SPELLING WORKOUT LEVEL B PUPIL EDITION Review

SPELLING WORKOUT LEVEL B PUPIL EDITION
Average Reviews:

I purchased this for my 7 year old who is in second grade (homeschool). He really loves the workbook and wants to do all the activities for the week in one sitting. The words are not too hard. I can easily see him finishing and moving on to the third grade level before finishing second grade.
Each week has a spelling tip/rule which the words fall under. For those who would like to know. . . the words in the first lesson are fox, cut hill, wind, put, all moon, saw, tell, new (which seem very easy for 2nd grade). Week thirty-five's words are hole, whole, no, know, not, knot, ate eight, to, too, two, right, write, one, won. I think our local public schools did these type of words in 1st grade. My son did not have "formal" spelling last year so I don't mind starting him off with easier words. I've found it is better to start easy and build confidence than to ruin a child's self-esteem with something too hard. I do believe; however, that if your child has already had formal spelling it would be easy to move on to level C and skip level B.
I have tried many spelling programs over the years (with my oldest son) and my children rate this one as the best. It has interesting activities such as crossword puzzles, find the missing letters, proofreading, etc. My favorite part is that each week the child has a short story to read that uses all of the week's spelling words. The stories are usually educational too! If your child enjoys short activities to reinforce what he/she is learning, I believe you will find this program a perfect fit.

Software Architecture: Foundations, Theory, and Practice Review

Software Architecture: Foundations, Theory, and Practice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Software Architecture: Foundations, Theory, and Practice is a landmark text that will become an essental introduction to the discipline of software systems architecture. If you are a student, tester, manager, methodologist, developer, or simply an architect, and want a holistic understanding of what real software architects think software architecture is and why it matters, this is the place to start.
I bought this after Roy Fielding (of REST and HTTP fame) mentioned it on the rest-discuss mailing list. Roy is one of the industry's top architects, and I wasn't disappointed. The book is timely - architecture is coming to be accepted as an important activity, especially for distributed, and large scale systems. What many people don't realize is that drawing pictures, writing documents no-one reads, meta-modeling, and pontificating on "concerns" are not software architecture. Software architecture is about introducing constraints via principled, objective design to achieve particular system properties. Architecture is difficult and exhausting work, but done well can offer immense value to users and stakeholders. This book, along with Rozanski and Woods' "Software Systems Architecture: Working With Stakeholders Using Viewpoints and Perspectives" makes that explicit.
The book is unapologetic about software architecture's standing in the industry. SAFTAP positions architecture as the primary design activity for software - not development, not requirements analysis, not testing, not methodology, but architecture. That will make for interesting debate.
My single criticism of this book is that it does not do enough to treat user experience (Ux) and informatics as architecturally significant, but not enough to take away a star. I'm hoping a future edition will rectify that.
Some noteworthy chapters in the book (there are 17 chapters in all):
* The Big Idea: explains what architecture is and why it matters. The building metaphor (often heavily criticised in the industry, see the excellent "Software is not Bricks" by Raganwald) is dealt with calmly and then put to one side.
* Architecture in Context: explains how architecture fits into the overall lifecycle and process of software systems.
* Connectors: this is one of my favourite chapters. The concept of a connector is vital to a software system, but is rarely if ever discussed in programming or engineering texts.
* Modeling: probably not what you think. This chapter emphasizes communication, clarity and disambiguation over notations and diagrams.
* Implementation: programmers hate the quip "implementation detail", but in truth many things in a system are just that and it does not mean they are unimportant. This chapter covers those details and why they matter.
* Deployment and Mobility: good architects understand that a systems have a life well beyond initial delivery, which is where most developers, managers and stakeholders tend to focus attention. This was one of favorite sections as the running system simply doesn't get enough attention in most projects today.
* Applied architecture and Styles: covers some examples of architectural styles, notably REST and SOA, which are certainly the best known architectures in my part of the industry.
* Designing for non-functional properties: many non-functional concerns don't start to matter until the system is deployed and there isn't always agreement among technical specialists over what's truly important. If you are technical specialist this should help you articulate the cost/benefit of looking at the "unfeatures" of a system.
* Security and Trust: software is increasingly distributed, and increasingly a super-system of components interacting over the Internet and Mobile Networks. So it's good to see a text that makes security a first order concern and not just a non-functional ones.
* Domain Specific Software Engineering: I'm trained as an industrial designer where the notion of common modular components with standard interfaces acting as a platform for product development is a known Good Thing in domains such as the automotive and consumer electronics industries. This chapter gives a good overview of modular design focusing on the software product lines approach. The example given is from Philips, but it could as easily have been from Toyota.
* People, Roles and Teams: software architecture, like other architecture disciplines, has a strong social dimension. This chapter explains how the architect role fits into an organisation and where they can add value and exert influence.

