Reading Comprehension Success (Skill Builders Series (New York, N.Y.).) Review

Reading Comprehension Success (Skill Builders Series (New York, N.Y.).)

The author provides the complete toolset essential for reading comprehension. For example, the author shows exactly what a "main idea" is, provides definitions and examples, provides hands-on practice and tests reader understanding, and then ties several related tool-skills together in a later review chapter with further integrated practice materials. This sensible approach was missing or lacking in every other book I read; the first grade reading comprehension books I browsed at the bookstore were more helpful than those books. I have been out of formal education for many years and I read several top-brand books trying to get solid help. None of those books were nearly as helpful as this one book. In fact, (Elizabeth L. Tesla) the author's series of books is a must for every personal reference book shelf- even appropriate for younger children. This one book answers all of the questions and solves all of the problems related to reading, but the author also points out correctly that a reader must practice in everyday situations by reading a variety of materials and applying the tools in this book. Reading is a lifelong enjoyment and acquired skill. Buy this book and then practice, practice, practice.

Informal Reading Inventory: Preprimer to Twelfth Grade, Sixth Edition Review

Informal Reading Inventory: Preprimer to Twelfth Grade, Sixth Edition

I have been using the Burns Roe inventories for the past seven years in my elementary classes and Reading Tutor program. I find that while some of the passages are good, others are very difficult to use. The vocabulary in some passages is very outdated (like the use of the terms "bookmobile," "fife," and "roof slates"). Also, there are many stories that present situations and topics very unknown to second language learners. I also do not like that the passages are excerpts from stories, with no apparent starting points or endings. In fact, I feel that I can only successfully use two or three of the passages for each level, since the others do not give me a true reflection of students' reading comprehension.
Another problem I have is with the word lists. There is a tremendous jump in word difficulty from Level 3 to Level 4. Most of my students can read Level 5 words more easily that those in level 4. To go from words like "yellow" and "welcome" to "ancient" and "government" is a bit much.
Overall, I think that the format of the inventory is good. I just think it is time to add new, up-to-date, and less confusing passages.

Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum (9th Edition) Review

Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum (9th Edition)
Average Reviews:

As a Middle and High School teacher with ESL students, and a professional developer, I have been on the look-out for texts that would deliver a practical approach and solid strategies for teaching content area literacy. The authors advocate the use of constructivist approaches to teaching as well as in the professional development of the teacher. The target audience is the pre-service teacher (grades 6-12).
I really liked how each chapter of the 9th edition opens with an overview and a map of the concepts. The figures in the books are great illustrations of the strategies and techniques, and one in particular was a particularly apt example of Guess What's in My Head (figure 7:10)that show how unproductive it is as a teaching technique. Each chapter begins with an activity that poses a set of questions that sets the stage for learning about the chapter content. The authors attempt to be thought-provoking but in chapter 6 I wonder if they and their editors were really paying attention. Here they try to show the complexity of reading by citing the adventurer David Livingstone's encounter in Africa with "preliterate natives" (p. 186) who ate a book to literally digest its contents. Its inclusion in this book makes me wonder who they think is teaching "diverse learners" in the school.
As a synoptic text, the writers try too hard to cover all the bases of content area teaching at the expense of some in-depth analysis of the effectiveness of the techniques and strategies they recommend. Many texts on teaching reading at upper K-12 levels tend to concentrate on comprehension techniques, which is fine for somewhat-proficient readers, but neglects the weaker readers and the ESL students in the heterogeneous classroom whose comprehension difficulties are compounded with de-coding challenges.
As an ESL teacher, I would have liked to know how all of these strategies for teaching in the content areas could be adapted to my students. Instead, there is a separate chapter on "Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners" who, as practicing ESL teachers know, do not cease to be "diverse" after they have been mainstreamed. Having tried some of these strategies with my students, I can say for sure that QARs is far too challenging for ESL novice and intermediate learners when they are asked to think beyond the text. To participate in classroom discussion they need scaffolding for the language functions and vocabulary. In my opinion, the weakest chapter of all was Assessing Students and Texts (Chapter 4). The authors have completely missed the basic point about rubrics: to make assessment more consistent. There are better books on assessment with rubrics than this chapter.

