Reviewed by Ed Vasicek, Author of The Midrash Key: Pinpointing the Old Testament Texts from Which Jesus Preached
Bullinger's massive classifications of figures of speech used in the Bible provides a wealth of help in interpretation. When I am studying a difficult verse, I often use the Scripture index in Bullinger's work to find out if figurative language might come into play. Not only does Bullinger address figures that we commonly think of (exaggeration/hyperbole, etc.), but he divides them into subcategories -- and includes classifications of figures one would not ordinarily detect through a casual reading of Biblical texts.
This is not meant for reading or even studying through (though it is fascinating to thumb through it), but is more or less a very useful reference work. I would label it as an essential book for pastors and Bible teachers.
As an evangelical pastor of 24 years, I give this book two thumbs up.

Bible translators have, through inattention to figures of speech, made serious translation blunders, clouding the real meaning of many important passages of God's Word. E. W. Bullinger's volume, first published in 1898, clarifies 217 distinct figures of speech used in the Bible. Walter C. Kaiser, dean of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, calls it "the best handbook on figures of speech. It should be on every exegete's shelf." In systematic order, this classic gives the proper pronunciation of each figure of speech, its etymology or origin, and a number of Scripture passages where the figure of speech is used, giving full explanation of its use in each context. Figures of Speech Used in the Bible cites nearly eight thousand Bible passages and includes five appendices and seven indexes, making it even more valuable as a reference tool.

Modern Analytical Chemistry Review

Modern Analytical Chemistry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very fine book for analytical courses. It's different than the others in that it emphasizes sampling, optimizing methods, analyzing & validating data, handling interferents, stats, experimental design, calibration and QA. In doing so it does not neglect the traditional topics like gravimetry, titrimetry, solvent extraction, equilibrium chemistry and so on.
It covers alot of material and would be sufficient to completely replace a separate instrumental analysis book for upper-level courses if supplemented properly.
It covers everything a beginning analyst should know with clear definitions, explanations and thoughtful examples. It has many end-of-chapter problems, suggested readings and references. Perhaps too many of these were included for a basic text. But on the other hand it does make it useful as a reference and for professors when designing courses.
The main problem with it is that many chapters are too long (e.g. the chapter on Evaluating Analytical Data) and these should have been broken into more manageable bits.
I also don't like how modern analytical textbooks include basic quantitative analysis and instrumental methods all-in-one. For 2 reasons: (1) the books become needlessly heavy and then binding becomes loose, pages fall out and (2) much material is never read since often a separate instrumental analysis book is used for upper-year courses. Quant books shouldn't try to be all things to all people - just focus on the basics, please. (An ideal, basic text is Exploring Chemical Analysis by Daniel C. Harris, ISBN 1429201479)
Too bad this book is OOP but you can get a revised and extended second edition in PDF at the author's website at Depauw U.

Machine Learning Review

Machine Learning

I agree with some of the previous reviews which criticize the book for its lack of depth, but I believe this to be an asset rather than a liability given its target audience (seniors and beginning grad. students). The average college senior typically knows very little about subjects like neural networks, genetic algorithms, or Baysian networks, and this book goes a long way in demystifying these subjects in a very clear, concise, and understandable way. Moreover, the first-year grad. student who is interested in possibly doing research in this field needs more of an overview than to dive deeply into
one of the many branches which themselves have had entire books written about them. This is one of the few if only books where one will find diverse areas of learning (e.g. analytical, reinforcment, Bayesian, neural-network, genetic-algorithmic) all within the same cover.
But more than just an encyclopedic introduction, the author makes a number of connections between the different paradigms. For example, he explains that associated with each paradigm is the notion of an inductive-learning bias, i.e. the underlying assumptions that lend validity to a given learning approach. These end-of-chapter discussions on bias seem very interesting and unique to this book.
Finally, I used this book for part of the reading material for an intro. AI class, and received much positive feedback from the students, although some did find the presentation a bit too abstract for their undergraduate tastes