Software architecture is foundational to the development of large, practical software-intensive applications. This brand-new text covers all facets of software architecture and how it serves as the intellectual centerpiece of software development and evolution. Critically, this text focuses on supporting creation of real implemented systems. Hence the text details not only modeling techniques, but design, implementation, deployment, and system adaptation -- as well as a host of other topics -- putting the elements in context and comparing and contrasting them with one another. Rather than focusing on one method, notation, tool, or process, this new text/reference widely surveys software architecture techniques, enabling the instructor and practitioner to choose the right tool for the job at hand. Software Architecture is intended for upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses in software architecture, software design, component-based software engineering, and distributed systems; the text may also be used in introductory as well as advanced software engineering courses.

Spanish Verbs 101 (Learn in Your Car) (Spanish Edition) Review

Spanish Verbs 101 (Learn in Your Car) (Spanish Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great CD for those who want to memorize verb tenses. The CD is a little boring, as it is simply one woman who conjugates verbs, and then gives an english translation for each one. Each tense is done in order, then starting with the -ar verbs, then -er verbs then -ir verbs. It is the verbal equivelent of reading the 501 Spanish verbs book outloud! Note: the second person plural form, or the vos form, is not given. This form is mainly used in Spain.
Ex: Hablo - I speak
Hablas - You speak
Habla - He/She/You speak
Hablamos - We speak
Hablan - They speak
They go alphabetically from there. This covers the present, preterite, imperfect, future perfect, and present progressive (I think). There are no phrases, sentences nor context given, only cojugated verbs. This is much better than writing verbs over and over again, and good for learning some new verbs, but take it for what it is. A little maddening to listen to, but a good review if you need some intensive memorization. Better for the more advanced student, who is learning tenses past the present tense. The most annoying part of this CD is that after every conjugation, the english equivalent is given. For example:
"Hablo, I speak, Hablas, you speak" The half english in the forms is really annoying after awhile. The listener does not become immersed in the spanish experience.

The Selected Poems of Federico García Lorca (New Directions Paperbook) (English and Spanish Edition)
Average Reviews:

Translations usually don't do justice to Lorca's poetry, who seemed distant and maudlin in some of the earlier translations that I had read. A friend assured me that Lorca was worth pursuing, and indeed he was. In this collection, which features crisp and sharp translations, including those by Stephen Spender, Lorca's poetry emerges with all the strength and pathos it must have in Spanish. He strikes at the core of human longing, the eternal desire for love and death, with a simple and sometimes abstract imagery. Highly recommended for all readers of poetry.

FPGA Prototyping by VHDL Examples: Xilinx Spartan-3 Version

(More customer reviews)
This is one of the best introductory VHDL books out there. Even though it does not focus on the VHDL Language itself it does demonstrate the use of VHDL and the hardware design methodology via practical design examples. All explanantions are clear and easy to follow. The design examples provided in the book are very practical (UART, PS2, VGA controller). The examples themselves are designed using the hardware design methodologies presented (FSM-based and FSMD-based). Finally the Picoblaze section in the textbook is the best treatize of the picoblaze micro that I've seen this far.
For those interested in a more rigourous treatment of the VHDL language, design methodology and synthesis issues (but not practical examples) I also highly recoommend "RTL Hardware Design Using VHDL: Coding for Efficiency, Portability, and Scalability" by the same author.

