Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal Review

This is a great, easy, relaxing way to keep up your already advanced Spanish. It might also be a good way to greatly improve your intermediate Spanish. Keep a dictionary and a notepad handy for those new vocabulary words. Or don't. After a little while of recording new words, I finally quit and just read for the pleasure of it, deciphering words by context. Sometimes I grabbed the English version to check a phrase. That worked well, too. In short, for use as a language builder and confidence builder, I highly recommend this book to you. However, if you're hoping to comprehend the complexities of grammar, there are just enough strange turns of phrase in this book that I would say this is not your first source for grammar lessons.

Side By Side: Spanish and English Grammar

I have about a dozen Spanish books including courses and grammars at various levels, and several audio type courses, and this is probably the most learning tool/book I have. The book's method of putting the English and Spanish side by side is very helpful, but the best thing is the explanation of all the tenses, which I don't always keep in my head. For example, many people aren't going to remember what the pluperfect past progressive tense is, or the imperfect subjunctive, and so on, and this book was great to remind me about those and what the corresponding Spanish forms are.
The book does this for all the different basic parts of speech: verbs, nouns, pronouns, prepositions, interjections, conjunctions, and so on. The tables and sections don't always align exactly on the facing pages, since there aren't always exact correspondences between the two languages, but I didn't mind that too much. For example, although technically English has the subjunctive tense, it's really almost a vestigial construction, but in Spanish there is a complete system of marking the subjunctive which is still very active, and the rules, although fairly consistent, can get pretty detailed. Spanish also has a second preterite tense that English doesn't have, the co-preterite or preterite anterior, as it's called in Spanish, and the two aren't interchangeable, so you need to know how they work and what the differences are.
So overall, an excellent book and probably the most helpful Spanish book I have, although it's not intended to be an exhaustive grammar. Some people might find the explanations a little technical, and I note one or two people here commented on that, but again, I didn't mind that too much. This book is a great value considering it really doesn't cost that much.
I only have one other book that is similar to this one, which is Spanish Verb Tenses, by Dorothy Devney Richmond. It is only on the verbal system and has less technical descriptions of the verbs than this book, which might be better for some people. The book also has a workbook section with exercises which some people might find helpful. It also includes appendices of verb tables of regular and irregular verbs; the preterite, future, and conditional conjugations; tables for the present and imperfect subjunctive moods; and a separate table for the modal auxiliary haber.
Finally, there is a Spanish to English and English to Spanish glossary with definitions of several hundred verbs, and a long list of verbs that take a preposition. This book is also very reasonably priced and I can recommend it too.

HyperReality: Paradigm for the Third Millenium Review

HyperReality: Paradigm for the Third Millenium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In seeking to discover a future not yet known, the writings collected by Tiffin and Terashima offer a vivid and enthusiastic dream of a world where the line between what is real and what is artificial has no relevance or meaning.
Drawing from various disciplines and areas of study, a complex new society emerges throughout the varied essays. Nanotechnology, Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality form the building blocks of a future of `HyperReality'. The nature of this future is carefully sketched out: everything from descriptions of technology and software, through to predictions about the extent of technological penetration into human life at an institutional, cultural and personal level.
The future that is laid out is not exactly a Utopia - although it is discussed with distinct enthusiasm - but rather, more of a realistic portrayal of human life in the Third Millennium, with some of the same old problems. At times the discussion can seem a little far-fetched, and dangers or concerns are not always addressed, but it must be remembered that this is a forward-looking piece, a set of predictive essays. Any prediction about human life 1,000 years from now is bound to have its critics and detractors. The strength of the work collected here is that clear connections with current technologies and understandings are drawn, enabling possible future trajectories to be explained clearly and believably.
The essays all hang together very well, drawing on each other and remaining cohesive as a whole: there has obviously been close collaboration around the concept of 'HyperReality'. If you can handle the occasional foray into academic and technical writing, the overall impact of the essays is one of quiet optimism.
An ideal read for anyone interested not just in technology, but also in science-fiction, the degree of `suspension of disbelief' that the reader has to make is small. The possibility of seemingly impossible technologies is made probable through Tiffin and Terashima's text "HyperReality." It is a future that I wish would happen sooner, so that I can actually experience it!

