Not to start a war here, but Janet Burroway's book *is* fresh, and it's the best, most comprehensive multigenre text on the market. And it's affordable both for university students and writers who want to use it on their own. No, it's not full of inspirational gobbledygook and gimmicky suggestions to touch the heart of the writer. Instead, it's a very smart book that asks the writer to join in the long histories of the genres it discusses and offers the most succinctly articulated descriptions of techniques and approaches that will not only get a writer started writing but that will also help that writer understand what makes good writing good. The most innovative aspect of Burroway's book is that it takes creative writing as a whole and discusses those basic elements that make all writing good, from the need for concrete imagery that says something to the need for narrative to move and develop across a work. And it offers dozens and dozens of recent examples to illustrate its points. As an anthology alone, this book would be a good read. But Burroway's comments very aptly help a reader to understand what is working well in each of her excerpts. No, it doesn't offer up elaborate metaphors about bones or light or any inner writing child as a way to nurture the soul of the writer. But from my experience as a writing instructor, it's not the soul of the beginning writer that needs nurturing. This book understands quite well the need to nurture the mind of the writer first.

English Words from Latin and Greek Elements Review

English Words from Latin and Greek Elements

As the reviser of this book--not the Photographer (there is not a single picture in the tome)--I must correct a few misimpressions given in the other reviews, while touting the systematic format that separates Dr. Ayers's book from its competitors. To be sure this is a textbook--the best selling text in this subject area--divided into two halves, one dealing with English words derived from Latin, the other dealing with English words derived from Greek. Each lesson has some introductory material; these intros vary: some explain how English builds words from Latin and Greek bases with an explanation of how dictionaries present such information, some are mini-lectures in linguistic processes that characterize English words, some deal with how the form and meaning of words change with time. Each lesson presents a list of bases, prefixes and suffixes for the student to memorize. These are set forth clearly in caps, and there are many examples given for each item. The lesson ends not with quizzes but with words derived from the elements presented in sentences that are written by skilled writers of English. All of the information is well indexed at the end. This systematic approach gives the student control over the most frequently encountered word elements in English coming from Greek and Latin. As a consequence of her studies, such a student will have stored in her brain the keys to about half of the harder words in English including the many thousands of technical words invented each year--especially those medical and biological tongue twisters invented by the biological and medical communities. With the keys in her head and the word in its context before her, the student will often undertand the author without having to look up words that often are not yet even in the most recent dictionary. This is power; but power is not easily gained in any field of endeavor. The book can be used by a diligent person for self-study, but most students will need a structured environment in which to learn its contents. TD Worthen

Since 1965,Donald Ayers' English Words from Latin and Greek Elements has helped thousands of students to a broader vocabulary by showing them how to recognize classical roots in modern English words. Its second edition, published in 1986, has confirmed that vocabulary is best taught by root, not rote. The importance of learning classical word roots is already acknowledged by vocabulary texts that devote chapters to them. Why a whole book based on this approach?Ayers' text exposes students to a wider range of roots, introduces new English words in context sentences, and reinforces vocabulary through exercises. It promotes more practice with roots so that students learn to use them as tools in their everyday encounters with new words.English Words is written from the standpoint of English; it neither attempts to teach students Latin or Greek nor expects a knowledge of classical languages on the part of instructors. Its success has been demonstrated at both the secondary and college levels, and it can be used effectively with students in remedial or accelerated programs. An Instructor's Manual (gratis with adoption) and a Workbook are also available.

