HyperReality: Paradigm for the Third Millenium Review

HyperReality: Paradigm for the Third Millenium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In seeking to discover a future not yet known, the writings collected by Tiffin and Terashima offer a vivid and enthusiastic dream of a world where the line between what is real and what is artificial has no relevance or meaning.
Drawing from various disciplines and areas of study, a complex new society emerges throughout the varied essays. Nanotechnology, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality form the building blocks of a future of `HyperReality'. The nature of this future is carefully sketched out: everything from descriptions of technology and software, through to predictions about the extent of technological penetration into human life at an institutional, cultural and personal level.
The future that is laid out is not exactly a Utopia - although it is discussed with distinct enthusiasm - but rather, more of a realistic portrayal of human life in the Third Millennium, with some of the same old problems. At times the discussion can seem a little far-fetched, and dangers or concerns are not always addressed, but it must be remembered that this is a forward-looking piece, a set of predictive essays. Any prediction about human life 1,000 years from now is bound to have its critics and detractors. The strength of the work collected here is that clear connections with current technologies and understandings are drawn, enabling possible future trajectories to be explained clearly and believably.
The essays all hang together very well, drawing on each other and remaining cohesive as a whole: there has obviously been close collaboration around the concept of 'HyperReality'. If you can handle the occasional foray into academic and technical writing, the overall impact of the essays is one of quiet optimism.
An ideal read for anyone interested not just in technology, but also in science-fiction, the degree of `suspension of disbelief' that the reader has to make is small. The possibility of seemingly impossible technologies is made probable through Tiffin and Terashima's text "HyperReality." It is a future that I wish would happen sooner, so that I can actually experience it!

'HyperReality is a technological capability like nanotechnology, human cloning and artificial intelligence. Like them, it does not as yet exist in the sense of being clearly demonstrable and publicly available. Like them, it is maturing in laboratories where the question "if" has been replaced by the question "when?" and like them, the implications of its appearance as a basic infrastructure technology are profound and merit careful consideration.' - Nobuyoshi TerashimaWhat comes after the Internet? Imagine a world where it is difficult to tell if the person standing next to you is real or a virtual reality, and whether they have human intelligence or artificial intelligence; a world where people can appear to be anything they want to be. HyperReality makes this possible.HyperReality offers a window into the world of the future, an interface between the natural and artificial. Nobuyoshi Terashima led the team that developed the prototype for HyperReality at Japan's ATT laboratories. John Tiffin studied they way HyperReality would create a new communications paradigm. Together with a stellar list of contributors from around the globe who are engaged in researching different aspects of HyperReality, they offer the first account of this extraordinary technology and its implications. This fascinating book explores the defining features of HyperReality: what it is, how it works and how it could become to the information society what mass media was to the industrial society. It describes ongoing research into areas such as the design of virtual worlds and virtual humans, and the role of intelligent agents. It looks at applications and ways in which HyperReality may impact on fields such as translation, medicine, education, entertainment and leisure. What are its implications for lifestyles and work, for women and the elderly: Will we grow to prefer the virtual worlds we create to the physical world we adapt to?HyperReality at the beginning of the third millennium is like steam power at the beginning of the nineteenth century and radio at the start of the twentieth century, an idea that has been shown to work but has yet to be applied. This book is for anyone concerned about the future and the effects of technology on our lives.

The best in pedagogy meets music therapy in Michel's and Pinson's work.
In this fine and informative piece, Michel and Pinson relate their extensive knowledge and experience of how to approach the art of music therapy. Through background information on music therapy, professional guidelines, assessment and more, they portray this art as easy as a singing a lullaby. Upon reading this book you come to realize that they have unraveled techniques garnered from years of practical experience and research thought that define the ways in which music therapy is transmitted. I recommend and think this work to be beyond reproach. All of us in music studies, teaching and psychology can benefit from the techniques and ideas mapped out by Michel and Pinson. This book is a must read for anyone in education or therapy.

The Academic Library: Its Context, Its Purpose, and Its Operation Review

The Academic Library: Its Context, Its Purpose, and Its Operation

I am reading this book for a class, and am highly impressed.
It is an excellent guide to any LIS student interested in academic librarianship. Budd is very aware of key issues & challenges facing the field today and argues forcefully for the mission and purpose of academic libraries in Higher Education.
This book is MUCH superior to Stueart & Moran's book on
Library & Information Agency management; Budd's discussions of library management take a more critical, skeptical stance towards
business jargon & buzzwords, and embraces library values that are often markedly different from corporate values--a refreshing view in a field where so-called "Information Science" gets all the fame & attention while traditional Library Science gets marginalized.

In an astute examination of the content and function of academic libraries, the author presents a detailed analysis of the higher education as it affects libraries and information services. Rather than focusing on management issues, Budd discusses the organizational culture of universities and their libraries. Throughout the text, special attention is given to the structure of communication-both in print and electronically-and to the communities served by academic libraries. The book also includes a helpful analysis of political, social, and intellectual forces in higher education.

In that respect if succeeds admirably. Lists are arranged thematically for easy look-up. In short, essential.

