Books That Build Character: A Guide to Teaching Your Child Moral Values Through Stories Review

Books That Build Character: A Guide to Teaching Your Child Moral Values Through Stories

The title of this resource sounds stuffier than it is. The authors' philosophy seems to be one of "less is more" -- making the case, in an interesting and literate foreword and five introductory chapters, that books can be useful and even important resources for trying to help your child figure out what makes life interesting. These books can help provide role models, teach empathy, and transport the reader to a different world or state of mind. The authors de-emphasize problem novels for young adults, which they feel teach self-acceptance rather than improvement and whose authors often sacrifice story for message, opting instead for the mythic, transportive style. I've read a lot of children's literature and still found a number of new and interesting titles here.
Books are divided into genre and then age group (4-8, 8-12, 12+). There is a good science fiction/fantasy section. Other chapters include: picture books; fables and fairy tales; myths, legends and folktales; sacred texts; books for holidays and holy days; historical fiction; contemporary fiction (post WWII); and biography.
The book list contains about 300 books and includes title, author, illustrator, publisher, year of publication and number of pages, as well as a one-page summary of the plot and brief discussion of issues or virtues covered in the selection. Also included: a list of the books, in the order they appear, sans commentary; a short chapter about the Book List; a list of twenty videos deemed worthwhile viewing; a notes section in case you want to delve deeper; and an index. The index is the weak link here. For example, on page 35, one sentence ends " ... just as most good parents, whatever their views on censorship, tend to buy their children books by A. A. Milne and Mark Twain rather than books by the Marquis de Sade." Then the Marquis de Sade is in the index (!) while useful subject terms, like 'loneliness' and 'friendship', are not. Later editions should include a thorough subject index.
A good companion book to Jim Trelease's The Read-Aloud Handbook, and a valuable resource for anyone mentoring children. The commentaries are thoughtful and well written.

Here is a family guide to classic novels, contemporary fiction, myths and legends, science fiction and fantasy, folktales, Bible stories, picture books, biographies, holiday stories, and many other books that celebrate virtues and values. There are more than 300 titles to choose from, each featuring a dramatic story and memorable characters who explore moral ground and the difference between what is right and what is wrong. These books will capture your child's imagination, and conscience as well-whether it is Beauty pondering her promise to Beast, mischievous Max in Where the Wild Things Are, the troubled boys of Lord of the Flies, generous Mr. Badger in The Wind in the Willows, or the courageous struggles of such real-life characters as Frederick Douglass and Anne Frank. With entries arranged by category and reading level, there is something here for all readers-from preschoolers to teenagers-whatever their tastes may be. Each entry features a complete plot summary and publisher information so that you can find the book with ease in your local library or bookstore. It's not always easy to teach a child the difference between right and wrong, but stories-whether they are based on fantasy or rooted in real life-can speak to children more eloquently than any list of dos or don'ts and can impart moral values as they nurture a child's imagination.

Barron's AP English Language and Composition Review

Barron's AP English Language and Composition

I am a parent with a high school junior taking the AP English Lang class...I do have a background in Rhetoric, just so you know where I'm coming from. This product is among the best. It has a "fair" amount of review material (some similar products have none) that can be used to supplement what is done in the classroom, and has an excellent selection of "test" material (literature from which the multiple choice questions come, and excellent essay sections as well). The problem with all of these AP Language review texts is that they all cover different concepts. It's good to use Barron's along with "5 Easy Steps to a 5" (or something like that) and/or Kaplan's. If I could only select one, I'd go with Barron's.

