This book was used as a text book at a graduate level class in embedded design at University of St Thomas, Minnesota. I am also a professional embedded engineer (both hardware and software). What this book does the best is to provide a framework for embedded design. There are various examples in the text on the embedded design process via the requirements/specifications/hardware architecture/software architecture/component design/test process.
This has definitely impacted both my understand on a theoretical level as well as my design process at work.
Highly recommended!

The vast majority of existing computers are embedded in the myriad of intelligent devices and applications-not in desktop machines. We are witnessing the emergence of a new discipline with its own principles, constraints, and design processes.
Computers as Components is the first book to teach this new discipline. It unravels the complexity of these systems and the tools and methods necessary for designing them. Researchers, students, and savvy professionals, schooled in hardware or software, will value the integrated engineering design approach to this fast emerging field. * Demonstrates concepts and techniques using two powerful real-world processors as case studies throughout the book: the ARM processor and the SHARC DSP (digital signal processor).* Illustrates the major concepts of each chapter with real-world design examples such as software modems, telephone answering machines, and video accelerators.* Teaches the basics of UML (Unified Modeling Language) and applies it throughout the text to help you visualize stages in the design process.* Illustrates real-time operating systems using the POSIX real-time extensions and Linux.* Describes performance analysis and optimization of embedded software, including the effects of caches.* Includes two CD-ROMs with evaluation software: One contains the ARM Developer Suite; the other contains VisualDSP for the SHARC DSP family of processors.

I'm enrolled in a music class and this is the required book. I checked the price in the college bookstore it was Far more than I could afford. So looked here on Amazon and found it. The same book, Much lesser price and Just as good as a new book with two audio cd's. The condition was better than the seller stated it was, the seller even wrote me to see if I had received it yet. Which at the time I had not, but I was very impressed with her concern for her customers in seeing if the product was received. I will be ordering from here again, I always look here first instead of purchasing from the bookstore.

Medical Terminology: A Word-Building Approach (6th Edition) Review

Medical Terminology: A Word-Building Approach (6th Edition)

Every year I hear the same complaint from students: The flashcard printing utility in the accompanying CD is worthless: significant words from the vocabulary sections of the text have been omitted. There is only one explanation why this omission remains: the book's publishing team hasn't diligently overseen this product. As there are thousands of words to learn, one has to resort to hand-writing flashcards. An enormous waste of time, making this an ineffective text for learning medical terminology!

The sixth edition of Medical Terminology A Word Building Approachis organized by body systems and specialty areas. Its primary approach, is the word-building technique . Combining forms and word roots are integrated into each chapter of the text, according to body system or specialty area. Suffixes and prefixes are presented in Chapters 2 and 3 and are then reinforced throughout the text. To build a medical vocabulary, all one has to do is recall the word parts that have been learned and then link them with the new component parts presented in each chapter. It is much easier to learn component parts directly associated with a body system or specialty area, and this is the key to the time-proven approach of Medical Terminology A Word Building Approach.

Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches (Crossing Press Feminist Series) Review

Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches (Crossing Press Feminist Series)

No poems this time around, folks: prose that gets under your skin and into your head. The late, great Audre Lorde, known primarily for her poetry over the years, wrote what is one of the most compelling books on sociology, sexuality, racism and the nature of human character and existence in the last 20 years. Her charges are damning, but dashed with more than a spoonful of hope when appropriate, and it is impossible to walk away from this book unchanged.
No New Age-isms, no agendas...just common-sense reactions to everyday experiences told in a way that not only everyone can understand, but in a way everyone SHOULD understand.

So Long a Letter (African Writers) Review

So Long a Letter (African Writers)
Average Reviews:

I was introduced to this book by a friend who said that it changed the direction of her life. Indeed, I can see how anyone with an open mind would find a personal connection with Ramatoulaye's story. The comments about women's issues in the other reviews should not dissuade any man or woman from reading this book. Who has not suffered disappointment, betrayal, fear, and intense sadness? And who does not need to know that even through the worst that life throws at you, there is hope? Survival is not necessarily reserved for the fittest. Ramatoulaye stoicly accepts her husband's betrayal, but inside she suffers, and through that suffering and a subtle rendering of life's constant comedy she gains strength and independence. Again, any son, daughter, mother, father, wife, or husband will gain something valuable from So Long a Letter.

I have always been fascinated with ancient egypt, and have many books on the location, and its history. This is a perfect coffee table book, in fact, I have it on my coffee table always. The images are vivid, and some breathtaking. There are historical details about the land, its culture, myths, gods, etc. The book also has wonderful images of many of the artifacts found in tombs during excavations, as well as detailed accounts of some of the gods and goddesses and their lives and influences on society. Other topics covered are the tombs, artwork, language, architecture, women in egypt and their roles, etc. wonderful book.

Waiting for the Barbarians: A Novel Review

Waiting for the Barbarians: A Novel
Average Reviews:

From previous reviews on this page I'm convinced many readers did not read the same novel I did. As a South African I might have had priviledged access to a state of mind, but this novel soars above even such limitations. It is a masterpiece. It has haunted me with its power and subtlety for years. I first read it as a student, and have re-visited it twice since. Few books have affected me in quite the same way. Sometimes I open a chapter just to be inspired by the simplicity and elegance of the prose. Not a word wasted. To peel away the layers of meaning - civilization, barbarians, cruelty, love, impotence - seems unnecessary. I've always read it as a poem, thrilling at the powerful undertow of meaning.
