The Chomsky-Foucault Debate: On Human Nature Review

(More customer reviews)Noam Chomsky and Michel Foucault are arguably two of the most influential thinkers of the late twentieth century - important contributors to Western intellectual history. Despite their significance, however, this small text has limited value. It is a hodgepodge of loosely related and previously published material much of which is available on line for free.
The book, as its title suggests, is notionally centered on the 1971 Dutch Television debate between Chomsky and Foucault moderated by Edlers on the question of whether or not there such a thing as an "innate" human nature. While the `debate' is largely an exercise in the two protagonists talking past each other; it is nonetheless an interesting small episode in contemporary intellectual history. The video and transcript have been available on-line for years. Had the remainder of the text been post-debate reflections or new analysis of the issues raised in the discussion the text could have been quite interesting. Sadly, this is not the case.
The remaining four essays are transcripts of interviews and presentations by Foucault and Chomsky on other subjects - Chomsky does offer a few small asides on the debate at the end of one interview. The two chapters on Chomsky are transcripts of 1976 interviews with Ronat. `The Philosophy of Language' is a collection of Chomsky's musings on the modern intellectual project while `Politics' provides a feel for his well known political views which range from insightful reflections on the nature and function of societal power structures to his more fringe conspiracy-type views. While interesting small pieces they have been previously published and have only a tenuous link to the earlier debate.
Michel Foucault's `Truth and Power' is a transcript of an interview with Fontana and Pasquino in the mid 70s that focuses on the evolution and focus of Foucault's thought. While "Omnes et Singulatim: Toward a Critique of Political Rason is based on lectures Foucault gave at Stanford in the 80s discussing power and reason in modern society (available on line). Again these are fine small pieces, however, in the current text they feel like filler.
Chomsky and Foucault are important and interesting thinkers. That said, I do not see the value of this text. Some original analysis of their debate could have been interesting.

The Oxford English Grammar Review

(More customer reviews)As the other reviewer has said, this isn't a usage guide. It is partly a reference grammar, but also partly a textbook on the whole English language. Indeed, the title may be misleading, because most self-proclaimed grammars of English limit themselves to sentence-level syntax and a bit of morphology (inflections and such). Greenbaum includes chapters on phonology (the sounds of language) and morphology (word structure), and discourse (grammatical structure above the level of single sentences).
The material here is the most accurate you will find in a book directed at a general (non-linguistic) audience, and is essentially a condensed version of the material in *A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language*, of which Greenbaum was a co-author, and which remains the best one-volume reference grammar of English. It is a sad fact that most grammar books marketed to a general audience perpetuate factual inaccuracies about English grammar. Greenbaum gives you English the way it really works, without descending into the complexities of contemporary linguistic theory.
My one complaint about the book is not about its content but about its production quality. My copy, at least, is printed on cheap paper and the few graphics are not the sharpest. I expect more from a $45 book.

The authors use common-sense language to explain how to make vocabulary instruction meaningful--and why many commonly used techniques are ineffective. Of the essential elements of reading instruction, vocabulary has easily been the most neglected, despite its clear connection with reading comprehensioin. This book provides teachers with real, usable methods that have been proven effective.
Every teacher should read this book. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

(More customer reviews)Collins has prepared a wonderful text for students of Church history, medieval theology, the Vulgate Bible, liturgical texts, etc. all of which require an understanding of Ecclesiastical Latin.
This text is formatted in such a way that the reader learns the language is a systematic fashion. In other words, each unit builds on the previous unit. The thorough student will master each unit before moving on to the next.
Moreover, everything anyone could ever want to know about the language is present in this text. For instance, kinds of sentences, nouns, verbs, adjectives and all their declensions, pronunciations, irregular and deponent verbs, etc., all are clearly and carefully covered in this text. As the student of this text reads and learns, Collins periodically places drills and sections called "notes" to quiz the reader on what was just covered. The text demonstrates an emphasis on vocabulary as well, has an English-Latin and Latin-English vocabulary section as well as a nice index on words and subjects.
This is probably the best overall text on Ecclesiastical Latin available, I highly recommend it!

