(More customer reviews)I, as a student, was utterly dissatisfied with the content from this product. Since STAR testing was around the corner, I wanted to prepare myself and benefit from test-taking strategies. When I flipped through the pages, I realized how much the material was irrelevant compared to the district tests that I take every now and then, throughout the school year. Apparently, it did not at all cover 9th grade material and did not set the bar high enough. However, I am sure it can match elementary to middle school standards. It is unbelievable and absurd how the publisher can actually dare to distribute this straightforward material. When I took the STAR test, I noticed 95% of the practice questions (given in the workbook) were not at all alike compared to the real deal. As a student who reviewed the workbook and took the real test, I urge you not to purchase this ridiculous book or any books from this publisher.

Master Skills Series: Reading Comprehension Grade 3 Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a good reader's comprehension book to use on my third grader. This book is very short (4 to 5 sentences) paragraphs followed by 3 questions. I was looking for something a little longer. The topics in the book are fairly kid friendly and if you are just looking for something for you child to practice on for test taking purposes, I guess it's okay. The vocabulary is very simple (more like 1st or maybe 2nd grade) so there is nothing that your 3rd grader won't understand. Graphics are good and colorful, although they are mostly just covering blank parts of the page and not adding to the stories they illistrate. Just didn't seem like a 3rd grade leve. I'm going to use it for my 2nd grader.

Wordly Wise 3000 Grade 3 Student Book - 2nd Edition Review

(More customer reviews)My child's Beestar online vocabulary program listed this book as a reference. We purchased it following the recommendation. What a fantastic result it brings. My child's reading level is at top of his class now... I believe this book has the ability to change a child's perspective on learning words. Not only is Wordly Wise well-designed and challenging, but it's also fun. It's an effective vocabulary learning system that I would recommend to anyone with school-age kids. My neighbor has a 15 years old daughter who used this book. She still remembers the words she learned from Wordly Wise when she was 8 years old. It's a treasure.

(More customer reviews)This is a pretty good prep book for the AP Spanish Language & Composition Exam. After page ii, it contains no English, so it's a really great opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Spanish as they prepare for the exam. The book is divided into ten chapters, each with a different theme (the home, health, the environment, etc.). Each chapter includes relevant vocabulary words and idioms, as well as 20-25 pages of AP-style exercises. The activities are great practice for the exam, and they typically relate to the theme of the chapter.
The book is a great resource, but there are a few important details to note:
-This book is intended for use in a classroom environment. Answers, solutions, and scoring rubrics are not included with the book. Furthermore, the CD's with the audio exercises must be purchased separately.
-This book was published in 2006. Therefore, it does not take into account the most recent changes to the AP Exam. Paragraph completions, for example, appear in this book even though they no longer appear on the AP Exam. This isn't too much of a problem, though. Every activity in the current form of the exam is represented in this book.
-The vocabulary section at the beginning of each chapter is a bit frustrating to work with. Vocabulary words are only presented in Spanish, so students are forced to look them up in the small glossary at the back of the book. This is particularly inconvenient because there's not always enough space to write in the English translation next to the Spanish words. Furthermore, there are a few vocabulary words that don't actually appear in the glossary.
Overall, this is a solid prep book for the AP Spanish Language & Composition Exam. The AP-style activities are incredibly similar to those on the actual AP exam, so the book really prepares students for success. It's an excellent resource for students in an AP class that uses the book. It's tough to justify the purchase of both the book and the exorbitantly expensive CD's, however, so those studying for the exam independently are far better off purchasing another resource.

Third Grade Reading Comprehension Success (Sylvan Workbooks) (Language Arts Workbooks) Review

(More customer reviews)My son is an above average reader, but his reading comprehension is a bit of a struggle for him, so I was looking for a reading comprehension workbook to help him improve these skills. When I saw that the Sylvan workbook was available through the Vine program, I immediately ordered it. The Iowa tests were looming at his school, and I wanted him to build his confidence in this area. When we got the workbook, he went right to work. Within a matter of hours, he completed most of the book, and therein lies the problem. If you have a child who has average or better reading comprehension skills, the material in this book will not be a challenge for him or her. The material that was covered in the book were mostly things that were covered in his second grade class, and did not seem all that grade appropriate. I was surprised to see that children were asked to draw pictures for book titles. This is something that he covered in first and second grade, and no where in his third grade curriculum is it even addressed any more. The same goes for looking at pictures and choosing one of four multiple choice questions as the answer. It just seemed really basic. I would imagine that a child who struggles with reading might find the book helpful, but if you are looking to improve on a skill where your child is already better than average, I would look somewhere else.
As with some of the other reviewers, I did not like that the answer key is next to the questions on the page. I know it is used as a means for self check, but a child can just as easily flip to the back of the book to look up the answers. The answers cover multiple pages of questions, so you have to flip back and forth to see the correct answers once you are past the first two pages anyway. I did not have the heart to cut the answer keys off the page in case they got lost, so I just folded the keys over so they could not be seen on the page where he was working. Little eyes like to wander, so I am not sure the placement of the answer key was all that well thought out by the publisher.
The pictures are engaging and the stories are interesting enough that your child will not be bored with the material. It just lacks the challenge and age appropriate materials that I had hoped to find in this product.
