(More customer reviews)Word Smart gives one of the best selections of need-to-know words I have ever seen. It lists over 800 every-day-useful words, while avoiding the temptation of adding some long, snooty-sounding words for the sake of intellectual arrogance. These are words that most college students should know. If you can master these in high school, you will be on the way to a rock solid vocabulary.
The format of the book is straight forward. After a very helpful chapter on tips for learning new vocabulary, the set of words is introduced in alphabetical order. Every ten words or so ends in a quick quiz. This allows you to test what you have learned; you can also start with the quiz to see what words you can skip over. The concluding chapters contain a lengthy final exam, the SAT and GRE hit parade (words you should have mastered well before taking these standardized tests), word roots, common usage errors, abbreviations, and some lists for the arts, science, finance, and foreign words.
This is a great book for anyone who would like to beef up on their vocabulary, or for those who would just like a good review to make sure they are not using some words wrongly.

Students of the English language will appreciate the exhaustive
delineation of the roots of words and word families.
In the area of city planning alone, the author provides
comparable Greek and Latin words alongside the standard
English. For instance, urbs and urbis means city.
Porta or portae means city gate. Domus or domi means house.
The work methodically reviews language families, the workings
of Greek and Latin, prefixes, government vocabulary and
vocabulary of the sciences and social sciences.
There are classic utilizations of the Latin in English.
For instance, "in principio" means in the beginning.
"Status quo" means the state in which something exists.
"Ad Infinitum" refers to infinity and "finis" is the end.
This work could be helpful to students studying Latin or
Greek because the author explains the foreign language
relationship to English. The work could be very helpful for
anyone desiring to improve his/her vocabulary. There are
numerous exercises throughout the text. These are designed
to give students ample practice with word utilization and
application in a number of important contexts. This version
has an extensive constituency or strategic audience.
i.e. English majors, foreign language experts, writers,
editors and newspeople and a variety of scientific professional
people. The work could be useful during formal study for the

(More customer reviews)Hard for me to write a short review of this book since I've written a book about Ashton-Warner's contributions to teaching young children.
The point is, Ashton-Warner was a careful observer of the young Maori children she taught. She knew that what she had been trained to do in a college teacher-training program wasn't working, so she really looked to see what the children cared about, and invented ways to teach them based upon their deep interests and respecting their culture, different from her own. She, a left-handed artist, was different from the mainstream, and wanted to be appreciated...and she carried this and other knowledge from her personal life into her teaching. Ashton-Warner wasn't a woman of perfection, but she made a contribution that lasts...This book has changed the lives of many, many teachers -- I know because they have told me.

The World of Words: Vocabulary for College Students Review

(More customer reviews)I use Margaret Richek's book for tutoring purposes, both in one-on-one and group settings, for basic vocabulary and language skills. The primary purpose of this text is to strengthen the vocabulary of the learner. It is designed with the adult learner in mind, tailoring the vocabulary and language exercises to be of use to those who are continuing their education toward GED, community college and general literacy skills.
Each chapter of the book has three key elements - word mastery, learning strategies, and interesting features of words. In the mastering of words, each chapter presents the tried-and-true vocabulary list, to be used again and again in the course of the chapter (and repeated occasionally throughout later chapters). Several sentences are used to put the words in context. It is not simply a dull list of definitions - words are connected, and related words given.
Learning strategies are introduced in each chapter as well. These include use of a dictionary (how can you look up a word when you don't know how to spell it?), using context clues to figure out the meaning of a word, analysing word elements by parts (prefixes, suffixes, etc.), and learning words in settings such as forms, newspapers, and other familiar settings.
The special interest sections include articles that highlight the vocabulary (articles include the history of Ben & Jerry's, stories of how cars get named, biographical stories of famous people like Jackie Robinson, and more), as well as brief histories of words and word categories.
Each chapter has a variety of exercises - mix and match, word association, fill in the blank, analyzing paragraphs, discussion questions for the reading passages, and more.
The one thing I would wish for this text would be a general glossary or dictionary at the end of the book, for students to use with greater ease in looking up the meanings of words. This could be organised in the manner of a dictionary, to be useful for the dictionary use exercises, too. Other than this, `The World of Words' serves as a very useful guide in language arts, reading and writing classes, as well as for individual tutoring for those looking to enhance their basic literacy skills.

1100 Words You Need to Know Review

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased the 2000 edition to use with my college-bound students who need more vocabulary work, as, for many of them, English is not their first language. The presentation and layout are excellent, the extracts are interesting and informative, and the "Panorama" section is relevant. I am concerned, however, about the errors in the answer section and the occasional typo. I have found a total of 21 errors - surely too high for a text which aims to "improve college grades" and to help you "score high on the SAT1". Check the answers carefully - the errors are pretty obvious and so should have been spotted before publication. These spoil an otherwise excellent book which should have had 5 stars.

The book has 100 units and every unit explains a unique phenomenon of the English language. The Index encounters about three and a half thousand English words which for me is quite a lot. You will find six units on idioms, a unit on slang and much more. The book is for upper-intermediate and advanced students. If you are just a beginner, look for books with the same title for beginners or intermediate students.