If you have a background in either C++ or even Visual Basic and need to learn JAVA, this book is for you!
I have a background in both and needed to add JAVA to my skillset for work. I bought Ivor's Beginner JAVA from Wrox (usually my favorite publisher) but found the book full of errors and typos. To top it off all the examples were very math related and didn't give me a "real-world" sense for what JAVA could do for me.
This book is just the opposite. With great insight and tips for people with VB and C++ backgrounds, easy (and fun) reading, and in-depth coverage of the language, this book was the answer to my cries.
The Authors are very adept with the language and have excellent writing skills. Volume I game me what I needed to begin my path towards the interpreted dark side :), but Volume II is definately needed for Client-Server coding, and more advanced topics.
I would definately recommend this book to anyone with prior OOP experience (even a little) who need to learn the JAVA langugage.
I was also very impressed by the non-hype, and the lack of Microsoft bashing. Core JAVA 2 is a must read.

Colloquial Malay: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series) Review

Colloquial Malay: The Complete Course for Beginners (Colloquial Series)
Average Reviews:

This book and the 2 cassettes with it provide a good, solid beginner's course for native English speakers to learn Bahasa Malaysia. It is set up in a textbook-like way, and the cassettes are somewhat like a language lab, in the sense that they re-inforce the written work; the cassettes are not meant to teach on their own. I would reccomend this course for someone who is willing to sit down with a notebook and do some written exercises every day. If, on the other hand, the goal is to learn by listening and repeating (in the car, for instance) try "Survival Malay"; less comprehensive, but teaches chunks of useful language in the "listen and repeat twice" format.

XHTML In Plain English Review

This book is a must have for any serious tag jockey. When I first picked it up. I looked at it and thought to myself "what the heck kind of book is this". Then I figured it out. Actually it's two books for the price of one.
The first half is a very clear concise detail of every tag and attribute in XHTML and a reference of CSS. If all you need is to refresh your memory about a particular tag this is where you'll find your answers. Your not going to find a better reference anywhere.
The second half of the book consists of tutorials for XHTML and CSS in very clear easy to understand form.
At first I thought "They put this thing together backwards! The refence should be in the back"; but as I use the book as a reference I love having the reference in the front so I don't have to go clear through the book to find what I want. Very well done!
I would have gladly paid what this book cost for either of these two pieces; the fact that I got both in one book for such a meager sum is to me simply amazing.

Evaluating Change in English Language Teaching Review

Evaluating Change in English Language Teaching
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am currently teaching English in Japan and for my research am looking at recent curriculum revisions in the English language teaching in elementary schools in Japan. Judith was my graduate supervisor at Birmingham and recommended her upcoming book on how to set out the ideas for my dissertation. I have read the book now over the past two months and it gives a very detailed and concise description about how Education ministries and local education authorities, schools and teachers implement change and innovation in language teaching, undertake curriculum reform and introduce new ideas into the classroom. Sometimes curriculum change is positive or negative depending on how change is brought about and introduced by the education authorities in a particular country or education system, and how it is received by agents of change i.e teachers who may accept or reject change and innovation of change, The first chapter provides an intoduction of what educational change is, further chapters describe curriculum change, the different models of change that exist from top-down prescriptive models where change is forced on those below, to others where teachers identify a problem and through social-networking set about solving the problem and co-operating with educational authorities on realising their needs.
The book gives many case-study examples with reference citations of where both positive and negative change has been implemented in ESL classrooms around the world, and the final chapters deal with change involving MA TESL students, Chinese university lecturers of English and Japanese teachers of English. The book contains a fairly tthorough appendices, and 12 pages of references in the bibliography.
This book will be of interest to teacher-trainers teaching graduate students on TESL and EFL programs about introducing innovation and change in language classrooms. TESL and linguistics students researching curriculum innovation and change, and teachers who may be thinking of implementing reforms in their own classrooms will also find this book useful. Readers can go to chapters that are of interest to them and it makes a good reference material for graduate courses. Judith was recently the head of the English for International Studies unit at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

Village Life in Ancient Egypt: Laundry Lists and Love Songs Review

Village Life in Ancient Egypt: Laundry Lists and Love Songs
Average Reviews:

Andrea McDowell is Professor at the Seton Hall University School of Law, New Jersey, being specialized in legal history and property. One of her recent concerns is the American legal history. Let's remind some important data about her Egyptological career. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987 with the thesis: "Jurisdiction in the Workmen's Community of Deir el-Medina". A. McDowell has taught Egyptology at Leiden, Oxford and The John Hopkins Universities, being considered one of the leading specialists on Ancient Egyptian legal and social history.
The "Village Life in Ancient Egypt. Laundry Lists and Love Songs" is one of the best sets of translation concerning the community from Deir el-Medina, a village where lived in the workers of the royal necropolis from Thebes. A short "Introduction" place in time, and contexts the written sources translated in the present book. The title is a bit misleading, because the rendered texts cover, as far as possible, the whole range of the activities performed by the villagers. The author grouping them in 6 separate chapters: family and friends; daily life; religion; education, learning, and literature; law and work on the royal tomb. Every translation is preceding by a succinct explanation. The translated texts are rendered in accurate English. Perhaps, some textual notes placed after each translation was expected especially by the average reader. Anyhow, this handsome book stands for a treasure of sources with regard to the understanding of the everyday life of the people leaved at Deir el-Medina.
