Real SAT II: Subject Tests Review

(More customer reviews)This book does what it says: it gives you one complete REAL SAT II test on every single subject EXCEPT Biology and Korean. Since many people take the Bio E/M test these days, this book is marred by the fact that it doesn't have a complete Bio E/M test (only half and not "REAL") and they seem to be easier than the actual test I took.
But otherwise, on all the other subjects, this book gives you a test that was actually used before. Plus, it gives you the scales for the particular tests, answers and difficulty of the question (no explanations though).
If you are buying this book for the language SAT II's with listening, you can get the tapes for free by sending the attached postcard to College Board. You should get it because the price you paid for the book includes the tapes and if you don't have the tapes you can't do the listening tests. Request beforehand since they take a few weeks to ship.
These book gives you the confirmation of whether you know the stuff or not after you finish your study program. From then on you can work on your weak spots or sit back and relax as you've done well on the practice (don't get too cocky though =) as the SAT 2 tests change slowly but gradually over time, and so the practice might be considerably different from the one you actually take).
Take this from someone who's got 800 on two SAT 2 tests, and 790, 770, 740, 730, and 700 on 5 others.
Oh and one more thing: before each test, there's a brief description with an outline of the topics tested and several sample questions of each question type for the specific subject. For the writing test, there is a sample topic and 6 essays with the 6 different scores on that topic (this topic is NOT the one on the REAL test--so you get 2 topics in the book for practice!)

(More customer reviews)As a general rule, I tend to stay away from textbooks like this when I teach upper-level English. I find that selections from student-focused anthologies don't always do what I want them to do, or the texts that I want to teach just aren't there.
Imagine my surprise, then, when I realised that this anthology includes Hamlet, The Metamorphosis (including the full version of the graphic novel by Kuiper), The Importance of Being Earnest, and Heart of Darkness. It also has a terrific collection of essays, from Achebe's classic "An Image of Africa" to Wainaina's "How to Write About Africa." It also has a handful of Seamus Heaney poems, a favourite of mine to teach at the upper level.
Your mileage may vary, of course, but I'm delighted by the wide range of texts that *I* actually would use in a class, and the price is actually reasonable considering the content. It's also hardcover, which means it'll last a bit longer banging around a student's backpack.

It's structured in a way that makes it easy to review a certain era of history and focuses on the key components that are then tied in to general themes. The book really allowed me to link all the events and concepts together that I learned in class. I found this review book to be the most helpful because it didn't read like a textbook. The wording was clear and nothing was dragged out for so long that I lost interest.
At the end of each section there are example multiple choice and essay questions that I felt were comparable to the ones on the actual AP Test. They allowed me to check my knowledge on a certain section of history and to see whether I needed to review it more or not. In the back of the book there are answers to the questions that provide thorough explanations so not only do you know the right answer, you know WHY it is the right answer.
Another thing that is unique about this book is that it has TWO practice AP Tests at the end so you can check your progress. If you do well on these practice tests then you are definitely prepared for the real AP Test.
Overall this was a great review book and I benefited from it a lot.

Reading Comprehension Success (Skill Builders Series (New York, N.Y.).) Review

For example, the author shows exactly what a "main idea" is, provides definitions and examples, provides hands-on practice and tests reader understanding, and then ties several related tool-skills together in a later review chapter with further integrated practice materials. This sensible approach was missing or lacking in every other book I read; the first grade reading comprehension books I browsed at the bookstore were more helpful than those books. I have been out of formal education for many years and I read several top-brand books trying to get solid help. None of those books were nearly as helpful as this one book. In fact, (Elizabeth L. Tesla) the author's series of books is a must for every personal reference book shelf- even appropriate for younger children. This one book answers all of the questions and solves all of the problems related to reading, but the author also points out correctly that a reader must practice in everyday situations by reading a variety of materials and applying the tools in this book. Reading is a lifelong enjoyment and acquired skill. Buy this book and then practice, practice, practice.