(More customer reviews)The "38 Stories" in the book, edited to form a progression in difficulty, are an excellent introduction to reading actual Latin authors. The most frustrating time in a Latin student's course of study may be this transition from memorizing grammatical forms to applying this knowledge in reading Latin. The stories are fairly short, so that students will not get bored by content, exposing them to many different styles of writing in a shorter period of time.
The passages chosen are also from famous authors' works, giving students a sense of satisfaction that they are now able to read the work of those authors about which they have heard much reference. Formatted like the more difficult Latin works, with notes and vocabulary facing the page, "38 Latin Stories" eases students into this style of study, better preparing them for reading works of Cicero, Vergil, Horace, and others. Moreover, this book does not need to be used in conjunction with Wheelock's Latin. Personally, I used this text after the study of grammar and before delving into Cicero's Catilinarian orations. Even just taking selected passages from the 38 stories is an excellent introduction to reading Latin through reinforcement of grammatical concepts.

(More customer reviews)Finally, a book full of useful and 'real' life examples. This book provides clear usage of the many verbs listed using an assortment of tenses and conjugations. Don't expect this book to teach you how to conjugate verbs like the `501 verbs' book but, it will show you how to use those 501 verbs under a variety of contexts.
I wouldn't recommend this book to a novice since the book seems to assume that you have knowledge of most of the tenses. In fact, I'd probably find the book a little confusing/frustrating if I were at the "Italian 101" level. But for intermediate students, especially those whom are writing essays, I think the book is a good addition to their Italian library references.

(More customer reviews)Well I'm am 90% finished with this book for my upper division linguistics course, and I honestly have to say it is probably one of the most dull books I have ever read. I don't think the subject is that boring, but the book certainly is repetitious. Some of the words that are "highlighted" are self explanatory to the point where you really do not need them to be christened darker to make the student notice them. Furthermore, it goes into too much detail. Do we really need two full pages at 8pt font talking about the high amplitude sucking technique? This can be explained in one-non wordy sentence. I think that the arguments between the various theorists are amusing, but it gets way out of hand the more you read. Why not just have a big list at the end of the book, rather than spreading it out over 250 pages? Some of the sentences are rather long as well, and this makes it more dull. Students aren't so dumb that we need 18 word sentences to explain something.
Also its highly overpriced- the book is worth about probably what they are paying the author, my guess is somewhere around $40.00. Not $120.00 My college requires around 87 students to buy this book per semester. However, my teachers lectures cover all the information in this book in a much more concise way. I suggest using something else.
Also it focuses so much on first language acquisition it becomes annoying to those that find FIRST language acquisition NOT what they are interested in. This book pretty much overlooks L2 and L3 acquisition, and only devotes one meager chapter to it! Not all of us care about babies cooing and if it means something culturally or cognitively.

The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language Review

(More customer reviews)This excellent descriptive grammar is currently the most comprehensive and up-to-date account of English grammar available. For someone familiar with an older generation of English grammars, even grammars written by linguists, this work represents a significant rethinking of they way English is described. It incorporates a large body of research that has occurred since the last major grammar of English, A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language by Quirk et al.
Unlike that earlier book, Huddleston and Pullum are more explicitly theoretical, but they are not wedded to any particular school of syntax and the writing is always accessible to the interested non-specialist. You don't need advanced training in linguistics to understand what the authors are saying. Their analysis explicitly challenges many older ideas about English grammar, and in almost every case they provide clearly reasoned arguments in favor of their position. For example, they argue that many words which have traditionally been understood as adverbs or subordinating conjunctions are better explained as prepositions.
The most detailed arguments, intended for specialists, are clearly set off in blue boxes, so you can avoid the minutiae unless you're interested.
I have noticed a handful of cases where the analysis or terminology seems arbitrary, but in these cases, the authors' decisions are internally consistent. There is only a problem if you are comparing this work to other grammars. For example, Huddleston and Pullum use the terms "determiner" and "determinative" in exactly the opposite way that Quirk et al. do, and do not give any reasons for their switch. Similarly, they treat the perfect as a secondary tense rather than an aspect (the approach taken in many earlier linguistically-based grammars) without explaining why one should prefer one analysis to another.
But such problems are minor in comparison to the vast insight that the work brings to the structure of English. Even if you think you have a good understanding of English grammar, this work will likely open your eyes.
I highly recommend this work if you need a thorough reference grammar and can afford the price. Indeed, if you plan to write a textbook on English, this work is required reading. If you are a student looking for a good introduction, I instead recommend A Student's Introduction to English Grammar by the same authors.