This is an excellent book. I have been trying to find some ways to motivate teaching Hindi to my kids aged 11 and 7. These books were an excellent match for their interests. They can related to the character of Aamoo. My children go around the house reciting phrases about Aamoo from this book. To any parent who wants to teach Hindi to their children in an interesting and fun way, this book provides an excellent tool to do the same.
I have used this book along with the Activity Book Hindi Activity Workbook and the basic Alphabet book Hindi Alphabet Book: Ka Kha Ga from the same publisher. The combination has worked well for me.
After my children graduate from Aamoo, I intend to try out the level 2 book Tara Sitara: Tara the Star (Hindi Edition)Tara Ke Kisse: Tara's Stories and the level 3 reader Hindi Children's Book Sonu's Stories: Level 3 Easy Reader. They seem to be the continuation of these theme of books.

This book is a level 1 Hindi reader. Level 1 books help in developing Hindi vocabulary andpronunciation skills for children who have some familiarity with Hindi script. This book contains nine stories. Each story consists of simple repetitivesentences with a simple but interesting story line. On each page of the book, the topmost line provides the sentence in Hindi. Immediately below it is the transliteration of the sentence in English. If the transliterated line is read in conversational English, the pronunciation would be similar to the one in Hindi. The line at the bottom of the page translates the sentence in English. The book consists of nine stories, each teaching new basics words of Hindi through repetetive sentences in an interesting anecdotal manner.

Algebra Review

Algebra
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As others have said, this is not a book to begin learning algebra, but is a necessary book for most students to have on their shelves. Why is that? Basic topics are discussed from scratch in this book from the most advanced possible viewpoint. Hence few can learn them here for the first time, but no one can graduate to professional status without eventually arriving at this perspective.
In particular the categorical point of view is simply essential to a research mathematician to acquire at some point, and Lang uses it here from the beginning, while Dummitt and Foote place it in appendix II, after page 800. So Lang's goal seems not to introduce basic algebra, but to provide essential algebraic facts not found elsewhere, and to give them all from a professional's perspective.
This is probably a third book on algebra in today's world, and that is assuming the student is pretty good. The only current book I know of out there that is really aimed at students and also written by a top professional is Artin. If you can, begin with Artin, then read Dummitt and Foote for topics Artin omits, then read Lang to see how you should view the same material and find things Dummitt and Foote left out.
Then you are ready to do research with these tools. For instance one of our research professors tells his students the prerecquisite for working in algebraic number theory is to become comfortable with algebra at the level of Lang. But our course in PhD prelim preparation for algebra will probably use Dummitt and Foote, just because it is a more feasible book for the students to read at that stage. Attempts to use Lang in trhe past have been disastrous.
Nonetheless, even students who found Lang a frustrating text, still use it as a necessary reference, and even find it has too little.
Just compare the treatment of groups in Lang and Dummitt and Foote. Lang covers the whole subject in more depth in 60 pages (2nd edition) while D/F use up over 220 pages on groups, and still do not introduce the categorical point of view, and in particular do not prove the existence of "direct sums" i.e. coproducts (which they do not even define), of groups.
So if you only have Lang, you will almost surely not see enough detail to understand the material, and if you only have D/F you will not see it from quite the right perspective, and will still not know some basic results.
Lang's book has numerous frustrating traits, misprints, errors, many uses of the word "obvious" for arguments that need a great deal of filling in, careless slipups ad nauseam, dyslexic things like saying clearly when to use product as opposed to coproduct, then getting it precisely backwards himself. or a whole discussion of Galois groups as permutations of roots of polynomials while forgetting to assume the polynomial is separable.
Your margins in Lang will be full of corrections, comments and added details, but now and then he will make something so clear in a word or two, that it will forever seem easy to you. In sum it is a locally flawed and carelessly written book, but globally impressive, and one for which there is no adequate substitute to my knowledge. Not least, Addison Wesley has always done a good job of making the type look beautiful on the page. The integrity of some recent bindings of course is another story.

