I like this book. A lot. It's one of my favorites for learning and reviewing bite sized pieces of Spanish.
I agree with the reviewer who said that it should not be used alone. Actually, what I am finding after trying to learn Spanish for business for about a year, is that there is NO single resource that can be used alone.
I travel a lot on business to various Spanish speaking countries and this is the book that I take along most often. It deserves a place in your Spanish-learning library.
My experience has been that to learn Spanish on your own, you need books, tapes, dictionaries, videos, Spanish TV, newspapers, PLUS you have to practice, practice, practice with native speakers. Every type of resource you can think of. If you want to learn quickly, move to a Spanish speaking country for a year and devote the year to learning Spanish. Otherwise, it will require persistence and patience.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this, but this book turned out to be really fun to read! Part storytelling, part anthropology, part language lessons, the book introduces not just songs from six different tribal groups but a sense of how they see the world. The songs are translated, plus the pronounciations written out, and you can play the CD and read along with it - a great help if you want to try singing or drumming the music.

Here's an exciting new resource for anyone interested in African music and culture. Songs of West Africa by Dan Gorlin contains over 80 traditional African folk songs and chants in 6 languages along with extensive translations, annotations and performance notes. It may be the most complete collection of African songs ever published. The book highlights traditional songs from the Anlo-Ewe, Lobi, Ga-Adangbe, Egu, Foh, and related ethnic groups from Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria. There are sacred songs from Afa, Agzogbo, Gadzo, and Yewe traditions. Also major secular and historical music including Agbekor, Kinka, Atsia, Gahu, Takada, and more. Many of the songs are simple to learn, and can be easily taught to grade school students or adapted to other styles of music. But the scope of this book goes far beyond children's songs. Each song is explained in terms of cultural context, and translated in a way that helps you form your own interpretation of its meaning. You'll discover that singing the songs of Africa is a superb way to learn about her people, culture, and history -- and it's fun!The text includes music fundamentals, a pronunciation guide, and useful introductions to West African society, sensibility, and spirituality. Using the companion audio CD (included) you learn by singing along like young Africans do - or just listen and enjoy. The CD was studio-recorded especially for this book, so vocals and harmonies are easily heard over the supporting drums. With insightful perspectives and a wealth of information, this book is a must-have for students, teachers, and libraries.

Children's Literature in Action: A Librarian's Guide (Library and Information Science Text Series) Review

Children's Literature in Action: A Librarian's Guide (Library and Information Science Text Series)
Average Reviews:

This was a prescribed text in one of my graduate classes and is one of my favorite texts. Unlike many textbooks prescribed at graduate level, this book is written in an easily accessible manner, is not steeped in jargon, and makes for interesting reading. Many of the textbooks I have read at both undergraduate and graduate level have been dry and uninteresting, but this is one of the rare exceptions.
"Children's Literature in Action" is an excellent introductory guide to children's literature in several genres, i.e. picture books, traditional tales, poetry for children, contemporary realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and informational books. The book is well-organized into several chapters that are well-delineated:
Chapter One - An Introduction to Children and Their Literature
This chapter provides an overview on literacy themes as they pertain to children and Young Adults (YA)
Chapter Two - Picture Books
A clear definition of what constitutes picture books is provided, followed by a description of types of pictures books, evaluation criteria, major awards, literature in action, sharing, professional resources, and assignments in action
The following chapters follow a similar format to Chapter Two:
Chapter Three - Traditional Tales
Chapter Four - Poetry for Children
Chapter Five - Contemporary Realistic Fiction
Chapter Six - Historical Fiction
Chapter Seven - Fantasy
Chapter Eight - Informational Books
The list of resources is impressive and provides a valuable guide to not only librarians, but also teachers and parents. There is an index at the end of the book, as well as an extensive list of references and a bibliography.

Japanese Sentence Patterns for Effective Communication: A Self-Study Course and Reference Review

Japanese Sentence Patterns for Effective Communication: A Self-Study Course and Reference
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excelent book. Having gone through a course in elementary Japanese, I wanted a book to quickly review the basic grammar and speech patterns. This little book does a marvelous job. It explains all the main patterns concisely, yet sufficiently. The organization and clarity of the book are its main assets. There is a detailed index at the beginning of the book, containing key examples of the pattern. That way you can jump right to the page you need. At the end of the book there are handy appendices (with examples) on counters (some 25 of them), plus charts on adjective inflections and verb conjugations. All in alphabetical english order. Every pattern, or variation, is clearly explained with 3 examples. This is followed by 3 more examples for you to try. Then, the answers are given in smaller print. All examples are given in Japanese characters plus romaji transliteration. Every unit has a few new words of vocabulary, which are then used in the examples that follow. I admired the economy of this book. Nothing is superfluous. And yet, everything is sufficient, within the constraints of its size. It is published by Kodansha International, not Oxford University Press as the Amazon description says. Very few books on Japanese language instruction are suitable for self study. This one clearly is.