English Collocations in Use: Advanced Review

(More customer reviews)Nice book and it can be very valuable, but when instructing with collocations I tend to select examples that arise during a given course, rather than making a course out of it. Using Collind Coubuild online (or any other online site) can do more than this book - going online makes the process student-centered and more active.
I do however see this book as a useful reference to be used from time to time. I simply feel that collocations are better illustrated via online searching and discovery. One strength I guess is that the book goes beyond the word level and has students see patterns in language - and for this it gets a 4-5.

(More customer reviews)+5 for stories but -4 word selection I enjoyed the humerous plays - great writing/acting - and agree that these are words you need to know, but I'd assume you already do unless English is a 2nd lang. If you don't know Technology, Perceive, Compound, Drudgery, Implore, Tinge, Badger, Realm, indiscriminate, (some of the 17 target words from the 1st play, act 1), then this would likely be a good tape for you. Many idioms are also covered. Typical level of difficulty are the 3 from the 2nd play, "cold feet", "keep a stiff upper lip", and "look a gift horse in the mouth". One or two words per story are at a more difficult level like prognosticate, nefarious, pique, but why endure all the definitions of elementary words/idioms when WordBuilders is available?Tip to authors: Lose the idioms, introduce only 7 or 8 words per act, and select more advanced words. Your stories were the best!

Diederich (Author), Sydell Terris Carlton (Author) which is recommanded by a high school student who matriculated into Harvard University for medical study.
However, this book only resemble the title of the book he recommanded. I believe the title is very misleading. It should be titled "Vocabulary for Elementary Students."
It's regretful that I missed the deadline to get refund.
With sincerity, I would like to say to the author, editor and publisher of this book, please don't sell put on MISLEADING title on the book.

That book covers the many many meanings a verb can have and how it can change meaning with various prepositions and also gives numerous example sentences per verb/meaning.

501 Arabic Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All Forms Review

(More customer reviews)Used together with Hans Wehr's indispensable dictionary, this book is very useful for the intermediate learner of Arabic. However, the lack of English indexing is extremely frustrating. In short, it's definitely worth having until the next edition comes out - hopefully with a much-improved index.
PROS:
1. Each of the 501 verbs is conjugated neatly in its 65 different forms according to:
- person (1st, 2nd, and 3rd)
- number (singular, dual, plural)
- gender (feminine and masculine)
- voice (active and passive)
- mood (perfect (maadhi), imperfect (marfoo'a), subjunctive (mansoob), jussive (majroor), imperative (amr))
- active participle (sighat al-fa'il), passive participle (sighat al-maf'ool), and verbal noun (masdar)
These are all the forms that Arabic professors expect you (as an intermediate or advanced student) to know off the top of your head, but that few of us can actually recite perfectly - especially for weak verbs, hollow verbs, etc. So it's great having it all in once place as a reference. Even for the beginner, seeing all of this laid out for each verb in one place will give you a good visual schema for how Arabic verbs work.
2. Each verb comes with three or four example sentences using different forms of the verb in context. Very helpful if you're trying to learn new verbs.
3. Each verb comes with its verb pattern (wazn, I to X) and root (jadhr). The book is alphabetized by jadhr, just like Hans Wehr. The verbs are also indexed at the back of the book alphabetically in Arabic as well (i.e. by spelling of the pattern of the verb listed, not just by root).
4. Unlike some other reviewers, I don't find the type to be too small. It's fine. A lot of Arabic texts are written in smaller print than this anyway.
CONS:
1. Although each verb comes with the English meaning, there is no way to look up a verb by its English meaning without flipping through the entire book. This quickly becomes really annoying. It would have taken the publisher a couple of hours and added only a few pages to the end of the book to include an index of the 501 verbs by English definition. This is by far the biggest problem with the book. Without this problem, this would be a five-star book. The way it is, it's about 3 1/2 stars.
2. Although the verbs are indexed at the back of the book and numbered 1-501, page numbers aren't listed to lead you to the verb. Even worse, although the index tells you what verb #70 (out of 501) is, there's no #70 written next to the verb in the body of the book! So the index numbering is completely useless. A big oversight.
3. To make this book even better, it would help to have (a) the plural of the verbal noun (masdar) listed (since these are often irregular) and (b) the prepositions that are used with each verb. I find that I have to look to the example sentences to sort out which preposition comes after each verb, and sometimes that doesn't even clear up the question.
4. There are a few typos to watch out for - I've noticed a couple of sukkuns that should actually be hamzas. But this is a very minor gripe - it's almost 100% correct as far as I can tell.

(More customer reviews)I've owned this book for about ten years and moved it with me whenever I get a new technical writing assignment. It has saved my writing hide with the subject matter experts numerous times! It shows the most common errors made in English usage in an easy-to-understand manner. I had trouble with misplaced modifiers and "like" as opposed to "such as" for years. This book helped me learn which way is correct usage!
I like the straighforward and often humorous style. I'd love to see future editions.
