American Education Review

This work is a usable primer for political and social issues surrounding the contemporary U.S. educational system as well as providing some background history, but is marred by mediocre composition (and editing) and some leftist bias. It also provides a general introduction to the history of minority groups in U.S. education. Should be taken with a grain of salt, but a reasonable starting-off point.
Spring evinces strong opinions regarding centralized testing, and various other subjects. While certainly non-objective in multiple aspects his analysis of various themes--including testing--is nonetheless worthwhile in reminding us of the potential dangers to freedom that can arise in test-centered educational systems. In terms of flaws, Spring often makes references with less-than clear context and makes statements without evidence (e.g. publishing a 10-item list of faults with the No Child Left Behind Act by an anti-NCLB that is exaggerated and with no evidence given). Non-U.S. students may have difficulty understanding various aspects of U.S. educational history without referencing outside sources.
Spring's website can be found on McGraw-Hill here, so can evaluate/sample his writings and thought further:

A Celebration of Literature and Response: Children, Books, and Teachers in K-8 Classrooms (2nd Edition) Review

A Celebration of Literature and Response: Children, Books, and Teachers in K-8 Classrooms (2nd Edition)

I chose this book for a children's literature class that I lead based mostly on cost. The other recommended texts in this area are very expensive and I wanted my students to be able to purchase quality trade books as well. I need to supplement the reading a great deal because of the cursory nature of the chapters regarding various genres. For the money, it's a fine text but be aware that it leaves out a great deal that that other books - such as Norton's Through the Eyes of a Child from the same publisher - cover in greater depth.

Reinforced by teachers' experiences in actual classrooms, this book provides a wealth of ideas for projects, readings, and response-based activities that will engage all learners in the joy of reading and responding to literature. It blends an appreciation of children's books across all genres with an emphasis on meaningful instructional strategies for literacy programs. Coverage of multicultural/international literature helps illustrate the universality of themes in children's literature—providing a basis for establishing a library of literature that expresses the totality of children's experiences and speaks to children from all cultures and backgrounds. Coverage is based on Louise Rosenblatt's transactional theory of reader response, and organized around five main "celebrations"that the author uses as a framework for uniting the findings of reader-response theory with quality children's literature and exemplary reflective, literature-based practice. Includes expanded coverage on multicultural/international literature—including numerous examples of children's literature written and published in other countries. Includes extensive coverage of reader responses to literature—oral and written responses, as well as those made through the visual arts. For teachers of Children's Literature. Introduces future teaches to the full range of children's responses to literature—encourages the use of a variety of strategies to elicit authentic, heartfelt, meaningful responses from pupils. An appendix on children's literature awards. Highlights exemplary children's literature across all genres—focuses students' attention on established standards and offers guidance for choosing literature that meets such standards. CONTENTS

The Greek & Latin Roots of English Review

The Greek and Latin Roots of English
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent work for anyone studying the English
language for the first time or for an English literature major.
Students of the English language will appreciate the exhaustive
delineation of the roots of words and word families.
In the area of city planning alone, the author provides
comparable Greek and Latin words alongside the standard
English. For instance, urbs and urbis means city.
Porta or portae means city gate. Domus or domi means house.
The work methodically reviews language families, the workings
of Greek and Latin, prefixes, government vocabulary and
vocabulary of the sciences and social sciences.
There are classic utilizations of the Latin in English.
For instance, "in principio" means in the beginning.
"Status quo" means the state in which something exists.
"Ad Infinitum" refers to infinity and "finis" is the end.
This work could be helpful to students studying Latin or
Greek because the author explains the foreign language
relationship to English. The work could be very helpful for
anyone desiring to improve his/her vocabulary. There are
numerous exercises throughout the text. These are designed
to give students ample practice with word utilization and
application in a number of important contexts. This version
has an extensive constituency or strategic audience.
i.e. English majors, foreign language experts, writers,
editors and newspeople and a variety of scientific professional
people. The work could be useful during formal study for the
standardized SAT exam given for college aspirants.

Over 60 percent of all English words have Greek or Latin roots; in the vocabulary of the sciences and technology, the figure rises to over 90 percent. Through the study of the Greek and Latin roots of English, students can expand their knowledge of English vocabulary and also come to understand the ways in which the history of the English language have shaped our perceptions of the world around us.The approach of this new fourth edition of The Greek and Latin Roots of English is thematic: vocabulary is organized into various topics, including politics and government, psychology, medicine and the biological sciences, literature, ancient culture, and religion and philosophy. Cumulative chapter exercises on tear-out pages reinforce both vocabulary already learned and analytical skills developed in previous lessons. This text will help students begin to learn not only vocabulary, but also the pleasures (and pitfalls) of language study.--This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Introduction to Parallel Computing: Design and Analysis of Parallel Algorithms Review

Introduction to Parallel Computing: Design and Analysis of Parallel Algorithms

I bought this book when I was a 2nd grade CS student. I planned to start my research project in supercomputing field. So I decided to study the aspects of parallel computing starting by its concepts and programming. As a programmer I found that I would need the general view before coding. Kumar's book is great in which it gives you generalized overview of hardware and software architectures. He and his contributors don't take care of what system nor language you're using. Instead, they want you to learn Parallel Programming. Scientific and non-numerical algorithms are overviewed and explained mathematically. They prove everything they state by using mathematics. I don't know any better way. Do you? It's worth every penny.

Interviewing: Principles and Practices Review

Interviewing: Principles and Practices
Average Reviews:

This textbook was a req. for an Interviewing course, which provided thorough information on how to properly conduct an interview (as the interviewer). There was less information on how to be a successful interviewee (i.e. for employment), and our class found the textbook to be oversimplified, and failed to really challenge us as students. For instance, it belabored certain topics that are common sensical, i.e. "Do not pressure an interviewer, do not be hostile, smile." Overall an O.K. book.

The most widely-used text for the interviewing course, Interviewing: Principles and Practices offers comprehensive coverage of a wide range of interviews, as well as the most thorough treatment of the basics of interviewing (including the complex interpersonal communication process, types and uses of questions, and the structuring of interviews from opening to closing). Relevant theory is carefully integrated as a foundation for the practical aspects of interviewing--for both the interviewer and the interviewee. The 12th edition continues to reflect the growing sophistication with which interviewing is being approached, the ever-expanding body of research on all types of interview settings, recent interpersonal communication theory, and the effect of equal opportunity laws on interviewing practices.

The Scarlet Letter: A Kaplan SAT Score-Raising Classic Review

The Scarlet Letter: A Kaplan SAT Score-Raising Classic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an SAT tutor and believe that this is one of the most valuable books of its type a student preparing for the test can read. Unfortunately, in my experience, students also find this one of the least enjoyable books. Why is it valuable?
There are 2 major areas that a student must master to improve scores on the SAT Critical Reading section: (1) Vocabulary. (2) Understanding of complex sentence structures. This book provides a student with both. (1) SAT words are bolded, their definitions conveniently located on the facing page. (2) Sentence structure is complex and the book is written in "older" English which is partly a result of the era it was written in. The college board knows this and even suggests that students read books written before 1900. The complex sentences and old language may be reasons students do not put The Scarlet Letter on their Top 10 Favorite Books List, but it does not take away from the book's value-- if you can get your child to read it.