I purchased this book to review for our language school's ESL program. Though it is a useful tool in presenting all of the complexities of the English verb, as a practical tool for ESL students I cannot recommend it. It is needlessly complicated in its format. The book contains unusual and infrequent English verbs, such as "to cleave", "to yes" or "to be hemmed." It even provides two conjugations for "to hide," one meaning to conceal and one meaning to beat. However, this difference is noted only at the bottom of the page. These sorts of verbs permeate this book. It seems that English has plenty of high frequency verbs that make inclusion of so many bizarre and passive voice verbs unnecessary. This book bears little resemblance to its excellent cousins in the series: 501 French or Spanish verbs.

If you're learing Italian, even if you're not planning to go to Italy - you may benefit from watching Italian movies. You can learn slang from the movies, too, but having a book which some common expressions spelled out may help you, too. It will also help you if you're socializing with Italian crowd in your neighborhood. It will spice up your interaction and you can enjoy the pleasure of understanding what they're talking about when they use slang.
The previous reviewer pointed out that Italian language has been standardized - all that this means is that everyone is learning in school the same Italian. People from different regions at home may still use the dialect from their own region, so for example, a Calabrese will speak the standardized Italian, but he may also use Calabrese dialect.

Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish: A Creative and Proven Approach Review

Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish: A Creative and Proven Approach
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got decent grades in college Spanish; two "A-‘s" and a "B+." However, when I needed to actually speak Spanish, I was lost. I couldn't say much except "Mas cervezas, por favor (More beer, please)!"
"Madrial's Magic Key", along with the expensive (but quite worth it) Pimsleur tapes, have corrected the "mis-education" I was subjected to. The drills Ms. Madrigal presents are easy to remember and fun to do, not like those tedious translations and verb conjugations that college texts are so fond of. In two months, studying this book in my spare time, I retained more Spanish than I did in an entire academic year. And, for the first time, I can actually say that I understand Spanish.
I would supplement this book with a comprehensive book on Spanish grammar (I have the Barron's, but I suppose any would work) and a dictionary. I would definitely recommend "Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish" by Joseph Keenan for an in depth take on colloquial Spanish as well. Further, if you have the money, buy the "Pimsleur Comprehensive" series as well. Get vol.'s 1-3, even though they are pricey. If you are an audio/tactile learner like me, I guarantee that you will retain more Spanish idioms using the Pimsleur method than any other.

This book is THE BOOK to consult when it comes to Spanish idioms. It is the best among all others. The book is very well organized; alphabetically, guide words appear at the top of the page and for each word, there is an English translation and after that appear idioms that contain that word. There is an English translation for each idiom, and each idiom is used in a Spanish sentence, which is also then translated in English. At the end there is a list of common English idioms, with a Spanish equivalent and the page where it is found. It is a steal!

Teach Business English (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers)

I've read and bought many business English books but have never found one as useful as this one. Sylvie Donna specifically details many, many excellent in-class exercises and even provides the level targeted (elementary, intermediate, etc) AND how long each activity is expected to take. Each activity is meticulously described to make it very easy to follow. I work with people from a variety of industries and have found almost all of these exercises flexible enough to apply to my students.
The book also details things for the instructor to remember and be aware of when preparing for the course. One caveat: The book is designed for teachers who work at specific companies; those who teach in universities may not find it as useful, although I think many of the exercises can still be used in the university setting and the book is still worth buying.
Excellent work! I will definitely purchase another of Sylvie Donna's books.