'HyperReality is a technological capability like nanotechnology, human cloning and artificial intelligence. Like them, it does not as yet exist in the sense of being clearly demonstrable and publicly available. Like them, it is maturing in laboratories where the question "if" has been replaced by the question "when?" and like them, the implications of its appearance as a basic infrastructure technology are profound and merit careful consideration.' - Nobuyoshi TerashimaWhat comes after the Internet? Imagine a world where it is difficult to tell if the person standing next to you is real or a virtual reality, and whether they have human intelligence or artificial intelligence; a world where people can appear to be anything they want to be. HyperReality makes this possible.HyperReality offers a window into the world of the future, an interface between the natural and artificial. Nobuyoshi Terashima led the team that developed the prototype for HyperReality at Japan's ATT laboratories. John Tiffin studied they way HyperReality would create a new communications paradigm. Together with a stellar list of contributors from around the globe who are engaged in researching different aspects of HyperReality, they offer the first account of this extraordinary technology and its implications. This fascinating book explores the defining features of HyperReality: what it is, how it works and how it could become to the information society what mass media was to the industrial society. It describes ongoing research into areas such as the design of virtual worlds and virtual humans, and the role of intelligent agents. It looks at applications and ways in which HyperReality may impact on fields such as translation, medicine, education, entertainment and leisure. What are its implications for lifestyles and work, for women and the elderly: Will we grow to prefer the virtual worlds we create to the physical world we adapt to?HyperReality at the beginning of the third millennium is like steam power at the beginning of the nineteenth century and radio at the start of the twentieth century, an idea that has been shown to work but has yet to be applied. This book is for anyone concerned about the future and the effects of technology on our lives.

Music Therapy In Principle And Practice Review

Music Therapy In Principle And Practice

The best in pedagogy meets music therapy in Michel's and Pinson's work.
In this fine and informative piece, Michel and Pinson relate their extensive knowledge and experience of how to approach the art of music therapy. Through background information on music therapy, professional guidelines, assessment and more, they portray this art as easy as a singing a lullaby. Upon reading this book you come to realize that they have unraveled techniques garnered from years of practical experience and research thought that define the ways in which music therapy is transmitted. I recommend and think this work to be beyond reproach. All of us in music studies, teaching and psychology can benefit from the techniques and ideas mapped out by Michel and Pinson. This book is a must read for anyone in education or therapy.

Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses Review

Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses

This book and the other Practice-Makes-Perfect workbook by Dorothy Richmond ("Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions") are the best Spanish books I've ever used. I just got back from 2 years in the Peace Corps in Honduras and I studied these books every day. They REALLY helped me learn more Spanish! In addition to the concise, easy-to-understand instruction sections, there's tons of exercises to do (with the correct answers in the back of the book) and as I did the exercises, I picked up all kinds of things that I'd been wondering how to say. I also liked the verb workbook a lot because it went way beyond the present tense, all the way to the subjunctive uses of "haber" and other more advanced things I really wanted to know. (This book is especially great if you already know some Spanish because you need some vocabulary to do the exercises, unless you don't mind looking up lots of words in the dictionary.) I highly recommend this book!

A workbook to help you master Spanish tenses

Some things just take a lot of practice to learn, and verb tenses are one of them! Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses goes beyond the scope of many other books that deal with verbs. Typical verb books often present little more than charts of conjugations with perhaps some mechanical exercises that do little to help you really master when and why a particular verb tense should be used.

Spanish Verb Tenses fills this void by offering clear, concise, and at times, humorous explanations that pinpoint why a certain tense works in a given situation. The hundreds of varied exercises offer the added plus of allowing for lots of practice.

The book is divided into three main parts: Part I deals exclusively with the present tense-including the conjugation of regular verbs, formation of questions, essential differences between ser and estar, use of the personal a, reflexive verbs, and the present progressive mood.Part II covers the other six tenses of the indicative mood: preterite, imperfect, future, conditional, present perfect, and past perfect.Part III presents the imperative and the subjunctive, aswell as the future perfect, conditional perfect, and the passive voice.

Two appendices complete the text-one lists verb conjugations, and the other highlights certain verbs and their corresponding prepositions. There are also two bilingual glossaries that define vocabulary introduced in the exercises.

As a companion to a basic text, as a review workbook, or as a reference source, Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses is an indispensable tool for all those who want to practice and perfect their use of Spanish verbs.