This book is intended as a basic text for a one year course in algebra at the graduate level or as a useful reference for mathematicians and professionals who use higher-level algebra. This book successfully addresses all of the basic concepts of algebra. For the new edition, the author has added exercises and made numerous corrections to the text. From MathSciNet's review of the first edition: "The author has an impressive knack for presenting the important and interesting ideas of algebra in just the "right" way, and he never gets bogged down in the dry formalism which pervades some parts of algebra."

TABE Test of Adult Basic Education : The First Step to Lifelong Success Review

TABE Test of Adult Basic Education : The First Step to Lifelong Success
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have taught GED for several years and we constantly use the TABE tests. I like the test because it is easy to administer and easy to grade.
Recently, many professionals need to update their files and continue to show "language proficiency" in reading and comprehension for writing reports. This book will help you to prepare for such a test.
Also, if you work in a more "hand's on" job, then you may need to refresh your skills in reading. Even as people get older, they need to continue to work on vocabulary, writing and reading skills. The TABE test is a great instrument for educators and students.
I recommend this book for someone who does not have time to take a remedial English class. This book is a great tool for study. I do agree it is "the First Step to Lifelong Success" as a student and for any professional.
I believe that adults need a refresher course from time to time no matter what profession they are in. GED students will most likely be familiar to the TABE tests because it is used to help the teacher locate the grade level of the student through the test scores. They help the student by the practice of taking tests. This is a book designed to help the student improve their skills by taking the TABE test.
It is also a great tool for students who are bilingual.

The Wedding Ceremony Planner: The Essential Guide to the Most Important Part of Your Wedding Day
Average Reviews:

I used this book to customize every aspect of my recent wedding (one month ago today), from the opening prayer & gathering words to the final blessing & pronouncement. There are several passages of each "section" of the ceremony for you to choose from, as well as suggestions on personalizing each section. The sample ceremonies will give you a great place to start if you know you want to personalize your ceremony but aren't sure where to start.
The book isn't just geared towards those looking for religious ceremonies: there's a perfect balance of ceremony passages for those looking for religious words as well as passages for non-traditional unions (ex: same-sex ceremonies, second marriages, marriages with children from previous relationships, etc). The helpful hints, practical advice, and checklists throughout the book made this an indispensable resource.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Our wedding ceremony was so beautiful and personal that every guest told me afterwards how much they'd enjoyed it & that our wedding was the best they'd attended; even our ecumenical minister was impressed and teared up while performing the ceremony. In summary, this is a wonderful book.

The Collected Poems of W.B. Yeats Review

The Collected Poems of W.B. Yeats
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There isn't much question whether Yeats was a great poet, just where on the all time great list he falls. Whether you call him the greatest poet of the 20th century, or the greatest since Wordsworth, Milton or Shakespeare, his accomplishments are clear.
Beyond that, why should anyone buy this edition as opposed to any of the other available? First, the collected poems gives you a sense of his development and interests, not just the highlights of his greates poems. Second, and more importantly, this edition is well-annotated. The notes are thorough without being unduly interpretive--they tell you what an allusion refers to, not how it affects the meaning of the poem. The notes aim to be useful to any reader, regardless of background. As a result, western readers will come across odd sounding notes such as "Jesus Christ is the founder of Christianity" or "Hamlet is the hero of William Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name." Still, you'll be thankful for such prosaic entries as they explain Irish myth and locate historical allusions. All in all, it's an edition that belongs on any poetry lover's shelf.