Chinese (Mandarin) I Review

Chinese (Mandarin) I
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've gone through all 3 full sets of Pimsleur Mandarin Chinese. If you'd have asked me immediately after I'd finished them what I thought of the series, I'd have given it 5 stars without hesitation. However, after spending the past year trying to advance past what I've learned via the Pimsleur series, I've come across some reservations which prevent me from giving it a 5 star review anymore. While I do feel the Pimsleur method is incredibly useful and (despite its seeming simplicity) very innovative, I think their Mandarin Chinese series also suffers from simply being "plugged in" to the standard Pimsleur format, rather than receiving the customization that would help users truly understand the Chinese language, which has many quirks unique to it.
My reservations:
1) Pimsleur Chinese teaches the Beijing version of Mandarin, which is understandable considering it is the "official" Mandarin dialect according to the Chinese government, but the fact is that the vast majority of overseas Mandarin speakers do not speak Beijing Chinese and may give you puzzled looks when you use the phrases taught in this series. For example, in Beijing the word 'where' is said 'nar', while just about everywhere else (Taiwan, Singapore, and other parts of China) they say 'na-li'. Sure, 90% is probably the same, but that 10% that is different can be very confusing. Occasionally they give alternate ways of saying words, but more often they do not. Native Mandarin speakers may understand your Beijing usage and pronunciation, but you will definitely need to re-learn several key words in order to understand when they speak to you.
2) Classical Chinese, I believe, was basically mono-syballic, but Modern Chinese is heavily composed of compound words which can be broken down to their individual components as a mnemonic and as a way of better understanding the language. However, Pimsleur rarely does this. For example, I noticed they gave several words that began with dian (which, via other means of study, I learned means 'electronic'), such as dian nao (electronic + brain = computer) and dian hoa (electronic + speech = telephone), but I had to look elsewhere to understand the individual components. Pimsleur breaks down a compound word maybe a quarter of the time, but it should have been done EVERY time.
3) Although I still believe Pimsleur is a great introduction to the language, you ultimately only learn a VERY limited vocabulary from the entire 3 sets -- maybe a few hundred words -- not nearly enough to understand a TV show or movie (again, especially when you consider you are only learning how to say things in Beijing Mandarin).
Don't get me wrong, Pimsleur does an excellent job of getting the listener to memorize key words and phrases using good pronunciation (my Mandarin speaking friends were quite surprised by my "clear, classical accent"), but it is only a first step. To continue learning Mandarin, you definitely should learn Pinyin (i.e. the method used to translate Chinese characters into English/Romanized spellings -- it takes some time to learn as it is not very intuitive) in order to use a dictionary and other instruction books, and as a stepping stone to learning how to read & write Chinese characters (a massive undertaking in itself).

Village Life in Ancient Egypt: Laundry Lists and Love Songs

Andrea McDowell is Professor at the Seton Hall University School of Law, New Jersey, being specialized in legal history and property. One of her recent concerns is the American legal history. Let's remind some important data about her Egyptological career. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1987 with the thesis: "Jurisdiction in the Workmen's Community of Deir el-Medina". A. McDowell has taught Egyptology at Leiden, Oxford and The John Hopkins Universities, being considered one of the leading specialists on Ancient Egyptian legal and social history.
The "Village Life in Ancient Egypt. Laundry Lists and Love Songs" is one of the best sets of translation concerning the community from Deir el-Medina, a village where lived in the workers of the royal necropolis from Thebes. A short "Introduction" place in time, and contexts the written sources translated in the present book. The title is a bit misleading, because the rendered texts cover, as far as possible, the whole range of the activities performed by the villagers. The author grouping them in 6 separate chapters: family and friends; daily life; religion; education, learning, and literature; law and work on the royal tomb. Every translation is preceding by a succinct explanation. The translated texts are rendered in accurate English. Perhaps, some textual notes placed after each translation was expected especially by the average reader. Anyhow, this handsome book stands for a treasure of sources with regard to the understanding of the everyday life of the people leaved at Deir el-Medina.

The only portion this series misses is the written, but that's not what they were aiming for. I have lived in Shanghai and traveled to various parts of China. The voices on CD are very realistic and relaxed, helping the student to understand ordinary speakers - rather than the "standard" Beijing pronunciation. I urge students to use the CD's alot along with the instructions. I found the grammar explanations far superior to any other text I have seen out there- and through 2 years of formal training and 2 practical (in the street) I have not seen a more balanced approach to subject and grammar (Much better than Pimsleur). My wife is Chinese and agrees with the points I have made here. She said there was a definite improvement after I studied these CD's (as opposed to my classroom instruction - not the teacher's fault though, in case she reads this).
Hope this helps!