¡Buen viaje Level 1, Student Edition (Glencoe Spanish) Review

¡Buen viaje Level 1, Student Edition (Glencoe Spanish)

(More customer reviews)
I am a native speaker. I have a degree in linguistics. I have taught French, English and Spanish. I have been teaching Spanish in high school for the last 4 years. Unfortunately, I've had the "pleasure" of working with this book.
My biggest problem with this book is that the authors assume students will learn the way they did. They rely heavily on deductive learning, which is a critical thinking skill not present in the majority of students. Kids are presented with a lot of information and then, they are supposed to answer questions. How if they didn't even have an idea of what is going on? Many of the exercises don't have a clear purpose, as demonstrated by the following -and I quote from the Teacher's book- "When students are doing the activities, accept any answer that makes sense. The purpose is to have students use the new vocabulary, not to recall facts" This makes my students really anxious because they don't know what's expected from them. Gifted students find the exercises boring and unproductive. It isn't until the end of the chapter that vocabulary and grammar are explained. Why not explain and demonstrate from the beginning?
I also dislike how it devotes too much time on one subject (school- a total of 4 chapters!) but other topics of more relevance (like ordering food at a restaurant) have only one brief chapter cut in half and that is reintroduced later.
The book is organized more by grammatical topics rather than vocabulary. In my experience, the most effective way for students to learn and remember information is learning in a communicative approach.
The only salvageable part is the cultural readings. But paying $85 for a book that has just a few interesting cultural readings/activities is not worth it. I wish I could recommend books but I haven't had the chance to work with any others. I mostly supplement my classes with my own materials or some found on the internet.

The Academic Library: Its Context, Its Purpose, and Its Operation
Average Reviews:

I am reading this book for a class, and am highly impressed.
It is an excellent guide to any LIS student interested in academic librarianship. Budd is very aware of key issues & challenges facing the field today and argues forcefully for the mission and purpose of academic libraries in Higher Education.
This book is MUCH superior to Stueart & Moran's book on
Library & Information Agency management; Budd's discussions of library management take a more critical, skeptical stance towards
business jargon & buzzwords, and embraces library values that are often markedly different from corporate values--a refreshing view in a field where so-called "Information Science" gets all the fame & attention while traditional Library Science gets marginalized.

In an astute examination of the content and function of academic libraries, the author presents a detailed analysis of the higher education as it affects libraries and information services. Rather than focusing on management issues, Budd discusses the organizational culture of universities and their libraries. Throughout the text, special attention is given to the structure of communication-both in print and electronically-and to the communities served by academic libraries. The book also includes a helpful analysis of political, social, and intellectual forces in higher education.

Glencoe Spanish ¡Buen viaje Level 1, Student Edition (Spanish Edition) Review

Glencoe Spanish andiexcl;Buen viaje Level 1, Student Edition (Spanish Edition)

I've been teaching middle-school Spanish for 14 years and have had a lot of success with ¡Buen Viaje! level 1. Seventh-grade covers the first half of the book and 8th grade finishes the book. The students have Spanish 3 days a week for 50 minutes each class and at least 20% of each graduating class for the last 4 years have placed in Honors Spanish.
Unlike some of the other reviewers, I don't find the lack of English translation of unit vocabulary a drawback at all. At the beginning of every unit, all my students have to translate the vocabulary. I usually allow 1 class period to 1 1/2 class periods for translation of vocab; it may be that some teachers don't want to allot class time for that, but, the program comes with overheads so you can minimize class time devoted to vocab translation by showing the overhead and letting the kids copy down the translations. Doesn't take long.
We make extensive use of the cultural readings; we read them aloud and translate them in class. I like the way grammar is presented, although, I do make some changes. I really drill verbs because I want the children to be able to read. Quickly.
We also make extensive use of the writing exercises found in the text and the workbook. The audio CDs and accompanying DVD are also used frequently.
I find the logic of text arrangement, well, very logical. Once the children see the logic--you do have to point it out often--they start to study smarter.
Anyway, I'm very happy with the outcome for my students and give this text 5 stars.

...but again, as with many language learning products, the phonetic spelling of the words is lacking. As a Spanish teacher, I often have to "unteach" mispronunciation of words, and so I'm very wary of recommending products that either don't come with CD's or phonetic spelling alongside every word. That's the only con though.
This book is really a good one - it goes beyond the basic colors and numbers, and actually focuses on some verb conjugation, translation, and yet still has pictures to color or explain a lot of vocabulary words. Everything is QUITE well-done. I'm pleased to suggest this to many of my own students, and I really like that it truly is level 2 in a real sense, not just more nouns.