Patterns for College Writing: A Rhetorical Reader and Guide Review

Patterns for College Writing: A Rhetorical Reader and Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book, `Patterns for College Writing: A Rhetorical Reader and Guide' edited by Laurie G. Kirszner and Stephen R. Mandell, is a book widely used in colleges and universities, as well as advanced high school classes across the nation. It is a very useful text, and I use it when tutoring students in preparation for community college level writing and reading work. It is used at our college in the basic skills reading courses, too.
The book looks at how writers develop their work. The first few chapters look at some of the basic mechanics of writing - planning, writing, editing and revising. It also looks briefly at certain skills needed for writing, such as brainstorming and idea generation, as well as journal writing. There are many exercises included here to give students first-hand experience.
The second section looks at the various types of writing students will be called upon to produce - narrative papers, process papers, cause-and-effect, descriptive works, comparison-and-contrast, classification, definition, and persuasive/argumentative papers. Each chapter keeps a solid focus on the type of work presented, so that students can develop the particular skills; the final chapter in this section looks at combining the patterns, to produce more complex and comprehensive research papers and essays.
There is a thematic listing of articles that shows the breadth of topics covered - family relationships, language, education, business and work, sports, race and culture, gender, nature and the environment, media and society, history and politics, and ethics. Among more than one hundred articles are sixteen pieces written by actual students, so that students can see the model produced by people at their same level of development. Writings from famous people such as Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King, Jr., Flannery O'Connor and Mark Twain also give breadth and interest to the selections included here.
The writing assignments include journal writing, essays of the types modeled in the chapters, collaborative activities, and even an internet assignment. There is a companion website for students to use, and instructors can take advantage of materials provided by the publisher, such transparencies and additional samples.
The appendix has a ten-step process for writing a research paper (one of the more common types of college writing expected of students). The steps include everything from choosing a topic to documenting sources. Avoiding common pitfalls such as plagiarism (intentional and inadvertent) is also covered.

Laurie Kirszner and Stephen Mandell, best-selling authors with more than twenty-five years' experience teaching college writing, know what works in the classroom. In Patterns for College Writing, they offer a balance of classic and contemporary essays by writers like Sandra Cisneros, Deborah Tannen, E. B.White, and Henry Louis Gates Jr., providing students with exemplary models for their writing--and instructors with excellent, class-tested selections. With extensive headnotes before each reading, abundant apparatus after, and more examples of student writing than any other reader, Patterns has always been an exceptional resource for students. In the tenth edition, a new chapter on editing and proofreading in Part One, "The Writing Process," gives students more help recognizing and correcting errors common in their writing, while Part Two, "Readings for Writers," offers a greater number of informative and argumentative essays, preparing students better than ever for the demands of college writing.

Object Oriented Programming In C++ Review

Object Oriented Programming In C++
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book covers the important aspects of OO approach as well as the STL for C++. It is definitely not suitable for those who have no programming experience in C, and indeed, I find that one actually even needs to have a little knowledge of C++ to benefit from the book. The first two chapters let the C programmer make a transition to C++, and explain clearly on input and output in C++. The next three chapters then strive to explain the OO features in C++.
Generally, the book goes at lengths to illustrate classes in C++ and their workings, and offers many tips and traps as well as certain programming styles and approaches which would produce robust programs. The worked examples were also quite comprehensive. However I feel that the concepts of OO were not well illustrated, and from my experience, a thorough understanding of OO concepts help very much in being able to manipulate classes and using the methods in C++. The chapter on MFC was not very useful, it really looked as if it was just there to fill in space. It does not teach much about MFC.
All in all, however, I would still consider it a fairly good book to keep as a reference.

Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses Review

Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses

This book and the other Practice-Makes-Perfect workbook by Dorothy Richmond ("Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions") are the best Spanish books I've ever used. I just got back from 2 years in the Peace Corps in Honduras and I studied these books every day. They REALLY helped me learn more Spanish! In addition to the concise, easy-to-understand instruction sections, there's tons of exercises to do (with the correct answers in the back of the book) and as I did the exercises, I picked up all kinds of things that I'd been wondering how to say. I also liked the verb workbook a lot because it went way beyond the present tense, all the way to the subjunctive uses of "haber" and other more advanced things I really wanted to know. (This book is especially great if you already know some Spanish because you need some vocabulary to do the exercises, unless you don't mind looking up lots of words in the dictionary.) I highly recommend this book!

A workbook to help you master Spanish tenses

Some things just take a lot of practice to learn, and verb tenses are one of them! Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses goes beyond the scope of many other books that deal with verbs. Typical verb books often present little more than charts of conjugations with perhaps some mechanical exercises that do little to help you really master when and why a particular verb tense should be used.