The Art of SEO: Mastering Search Engine Optimization (Theory in Practice)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am one who has been very outspoken about the more shady SEO practitioners and about the ridiculously overprices "courses" that are heavily promoted on the Internet. SEO has acquired some of the taint of huckster marketing because of that.
I hope this book helps eliminate some of that. There's no need to pay some self-styled "Internet Guru" hundreds or thousands of dollars for SEO secrets. There are no secrets: every concept, every "trick", every piece of advice is available on the Internet for free. Of course you have to find it all, you have to learn what things are outdated, what advice doesn't work - or you could find 99% here in this book.
Of course it's not for everyone. It assumes some technical knowledge or at least access to someone with that knowledge. As an example, at several points 301 redirects are used as the solution certain SEO issues. Although some minor direction is given about implementing these, you'd need more than is provided here if you were a neophyte - someone using Blogger or [...] isn't going to become proficient with Apache from reading this.
The only small complaint I can make is that sometimes the authors use too many examples, especially for the more basic concepts at the beginning of the book. However, too many is far better than too few, so I won't complain too much. I definitely can't complain that they left anything out: this could serve as a course book for a SEO class.
I'll be recommending this strongly.

I devoured this book!! As a parent and a teacher, I know that this book is valuable for both groups. If children have the benefit of knowing how to think while they read, there can be no stopping them. All of us who love to read may not even realize what we are doing during this process but something wonderful happens when we are engaged with a book: To name and model the "7 Keys" for children is so important for their futures as good readers.
If kids don't "see" what they are reading; (visualize) how can they possibly find meaning? Don't assume that these keys happen naturally all of the time. It is so crucial that we as parents and educators guide our kids through this wonderful discovery process in order to help them "get it" and love it!!
I strongly recommend this book for anyone who cares about literacy and for those helping to develop a generation of life-long readers. If you care about children loving reading: BUY THIS BOOK. If you care about children doing well in school: BUY THIS BOOK. If you care about children doing well in life: BUY THIS BOOK. If you care about children passing standardized tests: BUY THIS BOOK. If you care about children at all, BUY THIS BOOK.

I dont have anything bad to say regarding this book. familiarity with Object oriented and programming paradims is certainly useful. This is not a learn in 21 days book. Set aside coupla months and enjoy the ride. The cool thing abt this book is the ability to tryout the abap programs.
I DID HAVE PROBLEMS!!!
1)installing the CDs. I am using Windows XP and had coupla glitches.
1) you should add the ip address and computer name to the /etc/hosts file on your computer. It can be found in the system32 folder.
2) You probably need to copy the contents of the Data CD(2) to hard disk (incase you dont have 2 CD drives. And specify the location of the data files during instalation.
2) Problem creating Objects: I did have problems creating Objects..It was frustrating for a while. Then I figured out the solution after some online research.
a) Try to apply the patch then comes with the CD.
b) renaming my files to start with z_ solved the problem

If you've ever found the world around you changing and weren't quite sure where you fit into the scheme of things, this play is one you'll want to read. Soyinka develops several themes throughout the work- some of the most relevant themes include the struggle for power between men and women and tradition versus modernization. The play takes place in a small African village that has been relatively untouched by Western civilization. The plot centers around a beautiful young girl named Sidi and her experiences. The greatest conflict is presented in the two men who have fallen in love with her- Lakunle, the modern schoolteacher who wants to marry for love and honor, and Baroka, the village bale (chief), who wants Sidi for himself because she is beautiful and he traditionally has a right to any woman he wants. Sidi, who is stubborn and haughty, is caught not only between these two men, but between the ideals they represent. Lakunle's ideas seem to make sense to her but the tradition by which the people of the town govern their daily lives has been all she has ever known. Soyinka uses humor and biting sarcasm to set his scene and sharply characterize Sidi, Lakunle, Baroka, and the Bale's oldest wife, Sadiku. Who and what will Sidi choose? And what does that decision say about our human nature? Soyinka lets you make your own judgement. Sidi:"Come to my wedding if you will. If not...[She shrugs her shoulders. Kneels down at Sadiku's feet.] Mother of brides, your blessing..."

Reciprocal Teaching at Work: Strategies for Improving Reading Comprehension

This book is an excellent tool for teaching the four important reading stategies of predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing. The third graders that I have used it with love the characters. They are using the strategies more because of the characters that were used to introduce them. The fifth graders in our school have taken over the teaching of the strategies using reciprocal teaching. It is an excellent tool to teach reading either whole class or small group.