What Your Third Grader Needs to Know (Revised Edition): Fundamentals of a Good Third-Grade Education (Core Knowledge Series) Review

What Your Third Grader Needs to Know (Revised Edition): Fundamentals of a Good Third-Grade Education (Core Knowledge Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Parental spelling errors aside, this series is a very good foundation for a thorough education.
Each book in the series covers the basic subjects (language arts, math, science, geography, world civilization, American civilization and fine arts.) It is not intended to be a child's only source of materials, but rather a guideline for what should be covered each year.
I would not imagine that a child would sit down with the book and read through it; that is not actually the intention of the editor. Rather, it covers the basic subjects and give further resources where the parent or teacher can find more information on the subjects.
As any reviewer of this book should have read, in the Introduction, the editor writes, "The books in this series are designed to be useful tools for parents and teachers, both at home and in school. They are called 'resources' to signal that they do not replace the regular local school curriculum, but rather serve as aids to help children gain some of the important knowledge they will need to make progress in school and be effective in society."
For my children, we use checksheets that cover the material in the books, but use corresponding reference matter that we already have. For the younger kids (grades K - 2), I would not recommend sitting them down with the book at all... but rather, sitting down with them - reading it with the child - making it interesting. Looking for more data via the internet, or World Book, or atlases.
The idea behind the series is that if each school district, private school and homeschool uses a different format each year, children who move around will be at a severe disadvantage. A child going from a homeschool environment to a public school, for instance, may spend two years studying the same material, and may miss some other vital component to his education completely. The Core Knowledge series, used as it is in private and public schools alike, eliminates this problem.
Someone with a 3rd grader in a private school that uses the Core Knowledge guidelines will know their child is "on track" with the public school's 3rd graders, if they use the same system. Then, if that privately educated 3rd grader transfers to the public school in 4th grade, he is not at a great disadvantage.
Since we create our own curriculum, this is a very nice reference to have. I make sure everything in these books are covered in my children's homeschooling. That doesn't mean it's all we do! But we do cover this material.
The 3rd grade book covers extensively the Roman Empire, including Roman mythology, the Roman invasions of North Africa, and the rise of Islam. American history stretches from the first Americans through European settlements in America and culminates in the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The math section is strictly to be used as a guideline for what the typical 3rd grader should be learning in math. Explanations for various math concepts are given, but exercises must come from another source.
Science briefly covers the food chain, environmental pollution, animals that live in colonies, the human nervous system, electricity, chemistry, astronomy and famous scientists. Again, this information is not intended to be the sole source of educational materials for your child, but rather an overview of the subjects that should be covered in 3rd grade.
Language Arts contains excerpts from a few classics "Arabian Nights" and "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland", among others, some poetry, grammar, sayings and phrases and Norse mythology.
I highly recommend these books to homeschoolers, teachers and all parents who want to ensure their child is receiving a comprehensive education... I have been using them for years now, and my children are doing very well...

I use this book in teaching French to some Junior-High age children. This is an excellent book for covering grammar basics and providing a foundation to the language. The book contains a decent French/English and English/French dictionary at the back of the book, as well as lessons on French culture and history (which are written in English). Exercise directions and grammar lessons are clear and written in English. The book is intended to be a first year text book and therefore, there are no pronounciation guide lines. The book would best be used with a teacher, and is probably not appropriate for someone who is trying to learn without an instructor.

The book started off interestingly enough, but as it went on, I became more and more put off by Emoto's lack of scientific perspective, even as he was claiming to be performing "research."
To be clear, I am very open minded and actively seek out cutting-edge ideas that push the envelope of our concepts of 'reality.' However, if a photo is shown of an ice crystal that purportedly got its shape from a prayer or a phrase or a song, a rational thinking person wants to know, "Out of a billion crystals that may have formed at that instant, how representative (or *subjectively selective*) is that photo that is being shown of the entire population of the crystals in the mix?" Careful statistical evaluations would be necessary to establish any solid basis for Emoto's theses. Yet no hard data such as this exists in this book. I am open to these ideas, even want to believe in them, but, where's the beef?
After viewing the photos and Emoto's captions describing them, it would be hard for an objective person --regardless of their level of open-mindedness and optimism-- to not see that his interpretations are extemely subjective and dubious. Although I was trying to hang with him, he really lost me at the point where he showed a photo of a crystal from water that had been shown a picture of a crop circle and told us the crystal looked like a UFO. (To be fair, I was fascinated by the four crystal photos of Vivaldi's Four Seasons - they seemed to fit the seasons very well.)
There's 'good' new age, and there's 'bad' new age; it was very disappointing that this book drifted into the latter. I am still open to the idea that H2O may have interesting messages; Emoto just fundamentally fails to deliver. It received two stars because it is a nicely published book, and it did stimulate me to fantisize that, applying REAL scientific research, these ideas may lead to something interesting ... someday.