Content Area Reading remains the market-leading text in content literacy and maintains the authors' original objective—to offer an ambitious, coherent, and workable exploration of content literacy. The Ninth Edition comes at a perfect time when there is an increased focus on adolescent literacy. With the point of view that students learn with texts, not necessarily from them, respected authors Rich and Jo Anne Vacca have written this book to be an active learning tool, complete with real-world examples and research-based practices. Thoroughly updated and revised to incorporate topics that touch on contemporary issues such as content standards, assessment, diversity, struggling readers, the No Child Left Behind Legislation, Reading First, and Reading Next, the book continues to provide a framework that focuses on the ability to use reading, writing, speaking, and listening processes to learn subject matter across the curriculum. Accessible and comprehensible, this text takes students through the entire reading process using simple, jargon-free terminology. The methodology presented develops a foundation that can be applied across disciplines, meeting the needs of all students.A Letter to Readers from the AuthorsTo Our Readers: We published the first edition of Content Area Reading in 1981. Some of you may be wondering --with good reason-- why did we have to revise the same book nine times? Has education in general and content literacy in particular changed that much in nearly thirty years to warrant nine editions of the same book? While we have remained true to the original intent of the book throughout these years, our answer to these questions is an enthusiastic "Yes!" We have witnessed dramatic changes over the past three decades in the way we think about literacy, what it means to be literate, and the ways we put literacy to use to learn, enjoy, imagine, explore the world, and interact with others . Some of the revisions that we have made from the eighth to ninth edition alone reflect the rapidly changing landscape of content literacy specifically and education generally:The renewed and hotly political debate over the role of content knowledge (the "what" of teaching) and pedagogical knowledge ( the "how" of teaching);the development of highly qualified teachers;teaching, learning, and assessment in a standards-based curriculum;the role and responsibility of literacy coaches in today's schools;the crisis in adolescent literacy across ability levels;the meaning and importance of culturally responsive instruction and literacy strategies for learners who first language is other than English;the impact of assessment on instructional practices;the role of confidence, motivation, and engaged learning in literacy-related instructional practices;the ability to "work smart" in independent learning contexts;the meaning and application of "new literacies" in today's classrooms.Today, one of the hottest topics in education is adolescent literacy. Our book mainly emphasizes how adolescents use literacy to learn across the curriculum; how adolescents will approach reading with enthusiasm and confidence in their ability to make sense out of academic texts. While the focus of our book has always been on instructional strategies, we underscore in this edition the ways that content area teachers can actively engage older students in learning with all kinds of texts, whether printed or digital in nature. Perhaps somewhere in the heavens there is a Greek god of reading who breathes into human beings an intense interest in the act of reading. Perhaps not. The reality of reading school-related texts for many adolescents is simply this: Many of today's older students, regardless of ability level, would rather have root canal surgery than engage enthusiastically in academic reading tasks. Yet we believe that teachers are in a strategic position to make a difference in the way their students approach reading and learn with texts . The passion to use reading to learn requires more than supernatural or divine inspiration. Enthusiastic readers in today's classrooms are made, not born with a fervor for reading and learning. And this is where the content area teacher will make a decided difference in the literate lives of adolescents. We wish you the very best, Richard and Jo Anne Vacca

CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook is a superior book to use as a reference in the classroom. It supports all areas of reading in grades K-8. Also it has wonderful advice about ELL students. Not only does this book have information about teaching reading, but it has hands on teaching methods that are proven practices. Some of the larger areas of the book are word structure, sound/print connection, decoding, spelling, vocabulary development, comprehension, reading and responding, and differentiated instruction. CORE Teaching Reading Resourcebook greatly compliments Words Their Way, another must have book. One downfall about this book is the page numbering system, but as you work from the book it becomes less difficult.
My first book was given to me from the California Reading and Literature Project and I'm buying another copy for my son, who is also a teacher. I would recommend this book to any teacher interested in improving their knowledge of teaching reading. I often review my teaching strategies with this book before finalizing my lesson plans.

Speed Reading: Third Edition (Plume) Review

Speed Reading: Third Edition (Plume)

To begin, I think that it's important to note that Tony Buzan does not specialize in teaching Speed Reading. From what I can tell, he specializes in a technique he's coined called "Mind Mapping" which can be found in his other books: "Use Both Sides of Your Brain" and "Make the Most of Your Mind." I think that these two books are a far better use of Buzan's knowledge, as they represent areas in which he focuses the majority of his time to.
Basically, I think that this book is a decent introduction to speed reading, nothing special. You can aquire the same basic knowledge from any other speed reading books that are out there. Though the book seems to boast some sort of revolutionary approach to speed reading...don't be fooled, there is nothing revolutionary about this book. The most valuable thing about this book is that it points out the major problems that most readers have--and these problems are easily overcome, and you can improve your speed by fixing these problems:
1) Subvocalizing: mouthing words outloud or silently while you read
2) Regressing: constantly going back and re-reading material
3) Lack of concentration & interest
4) Unorganized Approach to reading: not having a set of concrete questions about the text before diving into it.
Of course, these are in no way innovative ideas in the field of speed reading.
It is very dissapointing that most of the book is dedicated to things other than speed reading, like how to take notes (Mind Mapping), vocabulary, and random passages about history/music/art..ect. Buzan 'beats around the bush' throughout the book, never really giving distinct instruction on how to reach these insane speeds he speaks of in the riviting introduction. This is not Buzan at his best..and there is certainly no "general education" being given here (not that you want one from Buzan anyway), despite claims to the contrary!

