it is perhaps the best collection of stories translated from Russian since Goscilo and Lindsey's Glasnost anthology, and it's a better general introduction because of its chronological sweep.
Robert Chandler, editor as well as translator of some of the stories, has demonstrated uncommon skill and diligence in choosing and/or translating these works. Moreover, his introductions are at least as good as the pieces themselves!
The lineup includes several exciting writers I hadn't encountered previously, including Teffi, Annibal, Shukshin, Eppel, and Buida. Bunin I've known only peripherally--"The Gentleman from San Francisco" is a marvelous translation from D. H. Lawrence and Leonard Wolff. Chandler's own translations of Bunin, Pushkin, Tolstoy, and others are fresh and interesting, whether heart-rending as in Aksyonov's "God Sees the Truth and Waits," or hilarious as in his outstanding renditions of Babel's "Salt" and Kharms' "The Old Woman." The humor in these latter two arises from the authentic voices he has captured, probably the hardest task for a translator.
I recommend this work for scholars and novices, and especially as a text for university courses focusing on literature in translation.

The Art of the Short Story Review

The Art of the Short Story
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book's title and subtitle are a good summary for a book I feel belongs every creative writing class and on the desk of every aspiring writer. And for only $18.95 USD for 926 pages, the book is a bargain. If you've recently purchased books for a college class, you will know what I mean, I've paid upwards of $100 for a book.
The Art of the Short Story is an anthology of the best stories from the best short story writers. See if you recognize a few of these names: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Stephen Crane, Edgar Allen Poe, Sherwood Anderson, Herman Melville, Jack London, Gustave Flaubert, James Joyce, Leo Tolstoy, Virginia Woolf, Henry James, Franz Kafka, Kate Chopin, D. H. Lawrence, Joseph Conrad, Anton Chekov, F. Scott Fitgerald, William Faulkner, Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Ernest Hemingway, Ursula K. Le Guin, John Updike, Raymond Carver, Ralph Ellison, Joyce Carol Oates, Shirley Jackson, Margaret Atwood, Alice Walker, Flannery O'Connor.
What I like best about this book is that, in addition to the great short stories, the book also contains commentary from each author. The commentary varies. The author might discuss how or why the story was written, or public reaction to the story, or their view of literature, or give specific advice on an area of the writer's craft. For example: Earnest Hemingway's essay is on Crafting one True Line. Jorge Luis Borge's author perscpective is Literature as Experience. Shirley Jackson's essay is The Public Reception of "The Lottery." There are too many to list here but the masters discuss the entire spectrum of short story writing from why to write to elements such as character, plot, style, and suspense to authorial explanation and defense of stories.

The Norton Anthology of English Literature (Single-Volume 8th Edition) Review

The Norton Anthology of English Literature (Single-Volume 8th Edition)
Average Reviews:

The 8th edition of the Norton Anthology of English Literature is edited by Greenblatt and contains "the major authors" only. This thorough overview of the genre ranges from 15 c. Anglo Saxon literature (including Seamus Heaney's translation of "Beowulf") to some contemporary British literature (including work by JM Coetzee and Salman Rushdie). The selections are good ones and do not seem to suffer from a single editorial point of view or tone (unlike the Penguin survey edition of modern literature that is, frankly, a complete downer). This Norton edition includes classics such as John Donne's "Meditation 17", Swift's "A Modest Proposal", Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", an excerpt from Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication on the Rights of Women", "Virginia Woolf's "A Room of One's Own" and so on (it might be a bit thin on the ladies but what is included is the good stuff). As an English teacher and probable reference freak, I am pleased with it.

Average Reviews:

If you're a book lover, how can you not love a book like this? It was my required reading for a literature class, and I was all too happy to have an excuse to buy it. Satisfyingly fat at 3000 pages, it exudes that delicious book smell when you flip through it, and its matte-sheen cover feels good in your hands and protects its sizable contents quite well.
For me, this was worth getting just for Seamus Heaney's wonderful translation of Beowulf. You can smell the ocean and hear the armor clank as this readable version places you right there in the sixth century. Along with the usual excerpts from such works as the Canterbury Tales, you get complete versions of King Lear, Twelfth Night, Utopia, and Paradise Lost. After looking over the excerpts from Gulliver's Travels, it appears that sections 1,2, and 4 are presented complete, with only some material edited from section 3, so you get almost all of that, too. The footnotes for this, and all the other works, are enormously useful.
I have a few gripes about the book, however these don't merit the subtraction of a star in the rating. First - this book is SO heavy. Obviously there was no way around this in publishing, because to put this many pages on good-quality paper the laws of physics are working against you. But I have literally suffered backache from bringing it around with me in my book bag, and have had to sorrowfully leave it at home at times because of this. Second, I wish it included a clear list of which major works are presented complete, for those of us who want to make sure to read the whole thing. My final beef is with the editorial introduction to The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale from the Canterbury Tales. Reading this rant about "antifeminist writings" was like stepping from the high halls of classic academia into the junior-college classroom of some washed-up 1970s holdover. I HATE agenda in my education, and in my opinion, applying 20th century (yes, 20th) sentiments to 14th century literature is anachronistic and inappropriate. But such is the state of education these days, and here is your evidence in a volume that should have known better. However, that has been the only thing I have come upon that irritated me.
Buying this book is a great way to get a bunch of classics all at once, and there is so much to it that you can enjoy a long read or a short read anytime you want, once you find a way to work around its mass. I look forward to the years of reading pleasure I'll get from my copy.