This book has the potential to profoundly transform your world view. Using high-speed photography, Dr. Masaru Emoto discovered that crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed toward them. He found that water from clear springs and water that has been exposed to loving words shows brilliant, complex, and colorful snowflake patterns. In contrast, polluted water, or water exposed to negative thoughts, forms incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colors. The implications of this research create a new awareness of how we can positively impact the earth and our personal health.

I just finished a semester at the University of Texas at Austin in which this book was the text book for an abstract data types class. The book is a good textbook, but not a good desk reference.
The book is obviously written with students in mind, using rhetorical questions, leaving vital areas unexplained as "exercises for the reader", etc. As an introductory text, in an introductory class, the book served its purpose, though the professor was required to explain some of the details that the book lacked. The code that is included in the book is all written in pseudo-code, most of it does not compile without some tweaking, and when a student is trying to grasp a diffucult concept in graph theory, the last thing that student wants is to have to trace through the program, line-by-line, to catch some error that is irrelevant to the larger problem, such as semicolons that have been left out, unmatched parenthesis, variable names that are not allowed by most of the commercial compilers.
The book does have a good learning curve, however, and makes for good reading when first approaching a new computer science concept; however, when having to program a particularly hard section of a certain data structure, wading through pages of diatribe against older methods is not what is needed at that time.
For instance, after spending a large portion of an entire chapter on AVL trees, Weiss proceeds to give example code (that doesn't compile on Borland 5.0, Visual C++, or GNU compilers without some tweaking), but leaves out a crucial method! When first learning about AVL trees, one of the lessons that was drilled into our heads was the diffuculty of AVL deletion... yet the book summed it up in *one* sentence: "As with most data structures, deletion is the hardest task; it is left as an exercise to the reader."
Argh.

Experienced author and teacher Mark Allen Weiss now brings his expertise to the CS2 course with Algorithms, Data Structures, and Problem Solving with C++, which introduces both data structures and algorithm design from the viewpoint of abstract thinking and problem solving. The author chooses C++ as the language of implementation, but the emphasis of the book itself remains on uniformly accepted CS2 topics such as pointers, data structures, algorithm analysis, and increasingly complex programming projects.Algorithms, Data Structures, and Problem Solving with C++ is the first CS2 textbook that clearly separates the interface and implementation of data structures. The interface and running time of data structures are presented first, and students have the opportunity to use the data structures in a host of practical examples before being introduced to the implementations. This unique approach enhances the ability of students to think abstractly.Features * Retains an emphasis on data structures and algorithm design while using C++ as the language of implementation. * Reinforces abstraction by discussing interface and implementations of data structures in different parts of the book.* Incorporates case studies such as expression evaluation, cross-reference generation, and shortest path calculations. * Provides a complete discussion of time complexity and Big-Oh notation early in the text. * Gives the instructor flexibility in choosing an appropriate balance between practice, theory, and level of C++ detail. Contains optional advanced material in Part V. * Covers classes, templates, and inheritance as fundamental concepts in sophisticated C++ programs. * Contains fully functional code that has been tested on g++2.6.2, Sun 3.0.1, and Borland 4.5 compilers. Code is integrated into the book and also available by ftp. * Includes end-of-chapter glossaries, summaries of common errors, and a variety of exercises. 0805316663B04062001