(More customer reviews)I used this coursebook during a TEFL course recently. I found Penny Ur's manual extremely disappointing. The chapters offer very little constructive information regarding the theory of language teaching. Ur's standard format is to list a few one line opinions on a subject and invite the reader to list the theories in order of usefulness or importance. Clearly the book is intended to facilitate group discussion and be used in conjunction with the teachers' manual which provides more concrete answers. However the manual itself does not provide much meaningful information regarding language teaching theory and when it came to applying the methods in my own teaching or writing papers on the subject, I frequently had to look at othe resources.

(More customer reviews)By the end of high school I had completed five years of Latin courses, including AP Latin, using both the Jenney's (probably now obsolete) and the Wheelock's texts. There was a gap of nearly four years between my last Latin class in high school and my first Latin course in college, and that gap was long enough that I forgot nearly everything I had previously learned. The intro college course that I took was using this textbook for the first time, and I myself, my classmates, and my instructor were all very pleased with it.
Despite the complaints of some other reviewers, the grammar-based approach employed by this text is here executed almost flawlessly. Fundamental vocabulary and grammatical pinciples are provided in seamless order and are explained thoroughly. The workbook, of course, is an essential companion to the text--the two are sold as a pair for a reason. As with any inflected, grammar-based natural language, repetition in reading explanations and completing drills and exercises is essential. And it cannot be repeated too often that Latin was at one time a spoken language, thus repetition is a necessity. Having used other texts, I can say without hesitation that this text best provides a strong foundation for reading Latin literature at the intermediate and advanced levels.

(More customer reviews)This book presents fundamental ways to examine the human relationship to language and thought. Hayakawa presents the building blocks of modern linguistic theories like NLP with precise and illuminating examinations of speech, human emotions, and "common sense."
This book is intruiging and at times disturbing. The study of propoganda is mind expanding and illistrative of the dark side of humanity. Think of it as a How-To manual to create a Orwellian 1984-like society.
I can't recommend this book more strongly. It will alter the way you think and relate to your own thoughts. Read this book.

It should be ideal for both linguists who want to learn about statistical language processing and those building language applications who want to learn about linguistics. This book isn't even published and it's now my most highly used reference book, joining gems such as Cormen, Leiserson and Rivest's algorithm book, Quirk et al.'s English Grammar, and Andrew Gelman's Bayesian statistics book (three excellent companions to this book, by the way).
The book is written more like a computer science or math book in that it starts absolutely from scratch, but moves quickly and assumes a sophisticated reader. The first one hundred or so pages provide background in probability, information theory and linguistics.
This book covers (almost) every current trend in NLP from a statistical perspective: syntactic tagging, sense disambiguation, parsing, information retrieval, lexical subcategorization, Hidden Markov Models, and probabilistic context-free grammars. It also covers machine translation and information retrieval in later chapters.
It covers all the statistical techniques used in NLP from Bayes' law through to maximum entropy modeling, clustering: nearest neighbors and decision trees, and much more.
What you won't find is information on applications to higher-level discourse and dialogue phenomena like pronoun resolution or speech act classification.