Spanish Verb Tenses fills this void by offering clear, concise, and at times, humorous explanations that pinpoint why a certain tense works in a given situation. The hundreds of varied exercises offer the added plus of allowing for lots of practice.

The book is divided into three main parts: Part I deals exclusively with the present tense-including the conjugation of regular verbs, formation of questions, essential differences between ser and estar, use of the personal a, reflexive verbs, and the present progressive mood.Part II covers the other six tenses of the indicative mood: preterite, imperfect, future, conditional, present perfect, and past perfect.Part III presents the imperative and the subjunctive, aswell as the future perfect, conditional perfect, and the passive voice.

Two appendices complete the text-one lists verb conjugations, and the other highlights certain verbs and their corresponding prepositions. There are also two bilingual glossaries that define vocabulary introduced in the exercises.

As a companion to a basic text, as a review workbook, or as a reference source, Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses is an indispensable tool for all those who want to practice and perfect their use of Spanish verbs.

I am a 10th grader taking 1st-year Spanish at a public high school.
Maybe I would like this class more if I had a better teacher. I didn't like this book much though. The activities were good, but I wish it was presented in a less child-like format - all of the big pictures and color, but not much actual text. Also, I wish that we would've gone into more grammar instead of just memorizing words.

Sophocles I: Oedipus The King, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone (The Complete Greek Tragedies) Review

Researching translations is never an easy task, and in this case, where you'll have to search on Amazon for the title and the translator to find what you want, it's particularly difficult.
Here's what I've found by comparing several editions:
1. David Grene translation: Seems to be accurate, yet not unwieldy as such. My pick. Language is used precisely, but not to the point where it's barely in English.
2. Fitts/Fitzgerald translation: Excellent as well, though a little less smooth than the Grene one. Certainly not a bad pick.
3. Fagles translation: Beautiful. Not accurate. If you are looking for the smoothest English version, there's no doubt that this is it. That said, because he is looser with the translation, some ideas might be lost. For instance, in Antigone, in the beginning, Antigone discusses how law compels her to bury her brother despite Creon's edict. In Fagles, the "law" concept is lost in "military honors" when discussing the burial of Eteocles. This whole notion of obeying positive law or natural law is very important, but you wouldn't know it from Fagles. In Grene, for example, it is translated to "lawful rites."
4. Gibbons and Segal: Looks great, but right now the book has only Antigone (and not the rest of the trilogy) and costs almost 3x as much. I'll pass. But, from a cursory review, I'm impressed with their work.
5. MacDonald: This edition received some good write-ups, but I wasn't able to do a direct passage-to-passage comparison.
6. Woodruff: NO, NO, NO. Just NO. It's so colloquial it makes me gag. Very accessible, but the modernization of the language is just so extreme as to make it almost laughable. You don't get any sense of the power of language in the play. You just get the story. If you want this to be an easy read, then get Fagles, not this.
7. Kitto: Looks good, though not particularly compelling over either Grene or Fitzgerald (or Gibbons if I wanted to pay so much more).
8. Roche: Practically unreadable the English is so convoluted. Might be the most literal translation, but what's the point unless you are learning Greek and want such a direct translation.
9. Taylor: Way too wordy. Might be more literal, but again, why?
Hope this all helps. Translations can make or break the accessibility of literature. Pick wisely.