I needed this book for a literacy class. THere are many useful ideas for encouraging literacy, teaching phonics, and building word analysis skills amongst students in primary school. However, there is nothing terribly unique about this book. I've seen many of these ideas in other publications. The CD-rom that comes with the book is difficult to navigate. WHile the CD-rom has good print outs of games and phonics sheets, the templates were embedded in a mass of advertisment and product information.
I would reccomend this book to student-teachers/teachers with little or no experience in the classroom and with little or no knowledge of language acquisition and linguistics.

7 Keys to Comprehension: How to Help Your Kids Read It and Get It

I devoured this book!! As a parent and a teacher, I know that this book is valuable for both groups. If children have the benefit of knowing how to think while they read, there can be no stopping them. All of us who love to read may not even realize what we are doing during this process but something wonderful happens when we are engaged with a book: To name and model the "7 Keys" for children is so important for their futures as good readers.
If kids don't "see" what they are reading; (visualize) how can they possibly find meaning? Don't assume that these keys happen naturally all of the time. It is so crucial that we as parents and educators guide our kids through this wonderful discovery process in order to help them "get it" and love it!!
I strongly recommend this book for anyone who cares about literacy and for those helping to develop a generation of life-long readers. If you care about children loving reading: BUY THIS BOOK. If you care about children doing well in school: BUY THIS BOOK. If you care about children doing well in life: BUY THIS BOOK. If you care about children passing standardized tests: BUY THIS BOOK. If you care about children at all, BUY THIS BOOK.

In 1996, Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas presented Guided Reading, the most comprehensive guided reading resource ever published. Hailed for its practical, systematic approach, the book showed hundreds of thousands of teachers how to address the needs of the whole classroom as well as individual readers. Now, with the publication of Word Matters, Pinnell and Fountas offer K-3 teachers the same unparalleled support, this time focusing on phonics and spelling instruction. Word Matters presents essential information on designing and implementing a high-quality, systematic literacy program to help children learn about letters, sounds, and words. The central goal is to teach children to become "word solvers": readers who can take words apart while reading for meaning, and writers who can construct words while writing to communicate. Where similar books are narrow in focus, Word Matters presents the theoretical underpinnings and practical wherewithal of word study in three contexts: word study that includes systematically planned and applied experiences focusing on the elements of letters and words writing, including how children use phoneme-grapheme relationships, word patterns, and principles to develop spelling ability reading, including teaching children how to solve words with the use of phonics and visual-analysis skills as they read for meaning. Each topic is supported with a variety of practical tools: reproducible sheets for a word study system and for writing workshop; lists of spelling minilessons; and extensive word lists, including frequently used words, antonyms, synonyms, and more. Armed with these tools-and the tried-and-true wisdom of Gay Su Pinnell and Irene Fountas-teachers can help students develop not just the "essential skills," but also a joyful appreciation of their own literacy.

Breakthrough Rapid Reading Review

Breakthrough Rapid Reading
Average Reviews:

This is probably the best book that I've read on speed reading. In an earlier review, I suggested that Zorn's book, "Speed Reading," was the best. It is indeed a fine book. Kump's book, however, give a more realistic idea of the kind of work it takes to boost your reading speed. Other books give a smattering of exercises--often very good ones--without emphasizing the kind of practice that is necessary, or even that you won't necessarily be able to maintain high speeds across all types of reading material.
Kump uses familiar reading exercises, and variations on them. The lessons are brief, and each lesson contains short (10-15 minutes) exercises; at the end of each lesson, you are instructed to do a series of drills. Kump wants you to spend about a week on each series of drills, and to repeat them every day. They can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more a day, depending on how much time you are willing to spend. I've found most--but not all--drills useful. The ones that were not useful to me drilled on skills I already had (recognizing levels of specificity within paragraphs, for instance).
Here's an example of one particularly useful drill. Kump has you read for 2 minutes, as fast as you can with comprehension. Then you read the same material again, trying to read a little faster, and a little further, in the same amount of time. And again. You do this four times. A variation of this is to read for 1 minute, then a little faster for another minute, and then to "practice read" (i.e., move your eyes quickly across the words, without worrying about comprehension) twice the longest passage in the same amount of time. Then you practice read three times the original (that is, the longest of the first two 1-minute drills) in one minute.
One REALLY nice thing about this book is that Kump has you use your own reading material, your own books. Other books include selections for you to practice with, most of which are tedious, simplistic, or just too brief. Kump's exercises work, and you can read your own books while you practice.

Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children Review

Guided Reading: Good First Teaching for All Children

Fountas and SuPinnel have written a book that has all the answers to any questions I have ever needed regarding teaching reading with groups. I have been teaching for 5 years and have finally found a book that really gives me clear explanantions, ideas, etc. The biggest question any teacher (especially beginning teachers) I know has ever asked themselves (including myself) was: "WHAT ARE THE REST OF THE CHILDREN DOING, while one works with a guided reading group? I have heard many ideas BUT this book has the best and most organized answer ever. If you have the same question(s) then you have to get this book. The entire book is fantastic, as Ms. Giacobbe put it, in the foreword, "why didn't someone tell us this before?" I felt the best part of this awesome book was Chapter Five: Managing the Classroom. The "Work Board" idea is one I've seen before but never truly understood until I read this book. The authors clearly tell you how to make, organize, and use the work board. They even explain, in detail, each Literacy Activity: Browsing Boxes, ABC, Listening, Art, Writing, Reading Around the Room, Independent Reading, Poem Box, Buddy Reading, and much more. Chapter Thirteen had some great ideas for Literacy Activities, specifically the Letter and Word Activities. The ABC Center ideas were excellent. Reading this book makes you want to do it all! I can't wait until the Fall!

Among the many changes to sweep American literacy education has been a move toward whole class instruction. Nonetheless, children still bring to literacy a wide range of experiences and competencies. How, then, might teachers best support a literate community yet still meet the needs of individual readers? For Fountas and Pinnell, the answer lies in guided reading, which allows children to develop as individual readers within the context of a small group. Their new book is the richest, most comprehensive guided reading resource available today and the first systematic offering of instructional support for guided reading adherents. Guided Reading was written for K-3 classroom teachers, reading resource teachers, teacher educators, preservice teachers, researchers, administrators, and staff developers. Based on the authors' nine years of research and development, it explains how to create a balanced literacy program based on guided reading and supported by read aloud, shared reading, interactive writing, and other approaches. While there is an entire chapter devoted solely to the process by which children become literate, every chapter clearly presents the theoretical underpinnings of the practices it suggests. Also included are guidelines for: observation and assessmentdynamic grouping of readerscreating sets of leveled booksselecting and introducing booksteaching for strategiesclassroom management.Best of all, there are well over 2,500 leveled books in the Appendixes, along with many other reproducible resources that teachers will use for years to come. "Good first teaching is the foundation of education and the right of every child," assert the authors. With the publication of this book, educators themselves will find the foundation in reading skills instruction they so rightly deserve.

Third Grade Reading Comprehension Success (Sylvan Workbooks) (Language Arts Workbooks) Review

Third Grade Reading Comprehension Success (Sylvan Workbooks) (Language Arts Workbooks)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son is an above average reader, but his reading comprehension is a bit of a struggle for him, so I was looking for a reading comprehension workbook to help him improve these skills. When I saw that the Sylvan workbook was available through the Vine program, I immediately ordered it. The Iowa tests were looming at his school, and I wanted him to build his confidence in this area. When we got the workbook, he went right to work. Within a matter of hours, he completed most of the book, and therein lies the problem. If you have a child who has average or better reading comprehension skills, the material in this book will not be a challenge for him or her. The material that was covered in the book were mostly things that were covered in his second grade class, and did not seem all that grade appropriate. I was surprised to see that children were asked to draw pictures for book titles. This is something that he covered in first and second grade, and no where in his third grade curriculum is it even addressed any more. The same goes for looking at pictures and choosing one of four multiple choice questions as the answer. It just seemed really basic. I would imagine that a child who struggles with reading might find the book helpful, but if you are looking to improve on a skill where your child is already better than average, I would look somewhere else.
As with some of the other reviewers, I did not like that the answer key is next to the questions on the page. I know it is used as a means for self check, but a child can just as easily flip to the back of the book to look up the answers. The answers cover multiple pages of questions, so you have to flip back and forth to see the correct answers once you are past the first two pages anyway. I did not have the heart to cut the answer keys off the page in case they got lost, so I just folded the keys over so they could not be seen on the page where he was working. Little eyes like to wander, so I am not sure the placement of the answer key was all that well thought out by the publisher.
The pictures are engaging and the stories are interesting enough that your child will not be bored with the material. It just lacks the challenge and age appropriate materials that I had hoped to find in this product.
