Peak with Books provides wonderful guidance for introducing young children to literature. We have especially enjoyed the inclusion of songs, poems, and art. The book selections include timeless classics and new favorites. The step-by-step instructions are a great help to the new teacher or homeschooler. Highly recommended by Ruth Beechick and others, this well-rounded program is a great place to start with your preschool and kindergarten aged children!

Peak With Books shows how to use popular children's literature to build reading, writing, and cognitive skills in an inquiry-based environment.Instead of using a "skill and drill" approach, the authors employ conversations, questions, and, meaning-based activities to stimulate children's curiosity, confidence, and thirst for knowledge. The authors' balanced literacy program teaches strong reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. To develop those skills, each chapter's central storybook is accompanied by strategies that employ art, music, drama, finger rhymes, poetry, math and science activities.Graphics and children's presentations illustrate how research and discovery through fiction can enliven whole-class and individually directed projects.

Using Picture Storybooks to Teach Literary Devices: Recommended Books for Children and Young Adults Volume 3 (Using Picture Books to Teach) Review

Using Picture Storybooks to Teach Literary Devices: Recommended Books for Children and Young Adults Volume 3 (Using Picture Books to Teach)

This book is a wonderful tool for teachers and media specialists to use in identifying various titles that demonstrate literary devices, such as alliteration, inference, and imagery. Often one title is shown to demonstrate multiple devices, which can help professionals when working with a limited budget with which to purchase materials. Examples for 41 literary devices are given. The book is very well organized and cross-referenced to provide ease of use. Highly recommended!

The Fountas & Pinnell Leveled Book List, K-8, 2006-2008 Edition Review

The Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Book List, K-8, 2006-2008 Edition

The title should have been the first clue. This reference contains thousands of books that are already leveled by the companies who sell them in bundles of six. I was hoping that this resource would have more trade books written by authors whose intent is to engage and entertain children. As the levels increase, the number of trade books does too, but the majority of books are already leveled.