Five full-length practice exams with all questions answered and explained, plus an enlightening overview of the exam are just two of this manual's valuable features. New in this edition is discussion of the revised essay question, first appearing in this test in May of this year. The new essay question focuses on use of documentation and citation skills in essay writing. Test takers will also find detailed practice and review for answering the test's multiple-choice questions a complete guide to the important essay questions, and information on how essays are scored. Sample students' essays are presented with critiques pointing out each essay's strengths and weaknesses. Embedded C Review

Embedded C
Average Reviews:

I believe the real title of this book is more like "Introduction to embedded systems programming and software design with 8051 using C". Most of the C and C++ programmers will not find anything more about the C language they do not already know. The author claims that the target audience is desktop developers with C++ and Java programming. Probably this involves a portion of this programming crowd, who have not done any low level programming and are relying on existing libraries or have very little experience. One obvious advantage of the book is its clear style. The touch of many important topics and well selected examples from very small to a decent size projects is another plus. Selecting a well known microcontroller flavor (Intel 8051) is a plus, for the specific points that could be illustrated when one has to use such a cheap and not very powerful device for a project. The choice to demonstrate the examples with the Keil development environment makes it very convenient for the reader to follow the text. For the experienced embedded programmer most topics are pretty well known and they may find the style very easy and not so rich in new information. For example interrupts are not discussed until chapter 7 and the book has 4 more chapters. The users of bigger microcontrollers ,16 and 32 bit, may find that the code does not cover some of the more complex issues they have to face in their software designs. I am mostly refering to the developers creating code for Motorola 32 bit and the ARM family. Looking forward for the forthcoming book "Embedded Operating Systems" from the same author due for publication Jan, 2004.

Yookoso An Invitation to Contemporary Japanese, Third Edition Review

Yookoso An Invitation to Contemporary Japanese, Third Edition
Average Reviews:

Unfortunately, this is the required text for the Japanese classes at Fullerton College (CA). (Maybe a better text does not exist.)
It is impossible to look up anything. The dialog examples are very lacking. The examples are very narrow, staying with students talking to other students. I don't want to learn how to ask someone what their major is, I want to be able to talk in a normal situation.
Some of the phrases are not commonly used. The vocabulary doesn't even include some common words.
The most frustrating thing is how hard it is to find out how to say something you want to say--it is difficult to look up anything. This text is just organized poorly. It also needs to be much larger, with many more conversation examples. It needs better explanations of grammar usage.
I really liked "Learn Japanese" by John Young and Kimiko Nakajima-Okano, but volumes I, II and III do not seem to be in print anymore and are probably outdated now. It had many more conversation examples, which are helpful.

This is a book that teaches children about adjectives in the English language. It goes beyond the obvious in adjectives to cover the demonstrative and possessive adjectives in our language. A must have for foreign language teachers who wish to sneak in some English grammar in a cute, fun way, elementary school teachers, English teachers teaching the parts of speech, parents wanting to educate their children in a fun way!

IBM Rational Unified Process Reference and Certification Guide: Solution Designer (RUP) Review

IBM Rational Unified Process Reference and Certification Guide: Solution Designer (RUP)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was the only book I used to pass the IBM Certified Solution Developer exam. I did very well on it. (I did do a little research on the internet also.) Prior to reading this book, I had no practical experience with RUP other than knowing its theoretical construct.
The book covers all the areas that you need to know for the exam, although there were a couple of terms that weren't in this book at all. That really surprised me, since this is the official IBM Press book. And I read this book very carefully.
I haven't given this book a higher rating because of 1) its organization and 2) the way it is written. I would recommend reading the first couple of chapters and then the last chapters to understand how RUP works. Then move into the chapters on UMA and the other areas.
The writing often isn't very clear. You have to read everything several times to make sure you really understand what the authors are trying to say. Much of what they write is ambiguous, or at worst, nebulous. The chapters were either written by one of the two authors or co-written, and this results in a jumbled presentation. There are several typos, including in the sample tests, that might lead you to get some answers wrong.
However, if you want to be confident of passing the exam, read this book carefully. I felt the exam matched the level of difficulty of the sample tests in the book. However, in taking the actual exam, I began to wonder whether I had studied the right material at all. While taking the test, for quite a while I wondered whether I was being given the wrong test!