I had to spend cosiderable time on my own researching the information needed. It would have been helpful if some of this was included in the guide. There are only a few questions (about 60) per test and there are zero explanations for the answers - It doesn't even begin to cover all of the contents that may be asked on the test - REA does a much better job - but still tons missing in the REA series! I had already purchased Kaplan's new GRE Premier and ETS The official Guide to the GRE Revised General Test. ETS gives the right picture about how the test will be like. I couldn't find questions of high difficulty level in any book, but ETS Guide. Since there are just two practice tests in the ETS, you obviously need to practice a lot of questions in order to be well prepared.
Kaplan's approach to the Verbal Section for the New GRE is the best. You should combine it with Kaplan New GRE Premier which gives you 10 practice sets in their CD and two practice tests inside the book for verbal section though New GRE Premier doesn't have a good Maths section)- This book- Kaplan Verbal Workbook, has many questions which are very much close to the ones that I found in ETS; that means Kaplan meets the standards of real exam. When I saw the sample question for the verbal part on the ETS website, I found that comprehension questions are a bit more difficult now. Kaplan Verbal Workbook has come with questions that one might expect in the real GRE Exam and it gives a good practice. Although there are not enough books in the market for the New GRE exam (Barron's, kaplan and ETS are the only reliable sources), I believe this book will be enough. The number of practice tests are quite a lot! And that's what I wanted. Usually GRE books are huge and are filled with too many general explanations with the overview of the exam. We obviously know what the exam is and Verbal section is more about practice. SO, I just wanted to practice questions and this books wil really help me. I recommend this book to anyone who is preparing for the New GRE exam with a focus on Verbal section.
One another great thing about this book is how they deal with the vocabulary part. We all know that it's not possible to mug up the entire world list. And I am not a BIG FAn of learning the vocab by the WORD ROOT! That never helped me. Here, Kaplan Verbal Workbook has grouped words of similar meaning together. For example: the word chicancery means deception by craft, so all those words which mean the same are grouped under chicancery. Even I tried this strategy when I began preparing for GRE and one has to spend a lot of time in doing that. So the book has made that job easy. This will really avoid any confusion between words which have similar meaning.
My exam is on AUgust 2, 2011. I will write more after I experience the real exam :)

TOEFL iBT with CD-ROM (Kaplan TOEFL IBT (w/CD)) Review

(More customer reviews)This book was an excellent guide in teaching how to master in the exam. When I went to take the exam, I had no surprises at all. Instead, I was ready for any kind of questions, ideas, tricks, and most importantly; very comfortable with the layout of the exam software. The book's accompanying CD has Complete FULL sample exams with their model answer key (including answers to the Oral Section, as well as the Written Section).
For those who do not have much time to study for their TOEFL exam, please do not worry. In less than 10 days, I was able to finish the whole book with reading periods of 3 to 4 hours per day. The book has very simple to understand English language; yet it presents a strong structure in their flow of sentences.
Another main advantage of the book is that it is divided to 8 chapters; each chapter introducing various questions in different theme: Technology, History, Nature...etc. Studying the first four chapters allows you to be more than ready for the exam as they introduce all the question types. The latter four chapters repeat the same question types but in different themes - which really broadens your knowledge to different words that you may expect on the exam.
I still did not get my TOEFL score yet, but I am more than certain that if it would be disappointing, it would be for some reason other than this book. You will not regret buying this book.

but it doesn't really do much on the speaking
or the writing section. It just have the whole list
of writing questions and samples so I didn't know
how to prepare. For reading and listening section,
it has CD and gives you some practice tests, which I liked.
It has all the answers and explanations, but the explanation
part was kind of repeating the answer, so it didn't help me
that much.
I think this is just good book for
another book to prepare for Toefl, though.

(More customer reviews)This is a pretty good prep book for the AP Spanish Language & Composition Exam. After page ii, it contains no English, so it's a really great opportunity for students to immerse themselves in Spanish as they prepare for the exam. The book is divided into ten chapters, each with a different theme (the home, health, the environment, etc.). Each chapter includes relevant vocabulary words and idioms, as well as 20-25 pages of AP-style exercises. The activities are great practice for the exam, and they typically relate to the theme of the chapter.
The book is a great resource, but there are a few important details to note:
-This book is intended for use in a classroom environment. Answers, solutions, and scoring rubrics are not included with the book. Furthermore, the CD's with the audio exercises must be purchased separately.
-This book was published in 2006. Therefore, it does not take into account the most recent changes to the AP Exam. Paragraph completions, for example, appear in this book even though they no longer appear on the AP Exam. This isn't too much of a problem, though. Every activity in the current form of the exam is represented in this book.
-The vocabulary section at the beginning of each chapter is a bit frustrating to work with. Vocabulary words are only presented in Spanish, so students are forced to look them up in the small glossary at the back of the book. This is particularly inconvenient because there's not always enough space to write in the English translation next to the Spanish words. Furthermore, there are a few vocabulary words that don't actually appear in the glossary.
Overall, this is a solid prep book for the AP Spanish Language & Composition Exam. The AP-style activities are incredibly similar to those on the actual AP exam, so the book really prepares students for success. It's an excellent resource for students in an AP class that uses the book. It's tough to justify the purchase of both the book and the exorbitantly expensive CD's, however, so those studying for the exam independently are far better off purchasing another resource.