Triangulo: A Proposito, Manual para estudiante, Cuarta edicion, (Spanish Edition) Review

Triangulo: A Proposito, Manual para estudiante, Cuarta edicion, (Spanish Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a pretty good prep book for the AP Spanish Language & Composition Exam. After page ii, it contains no English, so it's a really great opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Spanish as they prepare for the exam. The book is divided into ten chapters, each with a different theme (the home, health, the environment, etc.). Each chapter includes relevant vocabulary words and idioms, as well as 20-25 pages of AP-style exercises. The activities are great practice for the exam, and they typically relate to the theme of the chapter.
The book is a great resource, but there are a few important details to note:
-This book is intended for use in a classroom environment. Answers, solutions, and scoring rubrics are not included with the book. Furthermore, the CD's with the audio exercises must be purchased separately.
-This book was published in 2006. Therefore, it does not take into account the most recent changes to the AP Exam. Paragraph completions, for example, appear in this book even though they no longer appear on the AP Exam. This isn't too much of a problem, though. Every activity in the current form of the exam is represented in this book.
-The vocabulary section at the beginning of each chapter is a bit frustrating to work with. Vocabulary words are only presented in Spanish, so students are forced to look them up in the small glossary at the back of the book. This is particularly inconvenient because there's not always enough space to write in the English translation next to the Spanish words. Furthermore, there are a few vocabulary words that don't actually appear in the glossary.
Overall, this is a solid prep book for the AP Spanish Language & Composition Exam. The AP-style activities are incredibly similar to those on the actual AP exam, so the book really prepares students for success. It's an excellent resource for students in an AP class that uses the book. It's tough to justify the purchase of both the book and the exorbitantly expensive CD's, however, so those studying for the exam independently are far better off purchasing another resource.

If you have a background in either C++ or even Visual Basic and need to learn JAVA, this book is for you!
I have a background in both and needed to add JAVA to my skillset for work. I bought Ivor's Beginner JAVA from Wrox (usually my favorite publisher) but found the book full of errors and typos. To top it off all the examples were very math related and didn't give me a "real-world" sense for what JAVA could do for me.
This book is just the opposite. With great insight and tips for people with VB and C++ backgrounds, easy (and fun) reading, and in-depth coverage of the language, this book was the answer to my cries.
The Authors are very adept with the language and have excellent writing skills. Volume I game me what I needed to begin my path towards the interpreted dark side :), but Volume II is definately needed for Client-Server coding, and more advanced topics.
I would definately recommend this book to anyone with prior OOP experience (even a little) who need to learn the JAVA langugage.
I was also very impressed by the non-hype, and the lack of Microsoft bashing. Core JAVA 2 is a must read.

They never teach you slang in those high school foreign language classes. At least they never did in mine. But of course, we all wanted to learn how to swear in the language we were learning. I became better acquainted with the intricacies of another language when Maria, a foreign exchange student from Colombia, and I became friends. I mispronounced something that caused her (1) face to turn tomato red, and (2) to break out in hysterical laughter. Although I knew I'd just committed some major faux pas, she would never tell me what I'd actually said. That alerted me to the fact that I'd better be careful what I say when I try to speak someone else's language.
A little book like Dirty Spanish is a great tool. Not only will it help you to not sound as if you've just wandered out of Spanish 101 in high school, you'll learn that harmless slang in Mexico might get you a fist in the nose in Spain. Divided into chapters such as Howdy Spanish, Friendly Spanish, Party Spanish, Body Spanish, Angry Spanish and Hungry Spanish (among others), the author also tells you which Spanish-speaking country uses the particular phrase. There's lots to learn in these 126 pages, and you'll laugh along the way.
Dirty Spanish is indispensable for any trip you're planning to a Spanish-speaking country, or if you just want to understand what Spanish-speaking employees are saying as they walk past. (I'd received a compliment and didn't even know it!)

My children are both studying Spanish, and I decided to help them get fluent in it by having the three of us speak it together. Having studied Spanish years ago, I was a bit rusty, and I've found Dietz's book a great ready reference on vocabulary relevant to the contents of the home. It covers everything you might find in the kitchen, dining room, living room, family room, master bedroom, bathroom, boy's and girl's rooms, nursery, bar, laundry, patio and yard. It also provides vocabulary for home emergencies, the metric system and general conversation, and a useful index at the end of the book acts like a mini dictionary of all the items covered in the book.
I highly recommend this book to put on your reference shelf alongside a Spanish-English dictionary and a book on verbs such as the excellent Spanish Verb Manual by Alfredo Gonzalez Hermoso.