Reciprocal teaching is a technique based on teacher modeling, student participation, and four strategies that good readers use to comprehend text: predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing. Although reciprocal teaching originally was designed for use with struggling readers, author Lori D. Oczkus offers innovative lessons aimed at improving the reading comprehension of all students. Reciprocal Teaching at Work: Strategies for Improving Reading Comprehension provides a practical classroom resource on reciprocal teaching that readers will find accessible and engaging. Chapter 1 describes each reciprocal teaching strategy in detail and suggests ways that teachers can overcome both difficulties that they may encounter when using this teaching technique and common problems that students have with using the strategies. Chapters 2–4 explain how to use reciprocal teaching in whole-class sessions, guided reading groups, and literature circles, respectively. Each of these chapters offers scaffolded lessons, minilessons, and reproducible forms for classroom teachers to use with students, and reflection questions for staff development. The appendixes provide a list of what teachers should observe when students work with the reciprocal teaching strategies, a student self-assessment for strategy usage, and instructions for conducting informal assessment interviews with students. This book will benefit classroom teachers and reading specialists working primarily with students in grades 2–6, and teacher educators, school administrators, and staff developers seeking successful reading comprehension strategies to share with teachers.

RHCE Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide (Exam RH302) (Certification Press) Review

RHCE Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide (Exam RH302) (Certification Press)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Red Hat Certified Engineer is one of the most respected of the Linux certifications. Part of the reason is because of the difficulty of the exam. "Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide, 4th Edition" covers all the points of the exam very well and includes the information you need to work with Red Hat in the real world. In addition to all the information you need to pass the exam, the book contains over 50 lab exercises and two complete RHCE exams and the entire book on CD. If you plan on taking the exam do the labs, don't just read over them.
Michael Jang has consistently produced high quality books and this is one of his best. The book is strongly slanted toward passing the exam, which is okay since that is exactly what it purports to be. Throughout the book there are short comments marked off from the rest of the test which points to tips for real world items (called "on the job") and tips for the exam (called "exam watch"). Each chapter ends with a short summary, a "two-minute drill", self-test questions, and lab questions. The "two-minute drill" is great for exam preparation the day of the exam since it is pretty much the type of thing that you would put on note cards for a quick review anyway.
This is real-life advice and is full or tips and troubleshooting problems. In the installation section it covers disk partitioning, swap space, bios limits, multiple controllers, and RAID. Some good solid advice and information about things like problems with a computer with both a SCSI drive controller and IDE drive controller in the same system. The installation troubleshooting section includes boot loaders, RAID, logical volumes, kickstart automated installation and pretty much everything you might run across. It even includes how to boot up into single user mode, a very important ability for some administrative tasks and gaining root level access (full access to everything) to the system. For some reason, although this is used in real-life for a lot of reasons, it seems to be left out of most books. They will tell you to switch to single user mode to fix a problem or gain root access, but don't tell you how to do it. This book tells you everything you need to know. It includes not only the graphical and utility methods to do things but also includes the information for how it changes the configuration. The information is so detailed that you can hand add the lines and/or configuration files and do it all by hand if you would prefer. This way you understand exactly what each item does and it is much easier to troubleshoot problems.
The authors have included everything you need to know to install, troubleshoot, and administer a real-world server - shell configuration, kernel information, automation, X Windows installation and configuration, GNOME and KDE desktops, Apache server including security and virtual hosts, Squid proxy server configuration, secure FTP server, mail services including SMTP, sendmail, postfix, POP, and IMAP, Samba installation and configuration, printing services, DNS, BIND, DHCP, LDAP client configuration, firewall policies, network address translation, and the Linux rescue environment are examples of the breadth of coverage.
It even includes how to work with the automounter, another item that is left out of most other books. The only error I found was on page 11, Table 1-2, where it has "First IDE drive = /dev/had" when it should be "/dev/hda". For that to be the only problem I found in a book of this size shows the care with which it was edited.
This is simply the best book I have seen if you want to become a general Linux "guru". Not only does it have everything you need to pass the exam, it has everything you need to install and administer a Linux network. There are better books available on specific areas of Linux, for example a single chapter on Apache obviously cannot compete with a 600 page book on Apache server. Then again, this the best book around if you want an understanding of Linux that is general enough to provide a complete overview of how Linux works in the real world and is also detailed enough to provide everything you need to get everything you want up and running. "Red Hat Certified Engineer Linux Study Guide, 4th Edition" gets the highest recommendation I can give.