"They Say / I Say": The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing with Readings Review

They Say / I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing with Readings
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even as a writer, writing teacher, and rhetorician, I could not see how many gaps I left in my writing until this book. So much of the writing process was just flung at me in public school that I was fortunate to absorb dribs and drabs. Graff, Birkenstein, and Durst dismantle writing into a system, based on the most recent rhetorical research, and lay the process out in short chapters, plain language, and a scheme of templates that students can use to kick-start their own writing.
The authors' thesis is that writing is an uncomplicated process which can be reduced to a handful of rhetorical components. If students see writing as a social act, joining a larger conversation already in process, they will produce engaging writing which both they and their teachers will enjoy. Since the book is laced with examples of effective and ineffective writing, there is no doubt as to which the authors aim for, making evaluation a simple, somewhat objective process.
This book seeks to be accessible to a mass audience. It's written in vernacular English, using examples from current culture and respected print sources. It is so straightforward that teachers can use it at multiple levels, from advanced middle school up through college composition. It's so explicit that it could even be used without a teacher, with only a writing group or college writing center to fill in the role of hands-on assistance with individual problems.
This "With Readings" edition contains the full text of Graff and Birkenstein's original short primer of the same title. The original is less than 150 pages and can be digested in small segments by teachers and students alike. This edition contains over 250 pages of articles from respected print and online publications to guide students into the larger writerly discourse. Selected authors include George Will, Thomas Friedman, Eric Schlosser, and Barack Obama.
My only regret is that I did not receive this book sooner. My teaching career up to this point would have been both easier and more productive if I had enjoyed this text, which simply states everything I wanted to say. Both teachers and students often make writing a more difficult process than it needs to be, but this book strips the mystification away and makes classroom writing as easy and clear-cut as the conversations students already have.

"They Say / I Say" shows that writing well means mastering some key rhetorical moves, the most important of which involves summarizing what others have said ("they say") to set up one's own argument ("I say").
In addition to explaining the basic moves, this book provides writing templates that show students explicitly how to make these moves in their own writing. Now available in two versions, with and without an anthology of 32 readings.

(More customer reviews)
I am a native speaker. I have a degree in linguistics. I have taught French, English and Spanish. I have been teaching Spanish in high school for the last 4 years. Unfortunately, I've had the "pleasure" of working with this book.
My biggest problem with this book is that the authors assume students will learn the way they did. They rely heavily on deductive learning, which is a critical thinking skill not present in the majority of students. Kids are presented with a lot of information and then, they are supposed to answer questions. How if they didn't even have an idea of what is going on? Many of the exercises don't have a clear purpose, as demonstrated by the following -and I quote from the Teacher's book- "When students are doing the activities, accept any answer that makes sense. The purpose is to have students use the new vocabulary, not to recall facts" This makes my students really anxious because they don't know what's expected from them. Gifted students find the exercises boring and unproductive. It isn't until the end of the chapter that vocabulary and grammar are explained. Why not explain and demonstrate from the beginning?
I also dislike how it devotes too much time on one subject (school- a total of 4 chapters!) but other topics of more relevance (like ordering food at a restaurant) have only one brief chapter cut in half and that is reintroduced later.
The book is organized more by grammatical topics rather than vocabulary. In my experience, the most effective way for students to learn and remember information is learning in a communicative approach.
The only salvageable part is the cultural readings. But paying $85 for a book that has just a few interesting cultural readings/activities is not worth it. I wish I could recommend books but I haven't had the chance to work with any others. I mostly supplement my classes with my own materials or some found on the internet.