While I knew the importance of writers' workshop, morning message, mini-lessons and genre awareness, including these in my daily lesson plans was a monumental task. This resource gave me actual samples of all of these as well as suggestions for literature to use with the lessons. It is well planned, featuring activities for each month with detailed writing projects to accompany the lessons. Assessment and Treatment of Articulation and Phonological Disorders in Children: A Dual-Level Text with Resource Manual Review

Assessment and Treatment of Articulation and Phonological Disorders in Children: A Dual-Level Text with Resource Manual
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this text as an undergraduate, and later when teaching the Phonological and Articulation Disorders course as a TA, so I have gotten to know it well.
Strengths:
- Information on structural anomalies and their impact on articulation
- Emphasis on the difference between phonological and articulation disorders
- Description of several treatment approaches and which disorder to use them for
- Good appendices, especially the word lists and passages for screening/assessment
- Discussion of when to treat and when not to treat, as well as prognostic indicators
- Presentation of multiple perspectives on issues (although it's a headache for test-writing)
Weaknesses:
- Descriptions of phonological processes are unclear, and the examples sometimes don't fit
- Information from different chapters is sometimes contradictory (making the test-writing headache worse)
- Terrible formatting and visual accessibility of the information
- Terrible, AWFUL index
- Incomplete glossary--definitions found in the chapters are not always included in the glossary
- Poor goal-writing advice
- Some information is dated (example: it discusses the original Goldman-Fristoe, which was revised several years ago)
I would recommend this text with reservations.

The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language Review

The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This excellent descriptive grammar is currently the most comprehensive and up-to-date account of English grammar available. For someone familiar with an older generation of English grammars, even grammars written by linguists, this work represents a significant rethinking of they way English is described. It incorporates a large body of research that has occurred since the last major grammar of English, A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language by Quirk et al.
Unlike that earlier book, Huddleston and Pullum are more explicitly theoretical, but they are not wedded to any particular school of syntax and the writing is always accessible to the interested non-specialist. You don't need advanced training in linguistics to understand what the authors are saying. Their analysis explicitly challenges many older ideas about English grammar, and in almost every case they provide clearly reasoned arguments in favor of their position. For example, they argue that many words which have traditionally been understood as adverbs or subordinating conjunctions are better explained as prepositions.
The most detailed arguments, intended for specialists, are clearly set off in blue boxes, so you can avoid the minutiae unless you're interested.
I have noticed a handful of cases where the analysis or terminology seems arbitrary, but in these cases, the authors' decisions are internally consistent. There is only a problem if you are comparing this work to other grammars. For example, Huddleston and Pullum use the terms "determiner" and "determinative" in exactly the opposite way that Quirk et al. do, and do not give any reasons for their switch. Similarly, they treat the perfect as a secondary tense rather than an aspect (the approach taken in many earlier linguistically-based grammars) without explaining why one should prefer one analysis to another.
But such problems are minor in comparison to the vast insight that the work brings to the structure of English. Even if you think you have a good understanding of English grammar, this work will likely open your eyes.
I highly recommend this work if you need a thorough reference grammar and can afford the price. Indeed, if you plan to write a textbook on English, this work is required reading. If you are a student looking for a good introduction, I instead recommend A Student's Introduction to English Grammar by the same authors.

American Women Poets in the 21st Century: Where Lyric Meets Language (Wesleyan Poetry)

This book presents the work of 10 important contemporary poets: Rae Armantrout, Mei-mei Berssenbrugge, Lucie Brock-Broido, Jorie Graham, Barbara Guest, Lyn Hejinian, Brenda Hillman, Susan Howe, Ann Lauterbach, and Harryette Mullen.
Each is represented by a sample of work, a brief poetics statement, and a critic's essay which provides context to readers new to the work.
In her introductory essay co-editor Juliana Spahr says this collection aims to begin a dialogue between the two often falsely separated poetries of Language poetry and lyric. "The unevenness of these two terms, one a social grouping and the other a genre, remains a sign of some dissonance even as critics often pit Language and lyricism against each other with straw-man models," she writes.
Rae Armantrout writes that her own poetry involves an equal counterweight of assertion and doubt. "It's a Cheshire poetics, one that points two ways then vanishes in the blur of what is seen and what is seeing, what can be known and what it is to know." Hank Lazer writes that Armantrout "gives us a typically lyrical moment, but that moment inevitably is tied to some counterbalancing skepticism, so that the moment becomes ironized or self-conflicted."
Susan Howe says, "I think a lot of my work is about breaking free. Starting free and being captured and breaking free again and being captured again." Ming Qian Ma writes that Howe's poetry demonstrates a bent to contrive a method, or countermethod, to break free from the language trap through a `productive violence' highly informed rather than random."
Spahr says, "Reading these essays all together has shown me that, while there is a clear difference in intent between a poem written for investigating the self and one written for investigating language or community, it is more and more the case that the techniques used might be similar. In other words, form is no longer the clear marker of intention or meaning that it was 30 years ago."