As an AP Literature teacher, this book is the perfect aid in preparing for the last few weeks of class before the exam. The author provides an analytical approach to refining essay writing, an outline for extracting the most important parts of literary works, and strategies for close reading on the exam. The author condenses a year's course by emphasizing only the most important content on the exam and providing 'test tips' to practice important skills for taking the writing and multiple choice sections of the exam.
For the student studying on her own, the author provides definitions of key elements of literature, summaries of novels and plays that appear frequently on the exam, and the link to REA's free practice exam. This book is completely instructional. It makes the AP Literature exam accessible to anyone willing to work on their approaches to reading and writing.

The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing Review

(More customer reviews)I first encountered "Nuts and Bolts" several years ago, when it was just a web-site. Back then, Yahoo! gave it one of their "cool sites" awards (complete with cute little sunglasses.) It became such a hit on the web, Hackett decided to give Professor Harvey a publishing contract.
Its great that they did, because the other college writing handbooks are either deadly dull or sprouting whiskers. Nuts and Bolts is neither dry nor bewhiskered -- it is hip, handy, and highly literate. This new book could (and should) evict Strunk and White, Turabian, Chicago Style Book, and all the other has-beens and never-weres as the one book every college student (yes, including science majors) should carry in their book bag. (Dissertation-writers may still need Chicago for their fine brush-work, but everyone else will find this jack-of-all-topics addresses most high-school and college needs.)
What's so great about this book? Essentially, it provides one-stop shopping for the essentials of good college term-paper writing -- usually dispensed in travel-sized doses of only three or four pages.
Nuts and Bolts presumes little, but teaches much. It rides no high horses, grinds no axes, curries no favors. Yet it is both idiot- and pedant -proof. Never written an essay before, but want to know what one is? Nuts and Bolts will tell you, without making you feel stupid for having asked. (Enlightening but non-overwhelming flashback to Montaigne included). Want to know what good sentences look like? (hint: active verbs) How to cite a "blog" in an essay? (take that, Strunk and White!) "Nuts and Bolts" does all this and (much) more while always remembering that brevity is the soul of pedagogy.
Finally, though it crisply marches student essays from the first head-scratch to the last push of the "print" button, its elegant writing and efficient layout make Nuts and Bolts ideal for sustained soaks or surgical strikes as needs dictate. Perfect example: Nuts and Bolts provides side-by-side comparisons of how each of the three major citation-systems expect students to format books, articles, websites (etc.) in their bibliographies and footnotes. A veritable god-send for the student triple-majoring in English Lit, Psychology, and Bio!
This book is written so clearly, and presumes so little background on the part of its reader (Professor Harvey has obviously studied the average scantily-trained college student in its native habitat) that you almost don't realize how supremely intelligent it is. Though it will probably mostly be assigned for remedial purposes, the book is so engagingly written it will inspire even very good writers -- teachers and professors included -- to carry it around in their own soft-sider brief cases. Adios, Strunk and White. Hello, Nuts and Bolts.

TOEIC Official Test-Preparation Guide: Test of English for International Communication with CD (Audio) Review

(More customer reviews)Although this book does not provide you with a large number of helpful strategies or tips for understanding the TOEIC test (unless becoming more familiar with late-1970s tacky fashion styles is part of the TOEIC--check out the photos), it is the most important book to have for your TOEIC test preparation journey. This guide, prepared by ETS, is the only one that can give you practice with "real" TOEIC material. Test-preparation guides prepared by other companies try to approximate ETS' style, but they can never match the exact difficulty level of an actual ETS test. In addition, for (amount), TOEIC Official Test-Preparation Guide includes an ample number of practice exercises: There are two mini-tests, two complete tests, and practice questions for each of the seven sections. The authors include explanations for all of the answers too, which is always helpful. Working through all of this material should give you a decent understanding of and preparation for the TOEIC test. The major drawback of TOEIC Official Test Preparation Guide, as stated above, is that it doesn't really help you understand how the TOEIC is constructed (i.e. which grammar points are tested in Parts 5 and 6, what types of questions are most frequently asked in the listening section, etc.). However, since most of the material on the TOEIC is assessing your genuine level of English fluency, "tricks" such as this probably won't help you in the long run. If you're only going to purchase one book to prepare yourself for the TOEIC test, it should probably be this one.