The first motivation for writing this book is to teach mycolleagues about RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) concepts and the proprietary RTOSdeveloped for our project by me. I realized that the same material with some extensioncan be useful to most embedded engineers who are beginners in learning about RTOS. Icame across many embedded engineers who are not comfortable to use real-time operatingsystem. A significant fraction of these people have taken operating systems courseduring their undergraduate or graduate studies! The unease obviously even moreaggravated for those embedded engineers who do not take operating systems course duringtheir college level studies. I think this is the main reason that some companies stilluse tricky, messy workarounds to solve their scheduling problems in their simple andmoderately complex projects. The operating systems course the engineers studied duringtheir undergraduation is too broad which only cover theoretical aspects of all kinds ofsystems, and mostly devoid of practical training that students can not gain the abilityto develop one! RTOS market share surveys show a significantfraction of companies use their proprietary operating systems. The proprietary RTOS hasthe advantages of leanness, higher efficiency and much more configurability as it isentirely open. Even though the market share for proprietary RTOS is slowly declining, the fraction of the companies that use proprietary RTOSes will be significant for manymore years. This book can be a great resource for the engineers who are developing andmaintaining a proprietary RTOS for his/her company. This bookaddress the needs of the people who want to learn about RTOS and also those who want todevelop one. This book gives in-depth understanding of RTOS, make the reader comfortablein understanding a code written using RTOS, make the reader comfortable using RTOS todevelop a new piece of code. This book explains all basic RTOS concepts starting fromscratch in detail. So a beginner or a person only with little experience with RTOS cansignificantly benefit from this book. This book discusses most of the RTOS concepts andimplements them in a piece of code and develops one simple RTOS kernel, named as SROS(Simple Real-time Operating System). All the features for SROS kernel are developed oneat a time in an evolutionary manner. So this book can also benefit an experienced personwho wants to know more about RTOS kernel. As this book develop feature by feature in apiece meal fashion, this book can greatly benefit the people who want to develop aproprietary RTOS for their projects. As this book covers the kernel of RTOS and pointout some short term projects a reader can do, this book can also be used by students whowant to know about the kernel of RTOS and want to do some short term projects on RTOS. This book introduces the RTOS concepts one by one and shows theirimplementations in C code, or pseudo C code together with ARM assembly code when Cimplementation is not possible (i.e. in case of Hardware Abstraction Layer functions).Every piece of code shown as example in this book has either C code or pseudo C code soreaders with out the knowledge of ARM architecture and instruction set can alsounderstand the functionality of the code easily. (The ARM code given in this book andCDROM is developed for ARM architecture V5 and tested on ARM9 platform). Allover thebook when we mention ARM processor, it means we are referring to an ARM core thatimplement ARM V5 architecture. The RTOS code developed in the book is named as SROS(Simple Real-time Operating System). The SROS kernel implementation is on similar linesto many commercially available RTOSes. The SROS kernel features are added chapter afterchapter. At any level of development, SROS code available in the accompanied CDROM canbe readily used in an ARM based system and can be ported easily to other processorplatforms. SROS features are implemented incrementally so that user has the choice ofusing it at any level of complexity. SROS with minimal features provide minimum code, execution time overheads and vice versa. The code size and execution complexity of SROSis less in the initial version compared to the later version even after unused functionsare removed by linker. The accompanied CD-ROM provides 2 versions of SROS which wereincrementally developed and finished by the end of 2nd and 3rd chapters. The author assumes that the reader is familiar with Cprogramming, and simple data structure - linked lists. No knowledge about assemblyprogramming of ARM processor is assumed, even though the accompanying CDROM provide theSROS implementation on ARM platform, which is auxiliary. Thereaders of this book after reading it can have the comfort of working/evaluating anyRTOS, can have the comfort of knowing the internals of RTOS, can use highly simple andoptimal SROS without any royalties with the flexibility of customizations, or candevelop a simple proprietary real-time operating system in a few days.

Speed Mathematics: Secret Skills for Quick Calculation Review

A farmer told me, Your methods don't help me milk the cows. He was right, and his comments were about as relevant as the two reviews by people who haven't read my book.
Firstly, Trachtenberg's book was criticised for similar reasons forty years ago. I was a fan of Trachtenberg and thought that the criticism was unfair because the critics had misunderstood the purpose of the book. The book was discarded by the critics as discredited. It was still read, and inspired a love for mathematics in many who went on to make their career in education or professions requiring mathematics.
My critic states he has not read my book and then says my book doesn't teach how to multiply large numbers mentally. It does. It teaches the same method as Trachtenberg. We both got our method from the same source. My book does not teach the two-finger method of multiplication. I have never liked it.
My book begins with a method for multiplying one and two-digit numbers. Using the method, children master their multiplication tables in minutes. Instead of being difficult to remember, and a disaster, very young children use the method to master their multiplication tables and learn their basic number facts in record time. Educational authorities and faculties of education in many universities around the world are recommending my books and my methods.
My critic states I don't explain the simple algebraic formula behind my methods. I do. This is the problem with criticising a book you haven't read. In fact, I give several explanations that can be understood by fourth grade students.
Trachtenberg teaches a separate formula for multiplication by each number up to twelve, each involving several steps. They are difficult to learn and to remember. I teach one simple formula that allows anyone to instantly master his or her tables up to the twenty times table and beyond.
My methods for long division and for finding square roots are also much easier to master than Trachtenberg's.
I do not mind criticism, but I like it to be fair and accurate. I have taught the methods around the world, taught thousands of teachers and student teachers, and hundreds of thousands of students. I have received a lot of feedback from students who tell me they are using the methods successfully in the classroom, and from technicians and engineers who are showing off on the job. Teachers of primary (elementary) school children tell me the children ask if they can do mathematics for the rest of the day. This is unheard of.
I have emails from professors of mathematics, from engineers and engineering students as well as young children, who tell me the book has opened up new horizons for them. No one has written that he or she found the methods difficult or the steps difficult to memorise. As you read the explanations in order you find it makes sense and there is no difficulty.
My critic's biggest mistake was that he did not understand the purpose of the book. It was not meant to teach anyone to milk their cows. Nor was the purpose to enable people to multiply six-digit numbers by five-digit numbers mentally, although it does teach this if you want to do it. The purpose is to teach an easy way to solve mathematical problems and to give an understanding of the basics of mathematics. I have plenty of email from children who found the methods easy, and it is interesting that students who excel at mathematics love the methods as well as the students who have believed they are mathematically hopeless. One benefit of the book is it not only teaches you how to solve problems, but it also teaches you what you say in your head to solve them.
Read the book for yourself and make up your own mind.

Using this book will improve your understanding of math and have you performing like a genius!People who excel at mathematics use better strategies than the rest of us; they are not necessarily more intelligent.Speed Mathematics teaches simple methods that will enable you to make lightning calculations in your head-including multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction, as well as working with fractions, squaring numbers, and extracting square and cube roots. Here's just one example of this revolutionary approach to basic mathematics:96 x 97 =Subtract each number from 100.96 x 97 =4 3Subtract diagonally. Either 96--3 or 97-- 4. The result is the first part of the answer.96 x 97 = 934 3Multiply the numbers in the circles. 4 x 3 = 12. This is the second part of the answer.96 x 97 = 93124 3It's that easy!

Hard for me to write a short review of this book since I've written a book about Ashton-Warner's contributions to teaching young children.
The point is, Ashton-Warner was a careful observer of the young Maori children she taught. She knew that what she had been trained to do in a college teacher-training program wasn't working, so she really looked to see what the children cared about, and invented ways to teach them based upon their deep interests and respecting their culture, different from her own. She, a left-handed artist, was different from the mainstream, and wanted to be appreciated...and she carried this and other knowledge from her personal life into her teaching. Ashton-Warner wasn't a woman of perfection, but she made a contribution that lasts...This book has changed the lives of many, many teachers -- I know because they have told me.

had to get this book as part of the coursework for a class and i have to say that it is the worst textbook i have ever had the displeasure to study. many of the questions don't even have the correct answers as part of the options and often they are not even applicable to the lesson that they are in. The infortion in the lessons is extremely sparse, far to insufficiate to truly grasp the concepts that are being taught. don't buy this book id you can avoid it.

Master Skills Series: Reading Comprehension Grade 3 Review

Master Skills Series: Reading Comprehension Grade 3

I was looking for a good reader's comprehension book to use on my third grader. This book is very short (4 to 5 sentences) paragraphs followed by 3 questions. I was looking for something a little longer. The topics in the book are fairly kid friendly and if you are just looking for something for you child to practice on for test taking purposes, I guess it's okay. The vocabulary is very simple (more like 1st or maybe 2nd grade) so there is nothing that your 3rd grader won't understand. Graphics are good and colorful, although they are mostly just covering blank parts of the page and not adding to the stories they illistrate. Just didn't seem like a 3rd grade leve. I'm going to use it for my 2nd grader.
